The MESSAGE STICK (Peter Hind) .. Concert Band Perth Concert Hall
The Message Stick tells the story of Australia's Stolen Generations. Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander children removed from their families. Recorded at The Perth Concert Hall by Kalamunda Senior High School Concert Band.
The narrative begins with a quote from the “Bringing Them Home Report” followed by the declaration of the Aborigines Act of 1905.
Some parts of the narration quoted from the original 1905 legislation and newspapers of the time contain descriptions of Indigenous Australians that we no longer condone as appropriate. They have been retained in the narration to preserve the authenticity of the quote and as a reminder of the prevailing context of the era.
The melody is then taken on a time travel ride. It rides on a merry go round from the early 1900s, marches with a WW1 army and dances to swing tunes from the 30s, 40s and 50s before a purposeful anthem propels the narrative through the 60s and 70s The words - ‘CHILDREN WERE TAKEN’ - are narrated in a bar of silence at each stage to illustrate the continuation of a policy that persisted despite the progress in other aspects of Australian society.
The work ends with the whole band playing in unison and represents the hope of the entire nation moving forward together, into a new, brighter chapter in Australia’s history.
The main theme consists of 5 notes from the F Harmonic Minor Scale: the 1st, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 7th.
The FIRST note of the scale – often referred to as THE ROOT NOTE represents the Stolen Generation policy as the root cause of so much on going pain.
The MINOR THIRD is the note that gives all music in a minor key a “sad feel” representing, sorrow despair and despondency.
The use of the 4th (SUB DOMINANT), and 5th (DOMINANT) notes represents the oppression of one group of people over another.
The 7th note of a harmonic minor scale is always written with an accidental that is not found in the key signature. It has to carry this distinctive symbol wherever it goes.
The 7th note does not conform to the rest of the scale and represents the labelling of mixed race children by the authorities as a problem that needed to conform to the rest of society.
