Leo moves to Waterford
In 1816 the old precinct of Halve Maan” (Halfmoon) was divided into two separate towns, Halfmoon and Waterford. The Village of Waterford is located within the town and holds the distinction of being the oldest continually incorporated village in the United States.
The industries of Waterford include Momentive Performance Materials, which is the largest employer in Saratoga County. Mohawk Paper Mill on the historic Kings Canal and Ursula of Switzerland are located in the Northside section of Waterford. Industries on Hudson River Road include Cascades, DeGussa, Golub Warehouses and Maximum Security Products. The New York State DOT and New York State Canal Corporation both operate out of Waterford and the Bureau of Historic Sites has their headquarters on Peebles Island, which is a New York State Park situated in Waterford.
The Town has a full-time Police Department; five volunteer fire departments, a Rescue Squad and an Emergency Team. It is served by two school districts, Waterford-Halfmoon being the primary district, a small portion of the Town is in Shenendehowa School District.
The Town is currently in a state of growth and will continue to grow for some time to come. The many civic groups that make up the Town continue to work for the betterment of the community. This can truly be called a volunteer community.
The town is part of the Van Schaick land patent of 1687. The first settlement took place at the site of the current Waterford village, then called Half Moon Point.[citation needed]
The town was formed in 1816 by splitting the area of southeastern Saratoga County known as Halfmoon (anglicized from the Dutch name Halve Maan) into the town of Halfmoon and the town of Waterford.[citation needed]
The village of Waterford is the oldest incorporated village in the US, having been incorporated in 1794, before the town was formed. Waterford has been host to Canal Fest and Tugboat Roundup celebrations for many years.
The Catawissa (tugboat), Northside Historic District, Ormsby-Laughlin Textile Companies Mill, Peebles (Peobles) Island, Urger (canal tugboat), and Waterford Village Historic District are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.[1]
Waterfront community
Waterford is home to the largest annual tugboat festival in the Northeast US. Every September, a three-day festival is held in Waterford along the waterfront in the village. Recently, 30,000 visitors attended over the 3-day weekend.[citation needed] Arts, crafts, farmer's market items, games, music, story-telling and of course tugboats are on display. Many historic boats travel through the locks in Waterford, as it is the entrance to the modern New York State Barge Canal system.

In this video you we see a nice yacht leaving lock 2 in Waterford NY, the Oldest Continuously Incorporated Village In The United States and heading south on the Hudson River. This area is where the Mohawk meets the Hudson and is a very historical area. Peebles Island (2:38 in) is the home of Bureau of Historic Preservation Field Services.
On August 17, 1777, Americans retreated south to these islands. They prepared defenses to make a final stand against the British who intended to capture Albany. An American victory at Saratoga, however, made it unnecessary to rely upon the island's defenses. The fortifications consisted of three batteries of cannon protected by earth works all connected by entrenchments for troops. Their design has been attributed to Polish engineer, Thaddeus Koscuiszko.
Peebles Island is also the headquarters of the Bureau of Historic Sites and Bureau of Historic Preservation Field Services. The staff provide technical services, such as record maintenance, analysis of artifacts, and preparation of publications, exhibits and audio visual programs for the 35 historic sites maintained by State.

How to Use a Metal Detector to Uncover Hidden Bounty
Watch more How to Have Fun at the Beach videos:
Think buried treasure is only for pirates and archaeologists? Think again.
Step 1: Practice using the detector
Get acquainted with the device by burying metal objects and running the detector over them. If you have a more sophisticated metal detector, take note of the different sounds it makes depending on the object it's detecting.
Step 2: Search the best locations
Search online or at the library for locations like popular recreation sites and areas where historical events occurred to up your chances of uncovering something great.
Tip
If you're searching private property, get the owner's permission. Contact local authorities before searching national parks or monuments.
Step 3: Start detecting
Start in one corner of the area you're searching. Hold the detector in front of you and walk slowly and deliberately in a straight line to the other end of the area, keeping the detector's coils at a consistent distance from the ground and parallel to it. Make a methodical back and forth sweep of the area, like mowing a lawn.
Step 4: Pinpoint your treasure
When you pick up a signal, run the detector over a 2 square foot area around where the signal occurred. Listen for where the signal is loudest and gently drive a probe into the ground until you feel the object.
Tip
Use an electronic probe to save time and effort.
Step 5: Excavate your find
Dig up your find with a spade, being careful not to damage it during excavation. Then, refill the hole and tamp down the dirt. If you think you've found something worth keeping, store it in your backpack. If it's trash, put it in your trash bag for proper disposal later.
Tip
Never clean a find until a specialist has looked at it and given the okay.
Step 6: Get an expert to examine it
Take potentially valuable finds to an antique or coin dealer to assess their worth.
Step 7: Practice
Practice. Stay alert, enjoy your time in the great outdoors, and keep your fingers crossed for the next big find!
