The Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary is a wildlife sanctuary near Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, India. It consists of the catchment area of the Karamana river, which originates from Chemmunjimottai, the tallest hill within the sanctuary. The sanctuary is named after the Peppara dam, commissioned in 1983 to augment the drinking water supply to Thiruvananthapuram city and suburban areas. Considering the ecological significance of the area, it was declared a sanctuary in 1983. The terrain is undulating with elevation ranging from 100 m to 1717 m. The area of the sanctuary is 75 km2 with tropical moist evergreen forests and myristica swamps.[1] Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary is 44 kilometres (27 mi) by car from the nearest railway station, at Thiruvananthapuram, and 49 kilometres (30 mi) from the Thiruvananthapuram airport

Peppara wildlife sanctuary is a fascinating tourist spot situated in the outskirts of Thiruvananthapuram.
Named after the Peppara dam, the wildlife sanctuary is spread across an area of 75 sq. kms, and is covered with evergreen forests, freshwater swamps, hills and valleys.
The thick forest of Peppara houses a rich variety of animals including elephants, sambar deer and lion tailed macaque.
Many endemic bird species like Malabar Grey Hornbill, White-bellied Treepie, and Small Sunbird have also found a home here.
With the rich flora and fauna, and the rocky terrain, Peppara is truly a haven for the nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts.

Vazhvanthol waterfalls - The mesmerizing waterfalls located inside the Peppara Wild Life Sanctuary of Thiruvananthapuram District. Entry restricted with pass allotted from Kannithadam Forest Section Office from 9am to 1pm. Trekkers need to pay an amount of
Rs.1,500/- for a team up to 10 persons. For the same you shall be allotted a guide who will accompany you updown throughout this 5 km long walk.

Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary, Thiruvananthapuram
Lying on the outskirts of the capital city, the Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary is spread over an area of 53 sq. km. on the Western Ghats and was established in 1938. The place is fascinating for its damsite, thick forest areas, crystal clear streams and rocky terrains ideal for adventure expeditions.
The sanctuary has a rich population of mammalian fauna and is emerging as a big attraction to wildlife enthusiasts and ornithologists. Asian elephant, sambar, leopard, lion-tailed macaque, can be seen here. Birdlife includes the endemics like Malabar Grey Hornbill, Whitebellied Treepie, Small Sunbird, etc.
Recently, a joint effort has been made by Kerala Tourism with the State Forest Department and the Kerala Water Authority to beautify the damsite and provide more entertainment/leisure facilities here.

The Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary is situated on Thiruvananthapuram-Ponmudi Road, about 50 km northeast of Thiruvananthapuram.
The area is hilly, with elevation varying from 100 metres (330 ft) to 1,717 metres (5,633 ft). The major peaks in the sanctuary are Chemmunjimottai (1717m), Athirumalai (1594m), Arumukhamkunnu (1457m), Koviltherimalai (1313m) and Nachiyadikunnu (957m). Annual average rainfall is 2,500 millimetres (98 in). The major rivers are Karamana River and its tributaries.

Chittipara is an amazing view point near Vithura, Thiruvananthapuram. If season and weather is favourable, you will get splendid view of clouds floating around, sun rising from the horizon. It can be rightly called as Trivandrum's Meesapulimala. Last 1 KM concrete road is bit narrow and steep. Vehicles need to be parked by the side of the road. If overcrowded, it will be a mess. After parking need to walk 20 mins to reach the top. Rock edges are dangerously steep, there is no safety railings, sign boards and security person, so be careful.
Location:
View point is near 'Ayiravalli Thampuram Temple Chittipara', so follow the directions to temple. After reaching temple, take left path and continue towards the top of rocks.
