In 1791, Alexander Hamilton chose Paterson, NJ as the first industrial city in the United States. Alexander Hamilton and his Society for Useful Manufactures planned for Paterson, New Jersey to be the center of American industrialism and to reduce the new nation’s reliance on foreign industry.
Paterson, New Jersey thrived for the next century and a half, and among its manufacturing successes could count the Colt revolver and the first submarine, the latter tested by John Phillip Holland in the Passaic River just above the Great Falls.

The Great Falls of the Passaic River is a prominent waterfall, 77 feet (23 m) high, on the Passaic River in the city of Paterson in Passaic County in northern New Jersey in the United States. The falls and surrounding area are protected as part of the Paterson Great Falls National Historical Park, administered by the National Park Service. The Congress authorized its establishment in 2009.
One of the United States' largest waterfalls, it played a significant role in the early industrial development of New Jersey starting in the earliest days of the nation. It is part of the Great Falls of Paterson-Garret Mountain National Natural Landmark. It has also been designated as a National Historic Landmark District since 1976. The Great Falls' raceway and power systems were designated an Historic Civil Engineering Landmark in 1977.
In 1778, Alexander Hamilton visited the falls and was impressed by its potential for industry. Later when Hamilton was the nation's Secretary of Treasury, he selected the site of the nation's first planned industrial city, which he called a national manufactory. In 1791, Hamilton helped found the Society for the Establishment of Useful Manufactures (S.U.M.), state-chartered private corporation to fulfill this vision. The town of Paterson was founded by the society and named after New Jersey Governor William Paterson in appreciation of his efforts to promote the society.
Hamilton commissioned civil engineer Pierre Charles L'Enfant, responsible for the layout of the new capital at Washington, D.C. to design the system of canals known as raceways supplying the power for the watermills in the new town. As a result the Paterson became the nucleus for a burgeoning mill industry. In 1793, two years after the society's foundation, the falls was the site of the first water-powered cotton spinning mill in New Jersey. In 1812, it was the site of the state's first continuous roll paper mill. Other products whose construction used the falls as a power source include the Rogers Locomotive Works (1832), the Colt revolver (1837), and the USS Holland (SS-1) (1898). The oldest extant structure in the historic district is the Phoenix Mill, built in 1813.
The society continued operation until 1945 when its charter and property were sold to the city of Paterson. The area fell into disuse with the steep decline of industry in the region during the 20th century. In 1971, the Great Falls Preservation and Development Corporation were established to restore and redevelop the historic mill buildings and raceways.
Paterson Great Falls National Historical Park was authorized to be added to the National Park System of the United States under the Omnibus Public Land Management Act. On March 30, 2009, President Obama signed legislation authorizing the falls as a national historical park, which would provide additional federal protections for the 77-foot waterfall. By 2011, Great Falls State Park and other land along the Passaic River were transferred to the federal government for the creation of the park. Formal establishment as a unit of the National Park System required action by the Secretary of the Interior, which took place November 7, 2011, when Secretary Salazar formally accepted lands on behalf of the United States, and dedicated the park as the nation's 397th park system unit.

Antietam Auto Tour (stops 1-5)
A fall drive through some of the Antietam National Battlefield Auto Tour Route.
My first attempt at filming the tour route.
November 5, 2011
The Saratoga National Historical Park, NY, United States.
A quick tour of the Saratoga National Historical Park, Stillwater, NY, United States.
This is an important battlefield site because it was the site of the Battles of Saratoga, the first significant American military victory of the American Revolutionary War in 1777. Basically the hotch potch American militia fought and comprehensively beat the might of the British Army.
I literally had 45 minutes to run around the park before it was closed up so I couldn't really give a good summary of events here in 1777. All I will say is the park is a beautiful location to visit, has plenty of nice views (and walking routes) and a centre with lots of info (which I didn't have time to absorb properly).
Great Falls State Park
Adventure to Great Falls Park! with my Dad and little brother. We went to both the Maryland and the Virginia side. Great Falls Park is a small National Park Service site in Virginia, United States. Situated on 800 acres along the banks of the Potomac River in northern Fairfax County, the park is a disconnected but integral part of the George Washington Memorial Parkway.

Hōnaunau, Hawaii - Pu'uhonua O Hōnaunau National Historical Park (2018)
Puʻuhonua o Hōnaunau National Historical Park is a United States National Historical Park located on the west coast of the island of Hawaiʻi in the U.S. state of Hawaiʻi. The historical park preserves the site where, up until the early 19th century, Hawaiians who broke a kapu (one of the ancient laws) could avoid certain death by fleeing to this place of refuge or puʻuhonua. The offender would be absolved by a priest and freed to leave. Defeated warriors and non-combatants could also find refuge here during times of battle. The grounds just outside the Great Wall that encloses the puʻuhonua were home to several generations of powerful chiefs.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE: The original release sheet reads:
An American city salutes the Army on THE BIG PICTURE -- During this past summer, THE BIG PICTURE staff covered a very unusual activity in community relations, arranged by the Alexandria, Virginia, Chamber of Commerce, in recognition of the Army's important contribution to the social and economic development of the city of Alexandria. To show the cordial relations that exist between the civilians and the soldiers who live as friendly neighbors in the area, host-narrator MSgt. Stuart Queen prepared a film treatment and requested cameramen from the Signal Corps' Photographic Agency in the Pentagon to shoot the story. Alexandria's gesture in saluting the United States Army with a week devoted to expressions of friendly cooperation was a milestone in civilian-military relationships. Even more important, however, was the spirit behind it. This was a spirit that could be duplicated throughout the country wherever civilians live in close contact with the citizen-turned soldier. Alexandria -- City of Understanding is a quiet, yet sincere documentary which has focused on this historic city in such a way that one feels the presence of the great Washington and the humble Lee.
