A Walk Around The Pergamon Museum, Berlin
The Pergamon Museum (German: Pergamonmuseum) is situated on the Museum Island in Berlin. The site was designed by Alfred Messel and Ludwig Hoffmann and was constructed in twenty years, from 1910 to 1930. The Pergamon Museum houses original-sized, reconstructed monumental buildings such as the Pergamon Altar and the Market Gate of Miletus, all consisting of parts transported from Turkey.
The museum is subdivided into the antiquity collection, the Middle East museum, and the museum of Islamic art. The museum is visited by approximately 1,135,000 people every year, making it the most visited art museum in Germany

The Pergamon Museum is part of the museum ensemble on the Museum Island in Berlin. Original initiator of this unique art collection was King Frederick William III of Prussia. In 1810, he issued the instruction to create a public art collection here.
However, this museum scene gained in importance by Wilhelm of Bode under Emperor Wilhelm II, when Bode 1890 became a president of the Royal Museums in Berlin. Bode excellently understood to gather and coordinate private collectors and patrons so that an influential art scene emerged in Berlin. By his activity, the Berlin museums became one of the most important museum complexes worldwide.
Today you can visit the Old and New Museum, the Pergamon Museum, the Old National Gallery and the Bode Museum on the island.
From 2017, the James Simon Gallery will be added. It will serve at the same time as central entrance building of the Museum Island.
In the Pergamon Museum architecture and Greek and Roman sculptures are exhibited. Furthermore it contains the Near Eastern museum with 6000 years history, art and culture and the Museum for Islamic Art from the 8th to 19th century.
Unfortunately we could not see the best known exhibit, the Pergamon Altar. It is not accessible due to renovation work until 2019. In turn this is a reason to visit the museum after 2019.
However, we were compensated by the Ishtar Gate with its Processional Way, the Market Gate of Miletus and the Mshatta facade, and many other sculptures, jewelry, carpets, vases and chests, as well as a myriad of decorative items and wall decorations.
The Ishtar Gate has been built up a little smaller than the original in Babylon, but the original size would have blown up all dimensions in Berlin. Anyway the sight is so indescribable.
The Market Gate of Miletus can be seen in a displayed model of the cityscape of Miletus, so that you get a good idea of its former surroundings.

Das Pergamonmuseum gehört zum Museumsensemble auf der Museumsinsel in Berlin. Ursprünglicher Initiator dieser einzigartigen Kunstsammlung war König Friedrich Wilhelm III., der 1810 die Anweisung erließ, hier eine öffentliche Kunstsammlung anzulegen.
An Bedeutung gewann diese Museumslandschaft aber erst durch Wilhelm von Bode unter Kaiser Wilhelm II, als Bode 1890 Generaldirektor der Königlichen Museen zu Berlin wurde, an Bedeutung. Bode verstand es vortrefflich private Sammler und Mäzene um sich zu versammeln und zu koordinieren, so dass in Berlin eine einflussreiche Kunstszene entstand. Durch seine Tätigkeit wurden die Berliner Museen zu einem der bedeutendsten Museumskomplexe weltweit.
Hier befinden sich heute das Alte und Neue Museum, das Pergamonmuseum, die Alte Nationalgalerie und das Bode Museum.
Ab 2017 soll die James-Simon-Galerie hinzukommen und dann gleichzeitig zentrales Eingangsgebäude der Museumsinsel sein.
Im Pergamonmuseum sind Architektur und griechische und römische Skulpturen ausgestellt. Ferner beinhaltet es das Vorderasiatische Museum mit 6000 Jahren Geschichte, Kunst und Kultur und das Museum für islamische Kunst vom 8. bis 19. Jahrhundert.
Das bekannteste Ausstellungsstück, den Pergamonaltar konnten wir leider nicht sehen, da er wegen Umbaumaßnahmen bis 2019 nicht zugänglich ist. Das wiederum ist ein Grund das Museum nach 2019 nochmals zu besuchen.
Wir wurden aber entschädigt durch das Ischtar-Tor mit seiner Prozessionsstraße, das Markttor von Milet und die Mschatta-Fassade, sowie vielen weiteren Skulpturen, Schmuck, Teppichen, Vasen und Truhen, sowie einer Unzahl an Dekorgegenständen und Wandverzierungen.
Das Ischtar-Tor ist zwar etwas verkleinert aufgebaut worden als das Original in Babylon, doch die Größe des Original hätte in Berlin alle Dimensionen gesprengt. Der Anblick jedenfalls ist auch so unbeschreiblich.
Das Markttor von Milet ist auch im Model vom Stadtbild des damaligen Milet zu sehen, so dass man eine gute Vorstellung von seiner damaligen Umgebung erhält.

