GOPR0 Peace Bridge to statue of Choibalsan on my BMW F650GS.MP4
On my way to Stormriders MC club to get a new battery and brake pads for my BMW F650 GS, Ulaanbaatar Mongolia.
This section is from Peace Bridge to the statue of Choibalsan (SP?). Heading North
As requested by scifi guy, here's a bit of a guide:
Over the bridge you will see on the left Naran Plaza, on the right is the Children's park, where a massive hotel is being built (don't ask how that was allowed). Just when the traffic gets thicker, on the left is MB's Beer& food, very nice (won the beer tasting contest last year), then the Grand Khan Irish pub. On the right is the Monis building, HQ of many western mining companies, and Rio Tinto/ Oyu Tolgoi. When I am waiting at the lights therea re a couple of pubs/restaurants to the right. never been there. The very talk interestingly curved building is the Blue Sky Tower. very new. Still working out how to run a hotel. the Sky bar on 23 serves very potent Long Island Iced Teas. I'm told I had 4, but I am not convinced. I know I left half un-consumed...oh yeah plus the two 30 year old Hennessey Cognacs. It was a going away thing! anyway.I do remember it all and did nothing stupid.
At the lights where I turn right from Chinggis avenue onto peace avenue and then turn left, that tall building is the MCS building called Central, next to Sukhbaatar square.
After that on the left is the parliament building and on the right the state opera building.
Puma hotel is just after that, but you can't see it. I would say though that the Deli Darbar restaurant is very good. Sadly I heard someone got some really bad stomach thing a couple of weeks ago :(
At the intersection I stop at with the friendly people crossing (they love teh camera on my head) you will see a statue. That's marshal Choibalsan. He is allegedly responsible for teh Pogrom (right word) when the soviets/communists took over. Mostly responsible for killing the Budhist monks. At the time 1/4 of the male population was monks, and most of the economy seemed to be taken with feeding and supporting them. Also all decisions were made by the monks, even if they knew nothing about it (eg economics, herding, government...) anyway that's what I was told.
They got rid of the stalin statue a few months ago, so I guess soon enough that one will go too.

By the way, despite calling to ensure they had the parts, the moorcycle repair place did not have a battery that fit, or the new brake pads. A waste of time, but an excude to ride!
The ride seems to have charged the old battery too...so maybe last time the guys made a loose connection whilst repairing the hand grip heater.

Notice that the traffic is worse than last time at Tsagaan Sar. Still better on a bike.

울란바토르의 중심가인 평화대로, 여행의 시작이다. 평화대로를 따라 걷다보면 광대한 몽골
대륙이 느껴질 정도로 큰 광장을 만나게 되는데, 이곳은 울란바토르 중심이라 하는 수흐바토르 광장이다. 이 광장을 중심으로 중앙정부청사, 국립극장, 증권거래소 등 주요 건물들이 위치해 있다. 몽골에 온 사람이라면 누구나 반드시 이곳에 들른다는 말대로 광장은 세계 각지에서 온 나와 같은 여행객들로 붐비고 있었다. 광장 한 편에는 어린이들을 위한 것으로 보이는 다양한 장난감들이 있었는데, 돈을 받고 사진 촬영을 해주는 일종의 소품이라고 했다. 그러고 보니 나도 어렸을 적 이런 자동차 앞에서 찍은 사진이 있는 듯하다. 그런데 재미있는 것은 사진사들의 옷이었다. 하나 같이 한글이 쓰여 있는 옷을 입고 있었는데 한국의 중고물건들이 품질이 좋아 인기라고 한다. 나는 미소가 절로 나왔다. 휴식을 취하고 있는 사람들 속에서 나는 또 재미있는 물건을 발견했다. 사무실에서나 쓸법한 하얀 전화기. 이 전화기는 무선 공중전화기인데 우리 돈으로 1분에 100원 정도의 요금을 내고 이용한다는 것. 한 장소에 고정돼있는 공중전화기가 아니라, 이동식인 몽골의 공중전화를 보며 나는 이곳이 유목민의 땅임을 새삼 느꼈다. 광장 중심에는 몽골의 혁명의 아버지로 불리는 수흐바토르의 동상이 서 있다. 1921년, 중국으로 부터 독립을 선언하고 1922년 몽골 인민군 총 사련관이 된 수흐바토르. 그는 서른 살 나이에 세상을 떠났지만 그의 동상에는 북방민족의 호탕한 기운이 느껴지는 문구가 새겨져 있다. ‘만일 우리 모두에게 공통된 노력과 의지가 있다면 우리가 이 세상에서 이루지 못할 것이 없고, 배우지 못할 것이 없으며 실패할 것이 없다.’

After 3 hours and 40 minutes waiting on the Peace Bridge at Chinggis Avenue close to Sukhbaatar Square in Ulaanbaatar city center, the capital of Mongolia, the main signal light turns to yellow. The freight train, loaded with coal in the open cargo wagons type Eaos, approaches of direction Sainschand, is set beautiful into the light of the afternoon sun, even if the shadows are long. The Mongolian double diesel locomotive “Phantomas” 2TE116UM 010 carries the goods train on the Transmongolian railway and will reach in short time the central station with some whistles. Left in the video is Narnii Road highway, the fence belongs to the leisure park, same as the big wheel. Right in the picture is the fallow of Dund-Gol river.

Passenger train service in Mongolia: what an amazing passenger train. Like a lindworm trundles the train number 276 parallel to the Narnii Road in Ulaanbaatar, filmed from the Peace Bridge at Chinggis Avenue. It seems to be, that the green passenger coaches cars carriages will never end. The Mongolian diesel locomotive 2ZAGAL 010 hauled train has recently left the main station and started in the late afternoon its 704 kilometers / 438 miles long railroad journey through the night on the Transmongolian railway line. Tomorrow morning, the train will arrive in Zamyn-Üud, the last station in Mongolia, just before the Chinese border.

