Pensacola Museum of Art 20190329
About
The University of West Florida's Pensacola Museum of Art presents engaging cross-disciplinary exhibitions, educational programming, and stewards a growing collection of modern and contemporary art of the nineteenth, twentieth, and twenty-first centuries. The museum aims to promote the understanding and appreciation of art and ideas to audiences in the Northwest Florida region and beyond. We endeavor to create dialogue between university and community audiences by engendering experiences of joy, discovery, and creativity through diverse perspectives, and the transdisciplinary interactions of art, culture, the humanities, science, and technology.
HISTORY
As a Jail
In 1906, the City of Pensacola made plans to construct a two-story building to house the City Jail, City Courthouse, Police Department, and Shore Patrol. Built in Spanish Revival Style, it was the first permanent jail in the community. Prior to that there were only small, makeshift facilities to hold prisoners. Building the structure was culturally significant because it was physical evidence of the community’s commitment to public safety and justice. The judge heard cases on assault, public drunkenness, disorderly conduct, selling liquor on Sunday, traffic offenses, lewdness, and other misdemeanors. From 1908 until the 1940’s the jail usually housed 15 to 25 prisoners, three or four being women. The jail served the community for four decades until the needs of a growing population outgrew the 12,000 square foot structure.
As an Art Center
In 1954, members of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) envisioned a venue to exhibit traveling art exhibitions; offer art classes for both children and adults; and to provide meeting space for members of the community as well as a venue for lectures, films and other cultural presentations. Joining with others in the community who shared this vision, they formed the Pensacola Art Association.
When the City of Pensacola replaced the City Jail in 1954, the Pensacola Art Association sought to secure the building. The Spanish Revival structure was well-suited to become an arts center. The jail was already fireproof, secure and centrally located in Pensacola’s historic downtown district. The City agreed to lease the jail for $1 a year and the Art Association’s board members transformed the former jail cells into exhibition spaces. The Art Association (which became the Pensacola Museum of Art in 1982) purchased the building in 1988.
Naval Aviation Museum, Pensacola, FL
While staying at Fort Pickens Campground, we drove into Pensacola to visit the Naval Aviation Museum. A few of my boys love military history, so they were on cloud 9. It's a free museum, and took us several hours to see everything.

Would have taken more video but it was getting to windy to control the quadcopter. GoPro wouldn't connect to the app so I had to control the camera manually.

There is a demonstrated need in the USA for more education and awareness about the American military experience, both for children and adults. The Museum of Military History helps to fill this need by providing interactive exhibits,
workshops, lectures, publications and outreach programs.
The museum's exhibits and displays are dynamic, entertaining, hands-on and interactive, to impart both knowledge and critical thinking skills, while at the same time inspiring a sense of fun and adventure. The Museum of Military History layers its
exhibits and information on a number of different levels. This fosters learning for a diverse audience, including students, experts and amateurs from local, national and global audiences.
The goal is to help people from all walks of life, and with all levels of knowledge, to better understand and evaluate the experience of combat for American veterans. To this end, the Museum of Military History combines aspects of science, history, art and anthropology museums. The result will be an exploration of modern combat and what it was like as an American to serve his or her country in time of war. This will serve as an important center for education and culture in Osceola County.
The core function of the Museum of Military History is to encourage, foster and support education in these fields by making learning tangible, interesting and interactive. The Museum of Military History hopes to inspire our visitors with a desire to learn and think critically, encouraging curiosity.
The Museum of Military History supports this desire by filling a void in today's learning resources; it will use resources that are not readily available from other sources.
The Museum of Military History provides interactive exhibits, games and displays from which people of all ages and backgrounds can learn about the individual soldier's experience.

US Navy Blue Angels - Pensacola Beach, Florida - May 2017
US Navy Blue Angels - Pensacola Beach, FL - May 2017
The Navy's Blue Angels call Pensacola Naval Air Station home. Locals are accustomed to seeing the team of distinctive blue and gold F/A-18 Hornets flying in tight formations over the city and over the water during routine practices from March to November every year.
I had an opportunity to see a practice/training show while vacationing in Pensacola Beach, May 2017. It was quite an experience! Enjoy!
The team is stationed at Forrest Sherman Field, Naval Air Station Pensacola, Florida, during the air show season. The squadron spends January through March training at Naval Air Facility El Centro, California.
Around the country, the team serves as ambassadors of goodwill by bringing naval aviation to men, women, and children across America.
The precision flight demonstrations showcase the professionalism, excellence and teamwork found in all Navy and Marine Corps units, as well as provide the thrill and magic of flight to people each year.
Since its inception, the team has flown for more than 450 million spectators worldwide.
One of the most rewarding aspects of being a Blue Angel is the opportunity to spend time visiting hospitals, schools, and community functions in each air show city.
At schools across the country, the team takes time to interact with students and discuss the benefits of military service and the excitement of naval aviation across the country, hoping to inspire others to pursue their own dreams.
The hope is that tomorrow's leaders will be encouraged and motivated by what they see in the performance, and all the men and women that make up the Blue Angels.

First Friday by the Bay - Things to do in Palm Bay
First Friday By The Bay -
A Monthly Family Festival with Live Music, Food, and More is here! Finally, right here in Palm Bay, we will host a festival for the whole family. Look forward each month to live music from top name bands, food of all types, activities for the kids, all right by the Bay.
FREE to attend, the location will be at the corner of US1 and Palm Bay Road at the Palm Bay Chamber of Commerce located at 4100 Dixie Highway NE, Palm Bay, FL 32905.
The Florida city of Palm Bay is located in Brevard County, on the east Central Florida coast. The city is situated just 10 miles southwest of Melbourne, about 65 miles southeast of Orlando, and 180 miles north of Miami. Major highways near the city include Interstate I-95 and U.S. Route 192.
Palm Bay's modern history traces back to 1959, when the Mackle brothers from Miami purchased land for a local residential project. Although the project had its stops and starts, it spurred the growth of industry and population in the area, leading to the incorporation of the city of Palm Bay in 1960.
The city's first major industrial corporation, Radiation, Inc., later evolved into the Harris Corporation. Other industry soon followed, and the 1970's saw construction and expansion in the city. Palm Bay experienced enormous growth in the ensuing two decades, including the completion of a new municipal complex housing the city hall and police station. The city today continues to grow largely due to its proximity to the ocean and to other major areas of central and coastal Florida.
Things to See and Do in the Palm Bay Area
Palm Bay and the Brevard County area offer a choice of many sites for recreation, entertainment, and culture. The Wildlife Turkey Creek Sanctuary is home to many rare and endangered plants and animals. The Florida Tech Botanical Garden offers a 30-acre landscape of picturesque palms in numerous varieties. Anglers can find plenty of fishing at the Sebastian Inlet State Park, 20 minutes south of Palm Bay, where sport fishing can be done from private boats or on one of numerous charter fleets.
A lively arts community thrives in Brevard County, home to an abundance of talented artists, musicians and actors. The Maxwell C. King Center for the Performing Arts plays host to a variety of performing arts, including Broadway musicals, symphonies, opera, jazz, ballet, and comedy. Other area theatres include the Phoenix Theatre and the Melbourne Civic Theatre.
The Brevard Museum of Art & Science offers interactive children's exhibits as well as art classes throughout the year. Also located in the Brevard County area are the Margaret Homes Nature Center, the Titusville Historic Museum, the Brevard Museum of History and Natural Science, and the Air Force Space Museum. Fifty miles to the north is the Kennedy Space Center and Astronaut Hall of Fame, and 65 miles to the northwest is the city of Orlando, home to world class attractions such as Disney World, Universal Studios, and Sea World.
