The Pea Island Story
Reporter Stephanie Frederic, working with researchers and authors David Wright and David Zoby, tell the story of the Pea Island Surfmen. Pea Island Life-Saving Station was a life-saving station on Pea Island, on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. It was the first life-saving station in the country to have an all-black crew, and it was the first in the nation to have a black man, Richard Etheridge, as commanding officer.[1]The first all-black unit - forerunners of the modern day Coast Guard - rescued troubled ships and their personnel over 100 years ago. The Pea Island surfmen saved thousands of lives. Through Zoby & Wright, the Pea Island surfmen were finally recognized for their heroic efforts with a gold medal.
Wright and Zoby's book is Fire on the Beach: Recovering the Lost Story of Richard Etheridge and the Pea Island Lifesavers.

Afternoon drive along one of America's most scenic highways... NC Route 12 along the Cape Hatteras National Seashore. This is Part 2 of a 9 part video. Enjoy a virtual driving tour from Oregon Inlet, the Herbert C. Bonner Bridge, and the Pea Island Wildlife Refuge. This video was filmed on my Sony HD Handycam during my annual trip to the Outer Banks on May 31, 2013.
I'm sorry for the mute in the audio. YouTube has a stupid copyright problem where unless they're making money for the music in my video, I cant have it play on the car's radio in the background of my video. You know, I could help that when I filmed the video. I would have rather listened to the pitch of the car's engine for an hour rather than music while I drove all the way down Hatteras Island. Ohwell, I own the song and I didn't buy it and as long as I have the video saved on my memory card and computer, YouTube and the copyright owner can't and won't do anything about it.

We spent two days exploring the Outer Banks of North Carolina. We've heard amazing things about the islands from friends and locals, so we had to check it out for ourselves. And it did not disappoint!
From the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse and Bodie Island Lighthouse to the beaches and beautiful sunrises and sunsets, this was an unforgettable experience!
We camped at the Oregon Inlet Campground which is a great location for a few reasons. First, it's close to town. Just a 10-minute drive to Nag's Head and all the restaurants and amenities there. Second, it's on the beach, but protected by dunes. You walk up over the dunes right onto the beach. And third, it's inexpensive. At the time of this video (June 2017), it was only $28/night. We recognize that our experience in OBX is different from usual. Most people rent a giant beach house with their family and spend a week doing family excursions like mini-golf and the high ropes course. We, however, do not have any family here and we are on a pretty tight budget, so we did all the free and inexpensive things like camping, hanging out on the beach, and visiting lighthouses.

On a beautiful, clear day, Phil, Eileen and Emily join us for a super deluxe flight over the Outer Banks of NC! Departing from Manteo Airport, they head south over the Oregon Inlet Bridge to the ocean, cruising by Pea Island Wildlife Refuge and the villages of Rodanthe, Salvo and Waves before reaching the Hatteras LIghthouse and Cape Point. Continuing south, they circle Ocracoke Island then head back north right along the beach enjoying an aerial perspective of the Outer Banks!
Coastal Habitats of the Outer Banks and the Birds They Support
On April 27, 2017, the UNC Coastal Studies Institute (UNC CSI) hosted a lecture on North Carolina’s Outer Banks birding as part of its “Science on the Sound” lecture series. This series, held monthly, highlights information on coastal topics and issues in northeast North Carolina. This month, the program featured Jeff Lewis, horticulturist with the UNC Coastal Studies Institute. Mr. Lewis’ presentation, entitled “Coastal Habitats of the Outer Banks and The Birds They Support ”, will highlight Outer Banks coastal habitats and the birds that they support. During the program, the audience gained a better awareness of the bird species that live here on the Outer Banks, their behaviors and the relationship between coastal habitats and the bird species that are found within them.

From the Pea Island Audubon Sanctuary to the Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge or Maritime Forest and Marshes, the Coastal Kayak Touring Company covers the outer banks’ variety of waterways with tours led by enthusiastic, knowledgeable guides. Producer Derek Long accompanied this group on a trip into the Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge where he learned a little about the natural and cultural history of the area, sees a family of black bear, an obstinate alligator, and before the evening was ends howls with the Red Wolves.

Outer Banks
The Outer Banks (also known as OBX) is a 200-mile (320-km) long string of narrow barrier islands off the coast of North Carolina and a small portion of Virginia, beginning in the southeastern corner of Virginia Beach on the east coast of the United States. They cover most of the North Carolina coastline, separating the Currituck Sound, Albemarle Sound, and Pamlico Sound from the Atlantic Ocean.
The Outer Banks is a major tourist destination and is known for its temperate climate and wide expanse of open beachfront. The Cape Hatteras National Seashore has four campgrounds where visitors may camp.
