FREE Pasig River Ferry Experience in Manila Philippines!
Manila traffic is one of the worst in the world so the government has amped up efforts to provide alternate modes of transportation to get around the metro. They've formally re-started the Pasig River Ferry service and I was super excited to try it out myself.
It was my first time ever boating on the biggest river in the capital of Manila and I was quite surprised with how it went.
Rides are FREE until January 31, 2020 so make sure you check it out! Maybe it's better than your usual commute routine.

The Pasig River: Reviving a Dead Water in the Philippines
The Pasig River in the Philippines was a clear, flowing body of water that served as the center of commerce in Spanish colonial Manila in the 1800s. Stretching 27 kilometers, it connects Laguna Lake to Manila Bay and was the major source of water and livelihood of the many communities along its banks. People washed clothes in the shallower waters and fisher folks' daily catch were always bountiful. The passenger boats that plied the river from the nearby province of Laguna to Manila and back served as the primary means of transportation. The Pasig river's demise was a slow process that began in the 1930s, when fish migration from Laguna Lake decreased, and people stopped bathing and washing activities. By the 1970s, the river stank and turned black. Water quality dropped.
In 1989, the Philippine government began working with international partners to rehabilitate the river. Improvements have been made in the condition of the Pasig River, but it still has along way to go. The Asian Development Bank is working to improve the river alongside government agencies, academics, non-government organizations, and communities and businesses.
The Asian Development Bank aims for an Asia and Pacific free from poverty. The Pasig River (Filipino: Ilog Pasig, Spanish: Río Pásig), is a river in the Philippines that connects Laguna de Bay to Manila Bay. Stretching for 25 kilometres (15.5 mi), it bisects the Philippine capital of Manila and its surrounding urban area into northern and southern halves. Its major tributaries are the Marikina River and San Juan River.
The Pasig River is technically a tidal estuary, as the flow direction depends upon the water level difference between Manila Bay and Laguna de Bay. During the dry season, the water level in Laguna de Bay is low with the river's flow direction dependent on the tides. During the wet season, when the water level of Laguna de Bay is high, the flow is reversed towards Manila Bay.
The Pasig River used to be an important transport route and source of water for Spanish Manila. Due to negligence and industrial development, the river has become very polluted and is considered dead (i.e., unable to sustain life) by ecologists. The Pasig River Rehabilitation Commission (PRRC), which was established to oversee rehabilitation efforts for the river, is supported by private sector organisations such as the Clean and Green Foundation, Inc. that introduced the Piso para sa Pasig (Filipino: A peso for the Pasig) campaign in the 1990s.
