പെരളശ്ശേരി ശ്രീ സുബ്രഹ്മണ്യ ക്ഷേത്രം, PERALASSERY SUBRAHMANYA TEMPLE
DHANYAM CREATIONS
Peralassery Subramania Temple along with Payyanur Subramania temple is probably the most important and must visit Subramania Temples in Kerala. The story or “Aithihyam” behind this temple is unique and has it’s roots in the Ramayana epic.It is believed that the Subramania Peralassery Temple is a place where Lord Sri Rama along with Lakshmana halted on their way to Sri Lanka, in their search and endeavour to rescue Sita Devi from Ravana’s imprisonment. The Peralassery Subramanya Temple, is located 15 kms from Kannur. It is also believed that people who visit Peralaserry temple must also visit the nearby Makrery temple. The main “vazhipaddu” or offerings in this temple are “Subramania Puja” and “Mutta Oppikal” (offering of eggs to the revered snake deity). The main deity of this temple is Lord Subramania.
The Stepped Pool/Tank or “Chira” of the Peralassery Subramania temple is a magnificent structure. The week long Kodiyettam festival associated with the Peralassery Subramanya temple is in the Month of December, every year. The annual festival of the temple is celebrated for eight days. Kathakali, Chakyarkoothu, Ottanthullal, Parayan Thullal and Seethankan Thullal are the main art-forms performed during the festival. Another important concert during the festival is a highly religious dance, ' Thidampunritham' performed by the priest. Peralaserry Subramania Temple along with Payyanur Subramania temple is probably the most important and must visit Subramania Temples in Kerala. Once Lord Subramanya asked Lord Brahma Deva the meaning of 'Ohm'.The meaning and its explanation given by Brahma Deva was not felt satisfactory for Lord Subramanya. He captured him and put him in a cell in custody.Lord Shiva when
understood about this horrible mistake of his son he released Brahma Deva and explained to Subramanya that his deed in that regard was a great sin. For that sin Subramanyaswamy had to take the form of a serpent and had to live in an isolated well.To protect him from Sun and rain other serpents stood over the well with raised hoods. The place where the serpents protected Subramanya is Peralassery according to the legends. In the 'Thretha Yuga' when Sri Rama reached here in search of Sita Devi he reached this place. There was a temple at this place known as 'Ayyappan Kavu' and presiding deity was Lord Ayyappa.Sri Rama recognized presence of Subramanya there. He told Hanuman Swamy to bring an idol from the Himalayas.Hanuman did not reach in time of the auspicious moment to consecrate the idol and so Sri Rama consecrated his bangle instead of the idol. The bangle is called as 'Vala' in Malayalam and the bangle of the prince was called as 'peruvala'.Thus the place name was derived as 'Peruvalassery' which got transformed as 'Peralassery'.When Hanuman Swamy reached with the idol it was also consecrated there by Hanuman Swamy himself. After the consecration, for performing the 'unction' Hanuman Swamy created a pond by hitting on the ground by his tail with great force.Kathakali,Chakyarkoothu,Ottanthullal,Parayanthullal etc will be held as part of the festivities and also a religious feature known as 'Thidambu Nritham' which is performed by the temple priest.
Large number of devotees visit Peralassery temple to get rid of 'Sarpa Kopam'(the bad effects of Serpent curses).
Devotees of all faiths are allowed to enter this temple for worship.
Temple Chira (Stepped pond ) positioned just outside the temple is a structure of impressive scale. It is the biggest among all ponds present in Kerala.

Sri Perlassery Subramanya Swamy Temple
Peralassery Subrahmanya Temple is one of the beautiful holy shrines of Kannur district, situated around 16 kms from Kannur city on the Kannur-Kuthuparamba road. An ancient temple, it is popularly believed that this place of worship was built by Lord Rama himself. The presiding deity of the temple is Lord Subrahmanya. This temple is also well – known for its stepped temple pond that has countless steps laid in unique and intricate geometrical proportions.