Первое здание Пергамского музея было построено еще в далеких 1897-1898 гг. А к 1901 году в музей вошли первые посетители. В этот период существования музея в его экспозиции были различные интересные архитектурные находки из Пергама и Приены (именно поэтому музеи и получил свое название).
Пергамский музей каждый год посещают около миллиона людей, что делает его самым посещаемым музеем Берлина. На территории музея можно встретить кого угодно, включая нынешних российских и зарубежных звезд. Тут бывали Борис Гребенщиков, Карл Лагерфельд, Виктор Янукович, Том Хэнкс, и это далеко еще не полный список.
Античное собрание, Переднеазиатский музей и Музей исламского искусства - вот три основные экспозиции Пергамского музея в Берлине.
Первоначальное здание музея строилось ради известнейшего экспоната - Большой алтарь Зевса. Данный экспонат был обнаружен Карлом Хуманом, когда он приехал в Турцию строить дороги и мосты. Но истинной причиной посещения это страны были раскопки Пергамского царства, где и был найден алтарь. Турков, на тот момент, мало интересовала ценность алтаря, поэтому вскоре он оказался в Германии. Алтарь изображает битву богов и титанов, и посвящен Зевсу и Афине.
Не меньшей популярностью в Пергамском музее пользуются Ассирийские рельефы. На них изображены различные мифические существа, животные, воинские процессии. В западно-азиатском зале можно наблюдать главные ворота Вавилона, посвященные богине Иштар.
Перемещаемся на второй этаж Пергамского музея, где находится исламская экспозиция. Эпицентром здесь является фриз, украшавший фасад замка Омейядов. Он очень огромный и красивый. На нем можно увидеть интересные фигурки животных и узоры растений, которые были вырезаны древним камнерезами. Нужно сказать, что фриз был полностью разрушен. Работники музея по крупицам восстановили его, и теперь каждый может увидеть его в Пергамском музее.
Также в исламской экспозиции (она была открыта в 1904 году) можно увидеть уникальнейшую коллекцию ковров, которую подарил музею Вильгельма фон Боде (известный берлинский историк).
Другое, не менее известное название музея, - Пергамон.

The Pergamon Museum in Berlin
Tour of Pergamon Museum in Berlin.
The Pergamon museum was build between 1910 and 1930. It is located on Museum Island in Berlin along the Spree River, and Mitte district. It is the most visited art museum in Germany.
The museum holds collection of classical antiquities, Middle East and Islamic art. It most famous for the reconstructions of the Pergamon Altar, Market Gate of Miletus, Mshatta Facade, Ishtar Gate and the Processional Way of Babylon.
The classical antiquities holds the reconstruction of the Pergamon Altar from the Hellenistic period. It was built in the 2nd century BC. It is actually not a temple, but an altar of a temple. It has a frieze displayed depicting the battle between the Gods and the Titans.
The Market Gate of Miletus is a Roman architecture.
The Ancient near East collection has the blue glazed-brick Ishtar Gate of Babylon. Built in the 6th century B.C. it is decorated with dragons, lions, and bulls, symbolizing the major gods of Babylon. It leads to the Processional way, and you can marvel at the size. Keep in mind that walls have been scaled down to fit in the museum.
Upstairs in the Islamic Art you will find carpets, ceramics, and the 17th century Aleppo Zimmer. Which is a colored panel form a merchants house with Arabian and Persian verses.
The Mshatta Facade is an unfinished early Islamic desert palace from Jordan built during the 8th century.
Give yourself 3 hours to explore the museum thoroughly. If you plan on visiting at least 3 museums in Germany you may want to invest in a 3 day pass or an annual pass.

Pergamon Museum, Berlin
After seeing the Nues, I walked over to the Pergamon just a stone's throw away. The line was very long and I waited over an hour to get in. Well worth it though.
If you buy individual tickets for each museum they are 12Euros/per museum.
If you spend 18euros you can get all the museums in the museum quarter for one ticket. Suggested to do that.
This museum features lots and lots of Assyrian things and even an Islamic culture exhibit on the second floor.
