Lost cities of the world
Minho, Portugal
Minho is the extreme northwest region in Portugal. There we can find very beautiful places and cities. Braga, its main city, is also known as “Portuguese Rome due to the number of churches and shrines we can find there. Not far away, we can visit Barcelos, the typical Minho town, known for the crafts cock, one of the national symbols. Guimarães is considered Portugal birthplace; it has a beautiful castle and a very old historical center. In the north, in Lima river mouth, is located the pearl of Minho: Viana do Castelo. Besides a visit to the top of Santa Luzia Sanctuary, Viana do Castelo also deserves a journey of a few hours by the centre. Above it, in the river Lima banks, we find Ponte de Lima, a medieval town that surprises whoever visits it. Caminha, a beautiful village in the border area, is located in a place blessed by nature: Minho mouth. In Esposende, where Cávado river flows, we can appreciate the pure nature of Fão Dunes and, a little further down, the two cities Póvoa de Varzim and Vila do Conde, each one with its charms. It is also in this region that we can visit the only national park in Portugal: Peneda-Gerês, not included in this video - a piece dedicated to this park is planned for the next months.

Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
Learning by listening is a great way to:
- increases imagination and understanding
- improves your listening skills
- improves your own spoken accent
- learn while on the move
- reduce eye strain
Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through audio (audio article). You could even learn subconsciously by playing the audio while you are sleeping! One of beautiful city of Portugal. Evora the most historical city of Portugal.
Santa Luzia, Viana do Castelo, Portugal
The Sanctuary of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is a catholic Christian shrine located on the top of Santa Luzia hill, in the city of Viana do Castelo, Portugal.
Assuming itself as the ex libris of the city of Viana do Castelo, from its place you can see a unique view of the region, which reconciles the sea, the Lima river with its valley, and the whole surrounding mountain complex.
The architectural project (1899) is due to the architect Miguel Ventura Terra.
History
The sanctuary dedicated to the worship of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, high on the hill of Santa Luzia, was started in 1904 and completed in 1959, at the initiative of the Brotherhood of Santa Luzia, the entity that oversees the monument.
Its institution is due to the Cavalry Captain Luís de Andrade e Sousa who, affected by a serious ophthalmology, resorts to the extinct chapel of Santa Luzia, lawyer of sight, as a way to gratify the grace received.
Temple-Monument glorifies the name of Santa Luzia, to whom the Cavalry Captain Luís de Andrade e Sousa resorts, in the extinct chapel of Santa Luzia, suffering from a severe ophthalmia. Already convalesced, establishes the Brotherhood of Santa Luzia, as a way to gratify the grace received. Prior to the temple, there was a small medieval hermitage dedicated to Saint Luzia, patron saint of sight, whose attribute is his eyes arranged in a bowl. In the late nineteenth century, who will become the first president of the Brotherhood of Santa Luzia, the Cavalry Captain Luís de Andrade e Sousa, suffering from an ophthalmological problem, begins to frequent the small chapel, praying and asking for a solution to his. problem. When restored to his vision, he instituted the Brotherhood of Santa Luzia in 1884, taking care of the isolated and abandoned chapel and ordering a road linking the city to the hill.
The privileged location called for a building that lived up to it and the panorama that it contemplates, seeking the revaluation of the hill and the ruins of the Citânia de Santa Luzia.
The works begin in 1904, with a project by Ventura Terra and directed by António Adelino de Magalhães Moutinho, a municipal architect. The works were interrupted in 1910 with the Implantation of the Republic and the consequent Law of Separation of the State from the Church, to begin again in 1926, under the direction of Miguel Nogueira. In the same year, the small chapel is demolished and, once the chancel is completed, it was sacred and open for worship, even though the remaining temple was still to be built. This phenomenon is common in other churches, starting work on the most important area of construction - the chancel - and from then on. The exterior works extended until 1943 and the interior works until 1959.
The Sanctuary of Saint Luzia is considered as inspired by the Sacré Cœur Basilica in Paris. However, this idea has been disputed, since, at the time of Ventura Terra's project (1899), the Parisian church was still poorly built and without visible configuration.
The works of granite stonework are the responsibility of master mason, Emídio Pereira Lima, who directed the work after the blindness of Miguel Nogueira.
Since 1923, the sanctuary has been served by the Santa Luzia Lift, also known as the Santa Luzia Funicular, by Bernardo Pinto Abrunhosa, who was also responsible for the refurbishment of the Hotel de Santa Luzia, now part of the Portuguese Pousadas network.
Features
The temple features a Greek cross-shaped plant with elements in neo-romantic, neo-gothic and byzantine style, in an eclectic and revivalist taste that marked the turn of the century. The model was imported from France, learning place of architect Ventura Terra.
In its juniper you can admire a superb 360º view of the region, considered as one of the best in the world.
The stained glass windows of the rosettes were made in Lisbon, at Ricardo Leone's workshop. The rosettes that frame them are the largest in the Iberian Peninsula. The frescoes that represent the Passion and Ascension of Christ at the summit are by Manuel Pereira da Silva. The two cherubs on the high altar are by the sculptor Leopoldo de Almeida, and were executed in Vila Viçosa marble by masters Emídio Lima and Albino Lima. The three altars (the main and the two sides) in magnificently worked granite were carved by Emídio Lima, as well as the two pulpits.
On the main façade of the temple stands a statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, in bronze, by the sculptor Aleixo Queirós Ribeiro, dating from 1898, which is prior to the building itself.
The carillon consists of 26 bells.

