Park of 28 Panfilov Guardsmen:
The Park of 28 Panfilov Guardsmen is a major park in Almaty, Kazakhstan. The park is located in east-central Almaty in the area surrounding Zenkov Cathedral. It is dedicated to and named after the Panfilov Heroes, 28 soldiers of an Almaty infantry unit who died fighting Nazi German invaders outside of Moscow in World War II. The group takes its name from Ivan Panfilov, the General commanding the 316th division which, in spite of heavy casualties, believed at that time managed to significantly delay the Germans' advance on the capital, buying time for the defenders of the city. An eternal flame commemorating the fallen of the Russian Civil War and the Great Patriotic War burns in front of the giant black monument of soldiers from all 15 Soviet republics.
Ascension Cathedral:
Designed by Andrei Pavlovich Zenkov in 1904, a cathedral was built entirely of wood with the belfry being erected on September 14, 1906. The inner structure of the cathedral was made in the artistic workshops of Moscow and Kiev. The iconostasis was painted by N. Khludov. The cathedral in considerably survived the 1911 earthquake. After the Russian Revolution the cathedral was used to house the Central State Museum of the Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic. From 1930 to 1940 it was used by important public organizations. The first radio transmitters in Almaty were situated in the cathedral's belfry. Restoration work on the cathedral began in 1973 and lasted until 1976. In May 1995 control of the cathedral was returned to the Russian Orthodox Church, and after additional restoration work it was reopened for religious services in 1997.

There was a suggestion to rename the current existing name for the park due to the July 2015 publications by the State Archive of the Russian Federation that the military newspaper Krasnaya Zvezda had concocted the story's details of the heroic story. However, there are no considerations by the city officials in renaming the park.

142.Park of 28 Panfilov guardsmen
This park received its name on May 5, 1942 in honor of Panfilov division and Almaty people who stopped the fascist tanks near Moscow. The park’s history goes back to 1875. The park changed its name many times since then. It used to be a Starokladbischensky park, Pushkin Gardens, Federation Park, etc.
Back in the 1970s the city had an interesting tradition. There is a diplomatic protocol designed for honored guests. This protocol offers to the guests to plant a blue spruce tree along the central path of the park as a symbol of their stay in Almaty and as a dedication to military glory and patriotism of Kazakh people.
The park has a path honoring the heads of states. The trees along that path were planted by the leaders of Russia, China, Kyrgyzstan, Azerbaijan, etc.
There is a memorial of Fame dedicated to the participants of the Civil War and the Great Patriotic War, the Cathedral Ascension Cathedral, Museum of national musical instruments in the park.

22. Military-Historical Museum
Military-Historical Museum of the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Kazakhstan was opened at the House of Officers of the Central Asian Military District, currently the Army House (Zenkov Street, 24). The exhibition space represents four collections: armored vehicles, ground artillery and mortars, air defense forces and special machinery. The total number of weapons is 122.
The Museum reflects the history of military formations on the territory of Kazakhstan. A special place is given to the materials of the 316-8-th Division named after I.V.Panfilov, which was formed in Almaty in July 1941.
Visitors of the Museum can view the samples of military equipment, weapons, collections of arms and flags, relics left from the battle, awards and posters.

Panfilov's 28-Soldier Park, Part 1

78. Building of District House of officers
District House of officers (Zenkov Street, 22), or to be more precise the Central Army House of the Ministry of Defense, was built in 1978 by architects G. Ratushny, O.N. Balykbaev, T.E. Eraliev.
In this large-scale construction of 14,000 square meters there is a Military History Museum (its exhibits tell about the glorious path of the armed forces of Kazakhstan), and a concert hall, the overlap of which are made in the form of a tent; celebrations hall where military officers are awarded with high honors. It is decorated with portraits of prominent Military commanders. The restaurant is a room for the military orchestra.
The long curved facade of the four-storied building with a strict rhythm of the vertical pylons is crowned with an attic floor. And it creates a wonderful impression of the power and greatness of the building.
The facade resembles a triumphal arch, through which you can get to the Eternal Flame of the Glory Memorial; it is decorated with a copper bas-relief, as if hovering above a marble colonnade. The contrast of white limestone and limestone-rock with black streaks gives the building a particularly solemn view.
The person who climbs the granite steps of the building from Kaldayakov street can have an amazing view of the Park of 28 Panfilov team with its main sightseeings.