몽골의 문화적 자부심을 볼 수 있는 곳, 국제 지능 박물관을 찾았다. 이곳에는 5000개가 넘는 퍼즐이 전시되어 있다는데. 몽골의 문화가 퍼즐과 무슨 관계가 있을까 궁금해진다. “퍼즐은 유목문화에서 발생되었어요. 이동하기 위해 울타리, 게르, 가구들을 분해하고 조립하려다 보니 퍼즐이 생겨난 겁니다.“ 2조각으로 된 퍼즐로부터 시작해서 몇 십, 몇 백 조각까지… 심지어 673개의 조각으로 만들어진 퍼즐도 전시가 되어 있는데 언뜻 보기엔 비슷비슷한 모양이지만 푸는 방법은 하나하나 다 다르고, 복잡한 것은 무려 5만6천 번을 움직여야 분해하고 조립할 수가 있다고 한다. 이곳 관장님은 55년 동안 퍼즐만을 생각해 온 고집스런 분이다. 가장 신기했던 것은 체스 퍼즐이었다. 체스판과 말, 그리고 말을 담아 두는 통까지 모두 퍼즐로 만들어져 있다. “여기에 금, 은, 진주, 에메랄드 등 9가지 종류의 보석 108개가 박혀 있습니다. 이 문양은 제 이름을 상징합니다. 자, 이렇게 해서 체스판이 나옵니다. 하지만 체스를 하려면 말들이 필요하지요. 말을 꺼내려면 이렇게 한 번, 두 번, 세 번, 네 번의 퍼즐을 풀어야합니다. 이곳이 체스 말을 담아두는 곳입니다.“ 이 체스판은 한 면이 7.6m나 된다. 세계에서 가장 클 것 같다는 생각이 드는데 이걸 만든 이유는 체스 말을 퍼즐로 만들고 싶어서였다고 한다. 체스 말은 4명이 2년 동안 만들었다고 하는데, 검은 말은 칭기즈칸을 비롯한 몽골역사의 주인공들이고, 흰 말은 현대 몽골의 중요 인물들이다. ”자, 이들 중 한 가지를 보여드리겠습니다. 이쪽은 칭기즈칸 편의 말들입니다. 이것은 그 중에 궁중마차입니다. 이렇게, 이렇게 열면 칭기즈칸 시대에 회의를 하던 마차의 모습이 나옵니다. 칭기즈칸의 아홉 명의 부하 자리와 마유주까지 있습니다.“ 과연 퍼즐이 몽골문화와 어떤 관련이 있는 것일까? “몽골인들은 게르나 가축우리를 항상 퍼즐 형태로 만들었습니다. 퍼즐 형태의 대표적인 예가 게르라고 할 수 있습니다. 게르는 모든 것들이 분해되죠. 그래서 10분 만에 짓고, 10분 만에 해체할 수 있습니다. 마유주를 발효시키기 위해 젓는 막대기도 퍼즐로 만들어져 있습니다. 이것은 큰 막대기, 저것은 작은 막대기입니다. 또 침대, 식탁, 의자들도 퍼즐 형태로 만들었습니다. 여기 있는 부엌 선반도 분해와 조립이 가능합니다. 이 침대 역시 이렇게 하나씩, 하나씩 분해됩니다. 이런 식으로 말이죠. 이 지붕 막대도 이런 식으로 분해됩니다. 이 부분이 깊이 조립되어 있어서 바람이 불어도 흔들리지 않습니다.“

UNICEF: Improving Mongolia's juvenile justice system
ULAANBAATAR, Mongolia, 28 September 2007 - In Ulaanbaatar, the bustling capital of Mongolia, five dishevelled children dart across the dusty pavement and pry open a heavy manhole cover. They slip into a narrow hole deep below the city -- for now, this is where these children are living.
No one knows exactly how many street children are living in Mongolia, but estimates in Ulaanbaatar range from as low as 300 to as high as one thousand.
Poverty is the number one factor sending kids into the streets, says UNICEF Representative Bertrand Desmoulins. More often than not, they are victims of domestic violence, abandonment, broken and dysfunctional homes. Ultimately, they may come into conflict with the law, victims of a harsh justice system that is ill prepared to cope with this new reality.
UNICEF believes that legal reform which will amend the current system and protect children is an urgent priority. Equally important is ensuring that a wide range of social services are established to help prevent crime. As part of an innovative programme, UNICEF is supporting the local government to help divert juveniles from formal court procedures.

Roerich Peace Pact.
TODAY is APRIL 15TH, 2015 (10.12 ~KIN 12 12HUMAN). On a day like today 80 years ago in 1935, the first REAL step towards a peaceful World was taken in Washington DC: The Roerich Pact was first agreed to by twenty-one nations of the Americas and signed as a treaty in the White House, in the presence of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, by all the members of the Pan-American Union. It was later signed by other countries also.
The year 2015 marks the 80th anniversary of the signing of this groundbreaking treaty. “The history of international treaties shows us how many of them were relevant and applicable to the times in which they were signed, but then lapsed into irrelevance. The Roerich Pact, however, has kept its heart and its life, and is linked to the needs of today’s chaotic world as much as ever. In so many countries we see a deterioration of cultural values and a disregard for the right of all cultural treasures to have their own continued existence, forever protected and unimpeded. We see destruction of life, property, and the inheritance of the creative genius of the nations. One can only hope that a greater awareness of the importance of humanity’s cultural heritage will increase, rather than deteriorate. There is no greater value to a nation than its culture.”