The story of this temple is connected to the epic Ramayana. It is believed that During Lord Ramas Vanavasam (the 14-year-long exile in forests), Lord Rama along with his brother Lakshmana and Hanuman, reach the south in search of his wife Sita, who was abducted by Ravana. And during their journey, they reach Peralassery where Lord Rama felt the presence of Lord Subrahmanya there. Lord Ram wanted to install an idol of Subrahmanya. But Hanuman, for some reasons, fails to turn up in time with the idol for the consecration. Upset by the delay, Sri Ram is said to have removed his bangle and placed it on the pedestal where the idol was supposed to have been placed. When Hanuman arrives with the idol, Sri Rama places it on top of the bangle he had already consecrated. Seeing this, Hanuman suggests that the bangle may be removed before placing the idol. Lord Rama tells him that it would be impossible to remove the bangle as it has already been placed there. Hanuman, who was very sure of his physical strength, tries to remove the bangle, but he couldn't move the bangle an inch. Instead, a snake came out from the bottom of the bangle and signals him not to do so. After that, the snake returns back quietly. Following this, Sri Ram places the idol on top of the bangle. Thus, the place where a huge bangle is placed came to be known as Peruvalasserry, and with the passage of time it became Peralassery.
It is also believed that before Lord Sri Ram consecrated the Subrahmanya idol in the temple in Tretha Yuga, this was an Ayyappa temple. Now there are two temples in the same compound, one for Ayyappa, and another for Subrahmanya. The other deities in the temple include Ganapati, Naga, and Bhagavathi.
The Naga deity attracts devotees in large numbers who come to this temple to get rid of Naga Kopam or Dosham. Every month, on Ayilyam day, as per the local Malayalam calendar, this temple bustles with ardent devotees who come to make offerings to snake gods.
The main offerings made in this temple are that of Subrahmanya Pooja and Mutta Oppikkal which is the offering of eggs to the snake.
An important annual attraction is the eight day Kodiyettam festival that is celebrated in the month of December. Thousands of devotees from all across Kerala and also from neighbouring states visit this temple during this festival season.. A dip or wash in the impressive Chira or Pond followed by a visit to this temple leaves a soothing impact on the devotees.

Peralassery Sri Subrahmanya Temple || Kodiyettam Festival
The Malayalam month of Dhanu is the festival season here,The six-day long festival starts on 4th of Dhanu and ends on 11th of the month.
The Peralassery Sri Subrahmanya Temple, located around 16 kms south of Kannur city on the Kannur - Koothuparamba road is an ancient temple dedicated to Lord Subrahmanya. It is popularly believed that this place of worship was built by Lord Rama himself.
Peralassery temple is connected to the epic Ramayana. During his Vanavasam (14 year long exile into forests), the story goes, Lord Sri Ram, along with his brother Lakshmana and Hanuman, embarked on a strenuous journey to the south in search of his wife Sita. And during his journey they reached Peralassery and he felt the presence of Lord Subrahmanya there. Lord Ram wanted to install an idol of Subrahmanya there. He entrusted Hanuman to bring the idol of Subramanya for that. But Hanuman, for some reasons, failed to turn up in time for the consecration. Upset by the delay, Sri Ram, removed his bangle and placed it on the pedestal where the idol was supposed to have been placed.
When Hanuman arrived with the stone idol, Srirama tried to place it on top of the bangle he had already consecrated. Seeing this, Hauman suggested that the bangle may be removed before placing the idol. Lord Rama told him that it would be impossible to remove the bangle as it had already been placed there. Hanuman, who was very sure of his physical strength, tried to remove the bangle. But he couldnt move the bangle an inch and instead, a snake came out from the bottom of the bangle and signaled him not to do so. After that, the snake returned quietly. Following this, Sri Ram placed the idol on top of the bangle. Thus, the place where a huge bangle is placed came to be known as Peruvalasserry, and with the passage of time it became Peralasseri (Peru is huge and Vala means bangle in Malayalam).
The temple pond has countless steps laid in unique way, the architecture style have closest resemblance to the stepwells of North India & karnataka. Here the steps are made of laterite stones. It is believed that the water from River Kavery reaches the pond on every Thula Sankramam.
