Perkins Memorial Tower and Drive: Can You See Manhattan From Here?
Perkins Memorial Tower and Drive: Can You See Manhattan From Here?
Beautiful Views from Perkins Memorial Tower and Drive
Along the path of the Appalachian Trail (all of those stairs!) near Stony Point, at Bear Mountain State Park is the Perkins Memorial Tower and scenic Perkins Memorial Drive, which is open from April to late November, weather permitting. With a ton of gorgeous views, many areas are along the path of the Appalachian Trail, and at the top of the mountain, there is a handicapped accessible section showing a majestic viewpoint. This is a great tranquil place to bring a picnic lunch (and make sure you take out what you bring in), for the whole family or group offering spectacular views of the Hudson Valley.
While The Tower itself was closed when I went, I spent most of my time on the scenic Perkins Memorial Drive, which offered not only the beautiful timelapse in this episode but also a faint view of Manhattan on the day I went. The Bear Mountain Bridge Overlook showcases the Bear Mountain Inn and Overlook Lodge, Hessian Lake, many of the trails at Bear Mountain State Park, Trailside Zoo and Iona Island including the Iona Island Component Hudson River National Estuarine Research Reserve.
Perkins Memorial Tower:
Perkins Memorial Tower is a 40-foot structure providing a view of up to 4 states and the Manhattan skyline, looking down over the Hudson River 1,305 feet above and the views are spectacular! The tower itself was built in 1934 in memory of George Wallbridge Perkins, the founder and first president of the Palisades Interstate Park Commission.
Perkins Memorial Drive:
With views that were pretty amazing, and really not knowing how accessible they were I was so happy I needed to write this blog and episode to share it with you. Seeing from Manhattan to West Point opened up the fact that this little slice of travel knowledge that I'm sharing, could take you a few hours to enjoy!
Perkins Memorial Tower and Drive are only a couple of the many things that can attract you to the Bear Mountain State Park area; I’ll be sure to share more in the coming episodes!

Purple Heart Memorial Bridge - Bear Mountain Bridge
The Bear Mountain Bridge, ceremonially named the Purple Heart Veterans Memorial Bridge, is a toll suspension bridge in New York State. It carries US 6/US 202 across the Hudson River between Rockland/Orange Counties and Westchester/Putnam Counties.
The bridge was opened to the Public on November 27, 1924 and acquired by NYSBA September 26, 1940. The original construction cost was $2,900,000. In 2019 that would be $42,114,202.31.
The Overall Length of the bridge is 2,255 feet with the height reaching 361 feet. The roadway expands 155 feet over the Hudson River.
As the oldest of NYSBA’s bridges, Bear Mountain Bridge was the first vehicular river crossing between New York City and Albany. At the time it was built, it was also the longest suspension bridge in the world and the first suspended bridge to have a concrete deck.
The project of building the Bear Mountain Bridge marked the beginning of a golden age of long span bridge building along the Hudson River and throughout the New York metropolitan area. The success of the inventive methods used broke new ground and paved the way for the building of other suspension bridges such as the George Washington and the Golden Gate.

Bear Mountain Inn
Bear Mountain Inn, part of Bear Mountain and Harriman State Park, has had a much-needed renovation, and re-opened in 2013.
It's nice inside -- not overly exquisite, but serviceable, clean, friendly.

September 27, 1909: N.Y. Governor Charles Evans Hughes with George Perkins at the dedication of the Palisades Interstate Park at Alpine Boat Basin.
Now a public garden and cultural center, Wave Hill, with its sweeping views of the Palisades, was a summer home to the family of future United States President Theodore Roosevelt and later to author Mark Twain.
In 1900, when he was governor of New York, Roosevelt signed legislation that permitted his state to join with New Jersey to form the Palisades Interstate Park Commission-preserving the world famous view he came to know as a boy.
In 1903, George W. Perkins made his home at Wave Hill, Perkins was a leader in the fight to preserve the Palisades and served as president of the Palisades Interstate Park Commission until his death in 1920. Perkins Memorial Tower at Bear Mountain was named for him.
On the river near this spot in September 1609, the Dutch sailing vessel Half Moon met and traded with native tribes. Though they never found the Northwest Passage to the Pacific that they were looking for, the crew brought home reports of a rich and fertile river valley-populated by tribes willing to trade valuable furs for European goods. The river was later named for the ship's captain, Henry Hudson.
