The Pecos River Rescue
After months of planning, we set off on a 5 day, 60 mile trip down one of the last untamed rivers in Texas. The Pecos River. Even with all our preparedness and planning, nothing could have prepared us for what was to happen. We were cautious and ready for flash flooding, and chose our campsites accordingly, but I don't think anyone was ready for 33.79 feet of water. We lost everything to the river, but left with our lives.
Pecos River 2013
We spent the weekend paddling the Lower Pecos River at the first of November. This one is the long version, but figured I would leave it for anyone wanting to see more of the area.

I worked hard to salvage this video. My computer originally rendered it with loads of flaws......video freezing for long periods of time while the audio kept on, etc. So annoying. I had to recut it and this is it. It's still not perfect, but it's WAY better than it was before.
I hope you like it anyway.
I live near the Dallas area. I go to Six Flags a lot, so you might check out those videos also.
I'm currently an Uber driver, so the content might be Uber related at times.
I'll upload whatever comes to mind or is happening on any given day, but I try to go to interesting places.

Enjoy the unique tower room and turret room, security/intercom system and electronic gate at entrance. You can see Texas from here!--you have to check out the balcony view! A real must-see. From the current home owner, Mr. Don Mielhs: It is great living on a scenic hill here in Carlsbad. It offers many of these splendors, especially living at 916 Fountain Drive. Viewing the city lights, enjoying the magnificent sun rises and the beautiful sunsets. Because the Fountain Hills subdivision is located 300 hundred feet above the city proper, this presents a panoramic view of the entire countryside that no other area in this corner of the state can begin to offer. Some of these exceptional views include watching a full moon rise from an outdoor balcony, and watching the storm clouds moving over the Guadalupe mountains,in the winter months, sometimes these mountains are covered with snow, which can be seen from some of our rooms that are located on the southwest part of our house. Most of the year, during the day it is so wonderful and refreshing to be sitting on the patio watching, listening to the large water fountain. On a warm summer's day it is very enjoyable looking towards the north and seeing the water at lake Avalon which gives a person a cool feeling in an atmosphere surrounded by flowers and a mild southwest breeze making it ideal for relaxing. At night time the patio offers an ambient experience gazing at the sky and the stars while looking down on a beautifully lighted Flume that is located above the Pecos River near Heritage Park. Heavy Rains Spur New Mexico Evacuations, Close Caverns Park
Heavy rains lingering over southeastern New Mexico from Tropical Storm Odile forced people out of more than 100 houses and kept the popular Carlsbad Caverns National Park closed on Monday. Bobby St. John, spokesman for the Eddy County Emergency Operations Center, said people were evacuated from 118 homes early Monday because of water spilling over the banks of the Pecos River. Floods at the end of last week forced the closure of the Carlsbad Caverns National Park, and it remained shut on Monday. Authorities said, a 39-year-old Texas man died on Friday after being swept away by swift flowing waters near Loving, New Mexico.
Flash Flooding On Rocky Arroyo - US Hwy 285 Bridge. 9 12 2013
Three days of very heavy rain produced widespread flash flooding across parts of southeastern New Mexico. Chaves County was hit hard on Wednesday, September 11, 2013. Eddy County had its turn today Thursday, September 12, 2013. Over 13 inches of rain was reported in the Pine Springs area, and over 10 inches was reported in the Queen area. Over 9 inches of rain also fell 11 miles northwest of Carlsbad. Widespread 2 - 4 amounts were common across the Pecos Valley.
Reflections on Respect, Carlsbad, NM Part 6
Successful Reflections on Respect Candlelight Vigil in Carlsbad, New Mexico.
Ninety concerned citizens of Eddy County gathered Friday evening for a candlelight vigil calling for respect and civility in the community and nation at large. The Reflections on Respect gathering was held Friday, April 16th at 7:00 PM on the Eddy County Courthouse Lawn.
The event featured two local speakers, prayers, moments of silence, and singing performances.
One of the event organizers was former mayoral candidate Wendy Amato. The goal of the event, says Amato, was to create a stronger community among people who are compassionate and hopeful. We wanted to show not only Carlsbad, but other communities, how powerful it can be when people come together to set a positive intention.
Rather than complain about whats wrong with our country, Amato added, We wanted to come together to celebrate whats good: diversity, kindness, caring, and hope for a better future. The event organizers represented a diversity of community, religious, and political perspectives. The belief we share in common is that the use of fear or the threat of violence does nothing to solve problems, said the Rev. Dave Rogers, one of the invited speakers. We are simply reaching out to encourage rational, meaningful, and respectful engagement!
Rogers stated in his speech: The good news is the bad news is wrong! There are those who would want to scare us into believing the bad news and even become enslaved to the bad news! But the good news isthe bad news is wrong! Peace is possible!
Somehow, we all need to be able to discuss controversial topics calmly and find common ground, rather than pointing fingers and insulting each other, Amato added. The response to the event was extraordinary. Many people stayed after the vigil to talk about how we can continue productive dialogue, by further vigils and meetings.
Amato said she was inspired to organize the event after watching a documentary about women in Liberia. That country was embroiled in a terrible civil war, Amato explained. Until the women in Liberia came together in the market every day, not to sell things, but to pray, sing, and discuss how to spread the message of peace. With their efforts, the dictator was exiled, a transitional government was installed, and warlords disarmed. A woman was even elected President.
Amato continued: That is the kind of power that groups of positive, optimistic, and determined people can exert. We came together to set the intention of finding common ground and instituting nonviolent communication in our communities.
Rogers talked in his speech about responding thoughtfully to rancor, rather than reacting impulsively. Instead of reacting in fear and pandering to the dehumanizing hatred of those who offend, we need to all go to the BAR. That is, Breathe And Relax, then respond! It is only when we take a step back, make an honest investment in understanding the other, and respond in love that we can transcend the destructive and devastating power of the fear.
