San Juan Mtn Guides | Vestal Peak via Wham Ridge Alpine Climbing
One of our most popular trips in the summer is our 3 Day Vestal Peak via Wham Ridge. Vestal Peak (13,864 ft.) is one of Colorado’s most sought after Centennial 13’er climbs, and the Wham Ridge (III, 5.4) is quite possibly the best route in the entire Grenadier Range. The rock is of a much higher quality than the rest of the San Juans, and offers wonderful climbing at altitude.
The trip takes us into the beautiful Vestal Basin, where ideal campsites and amazing scenery typify the area. The Trinity Peaks and Arrow Peak also dominate the scenery of this high alpine basin, though nothing quite compares to the aesthetic Wham Ridge on Vestal Peak. This is a great trip to get out in the San Juan backcountry for a classic climb in a short period of time.
An added bonus is the opportunity to climb neighboring Arrow Peak (13,805′) on the 3rd day of the itinerary if weather and participants would like to nab the summit of another sought after Grenadier Range peak.

Potosi Peak Panorama
A 360 degree panorama of the mountains and valleys surrounding Potosi Peak high above Yankee Boy and Governer Basins and Ouray, CO. Video is from a June 10, 2011 climbing adventure with San Juan Mountain Guides.
Climbing Lemah Mountain
This was a two day trip to climb Lemah Mountain, WA. This peak is very close to Seattle but seldom visited. As I made my approach I unexpectedly came across Whinnimic Falls. It has an impressive 350 foot free fall. Later in the day I ran into a thundershower with snow and hail. The next day was my summit day and the rock was nicer than I expected. Climbed in July 2009 and I pieced together the clips with some recent photos.
Gondola Ride in Telluride Colorado: Mountain Village to San Sophia Station
Riding Telluride's gondola system, the only free transportation system of it's kind in the United States. This video is my riding the Gondola from the Mountain Market to the Mountain Village station than up 1000 feet to the top at the San Sophia Station at over 10,000 feet in elevation. It also drops down to the town of Telluride, a 2000 foot drop from the San Sophia Station. I did not ride that segment on this day as I was running out of time, but do have another video with that coming up soon ????

Film was made in Colorado. We took a trip from Texas to Colorado in seek of some fresh air on a long Labor Day Weekend. The weather got down in the 20's and we encountered 60+ MPH winds on top of the mountain... all to live and tell the story!
The song is not mine, it is a song that I edited specifically for the video.

Colorado Big Snow Winter 2018 2019
The 2018-2019 winter in Colorado set many records. It was the worst avalanche season in history, with major avalanches closing highways and passes, sweeping away motorists, and skiers, and taking out wide swaths of forest from slopes where slides were previously unknown.
Most Colorado ski areas reported snow base depth over 100 inches in March. Wolf Creek had more than 200 inches of snow. Locations in the San Juan Range had more than 900 inches of snow this season, and many other locations had 600 to 800 inches of snow fall. Average is about 400 inches of snow fall.
It made up the difference from the catastrophic drought winter of 2017-2018. Newton Themodynamic law? Equal and opposite reaction? In back to back years... uh...er... well...
Many mountain routes will have snow problems all summer and beyond. Some trail heads will be closed indefinitely until avalanche snow melts, and access damage can be repaired. CDOT plowed 40-60 foot snow depths off Red Mountain Pass, and the Silverton-Durango Narrow Gauge Railroad is clearing even more from avalanche chutes crossing its tracks.
Amazing year.
