Paw Paw Brewing - Coconut Porter
Coming to you from the Southwest side of the state, it's my first taste of Coconut Porter from Paw Paw brewing (aka 2 Paws) in Paw Paw Michigan. I'm a fan of porters, and I enjoy coconut porters - which are difficult to do the right way. Is this going to tickle my fancy or get my ire instead? Stay tuned to find out for sure!

Michigan Brewery Road Trip
After securing an interview with Founders Brewing Company in Grand Rapids Michigan, the Better Beer Authority decided to make a vacation out of it - ROAD TRIP! We hit 11 breweries in 3 days and sampled beer until our palettes were complete mush. It was a blast. Watch the video and travel along with us.

We arrived on Thursday night and hit Bell's Brewery in Kalamazoo, MI -- Ratebeer's #3 rated brewery in the world -- We wanted to interview Larry Bell, but that punk wouldn't return our phone calls, But I ain't bitter. So, we just decided to have a few warm-up beers at the Eccentric Café, which is their brewpub. We didn't want to get too crazy because we had an early wake-up call for our interview at Founders the next day and I had to get my beauty sleep. We had some samplers that came on these cool platters in the shape of the state of Michigan and called it a night soon thereafter.
The next morning we woke up early and headed to Grand Rapids, Michigan for our interview at Founders. We set up the interview in their boardroom and I wasn't sure what to expect. When Dave Engbers and Mike Stevens, the founders of Founders, walked in at 10am and offered us a pre-interview beer I knew it was going to be a great talk. I can't say enough good things about Founders. The guys running are a ton of fun and they have some amazing beer. Please check out the full interview with them on our Youtube channel. After the interview we went to their taproom and we could have stayed there all day. They had a great selection of beers and the beer hall was already buzzing by lunchtime. But we had other stops to hit, so we loaded up and headed to Brewery Vivant.

Our final destination for the day was New Holland Brewing Company in Holland, Michigan. This was definitely one of the breweries I was most looking forward to. I love their beer called The Poet, so it was a real treat to get that on tap. The bar was hopping with a live band. Knowing that this was our last stop, we relaxed a little and had some fun. Richard ordered Das Boot and we finished our night off with 2 liters of Mad Hatter IPA -- which was a great way to end the day.
ARCADIA ALES
Dark Horse Brewing Company in Marshall, Michigan was one of our favorite stops on the trip. They had great beers and a cool brewpub with mugs hanging everywhere. Our waitress found one of the brewers, Dave, to give us a tour of the brewery. They have an outdoor garden area with a stage that would be a lot of fun on a warmer day. On the tour, we met Wiggs, their resident hippy and production manager. Afterwards, we went up to their VIP loft where the tours go for for tastings. We shared a few samples with Wiggs and learned more about Dark Horse. They are currently #26 on ratebeer's Top Breweries in the World list. When we were about to leave, Wiggs gave us a case of beer for the road. In it were six bottles of Bourbon Barrel Aged Plead the 5th, which ended up being the Better Beer Authority's #1 beer of 2012. You should definitely stop at this brewery if you are in the area.

Founders Brewing Palm Reader Beer Review
Today's beer review is Palm Reader from Founders Brewing Co. From the site: A tribute to our beautiful state, this refreshing ale is made with Michigan-grown Crystal and Zuper-Saazer hops. Derived from Saaz, a traditional noble hop hailing from the Czech Republic, these Zuper-Saazer hops, grown locally at Hophead Farms, impart intense and fruity aromas. Combined with the citrus notes of the Crystal hops and the simple malt bill, this beer is crisp, bright and delicious.

What's Right: Celebrating birthdays for those in hospice
Kicking off our series What's Right in Your Community...What started out as a group of west Michigan volunteers wanting to help has now turned into a state-wide program to celebrate birthdays of those on hospice care. When someone is on hospice it is typically some of their last few months of life. Newschannel 3's Jessica Wheeler went shopping with workers from Hospice Michigan to see for herself how they are brightening up what could be someone's last birthday.I had a registered nurse come to me and indicate that one of her patients had a birthday coming up and she wanted to know if there was anything volunteer services could provide, said Kathy Julien, the volunteer services manager at Hospice of MichiganJulien took the birthday program idea from a nurse and it snow-balled from there. So I baked a cake and put together a birthday balloon held by a stuffed bear.Other volunteers made bracelets, cards and blankets. Eventually the birthday program turned into an effort by an entire community to provide gifts to those receiving end of life care.I heard about how well that went and so I thought why not make this available of all of our patients? Everybody should have the opportunity to celebrate their birthday, said Julien. For many it's their final one. They're usually within the last 6 months of life so we are capturing that last birthday, said Julien. That's where Meijer comes in.Starting this month the company is providing gift cards to all the Hospice of Michigan offices so all 1,400 patients across the state can have one last celebration. It's a feeling of doing something right for someone. It's a warm feeling knowing that we are part of someone's life and it's not even being part of the last birthday it's actually a celebration of life with them, said Gabe Ensenat, Meijer Store director. We had the opportunity to shop with Kathy for 2 patients. She picked out special cakes just for them, along with flowers and balloons. She tells us the birthday celebrations go beyond the patients, giving their families one last happy memory to hold on to.To have the family pull together and celebrate and recall special memories and have the loved ones there I think it lessens that fear of what's going to take place, said Julien.

Snow Bike Race 31 January 2013
Sun Valley, Idaho's first snow bike race. This race happened right after XC ski races on the same course. They held it last in case the course got trashed. The big tires hardly made a dent in the course, except when a rider crashed. Snow bikes are allowed on Blaine County's multi-use bike path all year, which is groomed for XC skiing in the winter.