CASA BOA VISTA - PONTE DA BARCA - Northern Portugal. REDUCED TO £355,000
The dream site is in the north of Portugal between the ancient towns of Ponte da Barca and Ponte de Lima. The property is on the side of a mountain, overlooking the river Lima valley. It has magnificent views both during the day and at night with all the house and street lights twinkling on the other side of the valley. We actually bought the land while on holiday in the area in 2000. We built or six bedroom villa and completed it in 2008, moved in, sorted out the garden, another 5000 square metres, started doing bed and breakfast for customers at our previous locations, for Bird Watchers, Artists, Walkers and the like plus the occasional golfing parties. Now, you have guessed it, we are beyond retirement age, and it is now too much for us. So, anyone out there interested in a very large six bedroom villa with a very good income potential?.
The property, completed in 2008 is of sound construction and still under a five year warranty, consisting of Entrance Hall with spiral staircase to upper floor of two en-suite bedrooms and a lounge. Off of the entrance hall two steps down to sunken lounge with inglenook fireplace. Passage to two bedrooms and one bathroom. Up two steps to dining room with door to study. Continue to fitted kitchen with laundry and toilet off. Further walk in storage. Passage with fitted book shelves with walk in, shelved larder. Further door to master bedroom with two walk in wardrobes. Door to en-suite containing walk in shower, W.C., matching hand basins and a Jacuzzi bath. Passage continues to marble stairs to 6th bedroom. The property has a large double garage with electric up and over door. Outside, a gravel drive approximately 100 metres to electric front gate. There is a large water tank with a pump house, a wooden tool shed. Gas storage is an integral part of the house with outside access. There are Chestnut, walnut, fig, orange, lemon, olive, pear, plum. Peach. Cherry and mulberry trees. The property has natural spring water so no water bills. Current annual property tax (council tax) is 50 euros. The villa, the property of Sheila & Michael Lake, is situated in the village of Sao Mamede in the parish of Lavradas approximately half way between the towns of Ponte da Barca and Ponte de Lima in the Costa Verde (Green Coast) region of Portugal, north of Oporto and inland from Viana do Castelo. As the regions name suggests, you can expect to find all shades of green in the rolling hills, mountains, forests and fertile valleys. Agriculture makes this the greenest zone in Portugal. The property is approximately 50 minutes from Oporto airport. One hour from Vigo airport and trains run from Viana do Castelo to all of Portugal and connects with the whole of Europe. The ferry port of Santander is about six hours drive away.
The villa is to be sold partly furnished, to include all curtains with fittings, all light fittings, all white goods including washing machine, tumble dryer, dish washer, refrigerator and deep freezer and a Rangemaster model 110 cooker.

Atlantic Coast (Porto)
UNESCO World Heritage Site - is a
specific site that has been nominated for the international World Heritage program administered by UNESCO.
Um local denominado património mundial é reconhecido pela UNESCO (Organização das Nações Unidas para a Educação, a Ciência e a Cultura) como de mundial importância para a preservação dos patrimônios históricos e naturais de diversos países.
Porto (also Oporto; Portugal) is a city in northern Portugal and is the second largest city in Portugal, with a 2005 estimated population of 238,465 in the 15 parishes of Porto municipality, 1.6 million in the 14 Greater Metropolitan Area of Porto municipalities, which is an administrative and political entity, and 2.99 million people in the broader agglomeration of Porto Metropolitan Region.
One of Portugal's most internationally famous products, Port wine, was named after the city because it was originally shipped from the area or, more precisely, from Vila Nova de Gaia, a city just across the river which belongs to the same conurbation. The country was also named after the Latin name of this city, Portus Cale (English: Port of Gaia).
Due to its economic output and market size, Greater Porto area is one of the major financial and economic centers of the northwestern quarter of the Iberian Peninsula. Porto's municipality is the core of a large northern Atlantic conurbation, and Porto district is one of the most industrialized districts of Portugal.
The Oporto Cathedral (Portuguese: Sé do Porto), located in the historical centre of the city of Porto, Portugal, is one of the city's oldest monuments and one of the most important Romanesque monuments in Portugal.
The current Cathedral of Porto underwent construction around 1110 under the patronage of Bishop Hugo and was completed in the 13th century, but there is evidence that the city has been a bishopric seat since the Suevi domination in the 5th-6th centuries.
11 February 1387 (Oporto Cathedral)
Philippa of Lancaster:
Philippa of Lancaster, LG (31 March 1360 Leicester Castle -- July 19, 1415 Odivelas) was an English princess, daughter of John of Gaunt, 1st Duke of Lancaster (a son of Edward III of England and Philippa of Hainault) by his wife and cousin Blanche of Lancaster. Blanche was the daughter of Henry of Grosmont, 1st Duke of Lancaster and Isabel de Beaumont.
Philippa became Queen consort of Portugal by her marriage with king John I, celebrated on 11 February 1387 in the city of Porto. This marriage was the final step in the Anglo-Portuguese alliance, against the France-Castile axis. Philippa is remembered for being a generous and loving queen.
