Welcome to Lake Geneva, Wisconsin
Lake Geneva, well known for its charm and elegance, boasts a lifestyle with a relaxed atmosphere. Referred to as one of the jewels of the Midwest it offers sparkling lake waters, inviting boutiques and galleries, scenic parks and walkways, and both casual and gourmet restaurants.
The city is located in Southeastern Wisconsin's Walworth County, a few miles north of the Illinois state line, 75 miles north of Chicago and 45 miles southeast of Milwaukee. I-43 is six miles to the north and I-94 is 27 miles to the east. With its four seasons of white winters, green springs and summers, and breathtakingly colorful falls, it is a favorite destination for Midwestern tourists who come to enjoy the many festivals, lake cruises, delightful restaurants and local hospitality.
This is a community of historical homes and buildings that dates back to the early 1800's. After the Civil War the town became a resort for the wealthy Chicago families who began construction of the mansions on the lake, and Lake Geneva became the Newport (RI) of the West. The construction of the mansions, as well as household employment, offered job opportunities to the local residents, adding to the milling, furniture, wagon and typewriter manufacturing enterprises.
The Lake Geneva residents enjoy living in a pleasant, friendly small-town atmosphere and always welcome visitors and guests to participate in an array of activities and attractions that encompass its hub, Geneva Lake.
Bike Ride Around Lake Geneva, WI
What a beautiful morning for a bike ride around Lake Geneva, WI. It was a little cool this morning but a very pretty day to be out. I stopped in front of the Fontana municipal pier to take a picture. I probably should have been out showing property but I took a break from the real estate business to enjoy the morning.

GoPro: First MTB Ride of 2016 - Port Washington, WI
So it was finally nice enough outside to go mountain biking, and I went to my local MTB trail that is about 5 mins away from my house. I was really excited to go until I got there to find out most of the trails were down. Its about a 3 mile course normally but I still rode instead of going somewhere farther away. The course was a bit muddy and I was really out of shape. Also this was my first time using my clipless pedals. Hope you enjoy the video!

Burlington Wisconsin Biking
Seven Waters Trail
The Seven Waters Trail passes near: Wind Lake, Waubeesee Lake, Muskego Creek, Fox River, Long Lake Creek, White River and Echo Lake. The trail begins at Highway 142 at Bushnell Park in the Town of Burlington, coming into the City of Burlington near Riverside Park, following the beautiful Fox River. The trail runs north along the east side Highway 36 crossing Highway 36 to join a newly constructed segment in the Rochester area. This new segment of the trail winds through Saller Woods, connecting to Eagle Case Park, and then joins the previous trail to run north past Waterford and Wind Lake. The construction of the new segment creates a seamless link from one end of the county to the other. The final segment of the trail is on the east side of Highway 36 and proceeds northward to the Waukesha County line (City of Muskego). The new segment of the trail is blacktop with the remainder gravel.
White River Trail
11 miles of this new state trail are open for biking. The trail begins at Spring Valley Road just west of Burlington off Highway 36 and goes through Lyons and Springfield. Takes you past the Pedal & Cup at Springfield (bike rentals, snacks and drinks). The final segment of the trail runs into Elkhorn. The crushed limestone tail takes you past numerous bridges, scenic vistas, quaint towns, farmlands and wetlands.

2012 Lake Geneva Half Marathon - Lake Geneva, WI - Saturday May 12 2012 - John V. Karavitis
2012 Lake Geneva Half Marathon - Lake Geneva, WI - Saturday May 12 2012 - John V. Karavitis
I recorded this using two MD80 mini DV cameras clipped to the velcro band of my running cap (one at a time). Each has a maximum record time of about 1.5 hours. You can tell at about timestamp 1 : 14, the video quality changes.
RESULTS:
The weather was cool, but didn't require more than a T-shirt and running shorts - temperature mid-50s Fahrenheit, with always the threat of rain. I decided to run this as it was within driving distance of my home, about a one and a half hour drive each way.
This course is very hilly. VERY hilly. That is the reason why the course record for the full marathon is 2 :33.
The course starts at the marina on the eastern shore of Lake Geneva, WI, heading westward along the southern edge of the lake. The course winds it way through farmland south of the lake, then turns north to end up at The Fontana on the western shore of Lake Geneva.
This is not a large race, but one that has been around for many years. I believe that in 1993 Runner's World magazine named it as the best small marathon in America.
I don't know if I would go that far. But I enjoyed my time there (my first visit to Lake Geneva).
How I ran this race:
I have a Gymboss run/walk interval timer ($20 off of Amazon.com), and I did not want to go through the same experience that I had at the last half-marathon that I ran, the 2011 Peapod Half-Madness Half-Marathon in Batavia, IL (video on my YouTube channel). In that half-marathon, I ran continuously for the first 6 miles or so, then I started to alternate between running and walking. For this half-marathon, I started run/walking from the very beginning. To my surprise, I covered this half-marathon only a couple of minutes more slowly than the Peapod in Batavia.
My total time for this half-marathon is 2 hrs 11 min 46 sec.
While walking, my pace is 16 min/mile. While running, it's just under 8 min/mile. Overall, I covered this half-marathon at a pace of 10 :04 min/mile. My cycle was to walk for 60 seconds, then run for 80 seconds. I felt great after this half-marathon, unlike the Peapod, where I had really bad calf cramps and I felt more beat up after the race. Alternating walking with running, as advocated by Jell Galloway (check out his @Google Talks here on YouTube) is a great way to cover long distances without beating yourself up.
My calculations show that I spent 57 minutes walking, and 75 minutes running. I WALKED 42% OF THIS RACE, and still managed to be only two mintues slower than my prior half-marathon time.
Issues: There should have been more water stations, and the control of the race route was poor to non-existent. You will see in this video that there was also no control as to when runners of the half-marathon would move from the left-hand side of the two-lane road to the right. Cars should have been banned from the race course, they were not. And you know you're in farmland around mile 9 when the smell of manure hits you hard.
At the start of the race, near packet pick-up, there were no porta-potties! We had to use the restrooms in the hotel that held the packet-pickup (where Gino's East pizza is also located) or public restrooms at the marina across the road. Parking was residential, so if you plan of runnning at Lake Geneva in the future, get there early. Also important, if you will be on WI Route 50 heading toward Lake Geneva, please be advised that the speed limit is typically 55 MPH, but changes suddenly and drastically to 35 MPH when going through small towns along the way, and then jumps back up to 55 MPH when you're past them. It drops down to 25 MPH when you enter Lake Geneva proper. BE CAREFUL DRIVING!
At the end of the race runners received a finisher's medal (no race date or year on it - must save on production costs), water, and bagels, muffins, apples, orange slices and the ever-present bananas, on a boat docked at the finish line. Nearby one could pick up a school bus for the ride back to the start line. Once back at the start line, everyone headed back to the packet pickup location for free Gino's East pizza.
