East Peoria Commissioner Mike Sutherland (in overalls) confronts a group of people who had been fighting on Nov. 16, 2019 in the parking lot of his business, Sutherland Ace Hardware in East Peoria. Sutherland, who is seen and heard in the video demanding the group leave the premises, is being investigated for possible battery by the Illinois State Police. He believes the video, taken by a by-stander, shows he did not strike another person, as alleged by a woman who filed a complaint against him, and is justifiably defending his property.

Ockerson Riverboat Casino
This video highlights the old riverboat casino Ockerson which is docked at Hamms Harbor in Chillicothe, Illinois.
March 11, 1992 — The Rock Island Boatworks, featuring the Casino Rock Island, begins its gaming cruises. The property is modeled after Jumer’s Peoria Boatworks Complex. The Boatworks was a series of four connected individual floating vessels: the Casino Rock Island Riverboat Casino, the Ockerson, the T.G. Gerow and the Effie Afton tugboat. With the exception of the casino, the others were permanently moored. The casino and the Ockerson were used as a casino, the Effie Afton was a restaurant and the T.G. Gerow housed administrative offices.
Are Casinos Good for Communities?
When local, or even provincial or state governments find themselves in need of greater revenue streams to support education, healthcare or other services, but don’t want to raise taxes, casinos and lotteries are often promoted as ways to produce a sizable influx of cash, boost tourism and provide a new source of entertainment for the locals.
It’s important that we stop and ask the question, Are Casinos Good for Communities?
