This was our summer vacation trip on the way to Coco Beach International Hotel. While traveling North along the treasure coast this was one of 2 stops we made. The other one being McLarty Treasure Museum in Sebastian, where they found allot of Spanish gold and pieces of 8.
There were many trails each a couple of miles long. We had a lovely nature walk. We saw many types of birds and of course Pelicans.

Pelican Island NWR
The first National Wildlife Refuge in America, Pelican Island was designated by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1903 to protect a brown pelican rookery on an island in the Indian River Lagoon. The Centennial Trail celebrates this accomplishment with a timeline of the NWR system, and provides a perch from which to watch the birds come and go.
Day 34 McLarty Treasure Museum
In 1715 12 ships loaded with Spanish treasure set sail from Cuba to Spain. Their route took them along the Florida coast to St Augustine, then head East. In July 1715 a massive hurricane destroyed 11 ships killing around 1000 men. With rumor of lost treasure the name Treasure Coast was born. 5 ships and billions of dollars in lost treasure still exist off the Florida coast between Cape Canaveral and Jupiter Island.
