Sacred valley is the city of Ollantaytambo and around, and is 2 hours from Cusco, Peru. It has some beautiful hikes to explore the incan history and is set in the Andes Valley along the Urubamba river. We spent a day exploring the ruins and the long lost incan cities here and roaming about the alleys of Ollantaytambo. Then we took the Perurail train to Aguas Calientes which is at the base of Machu Picchu. Have to say it is one of the most scenic rides I have ever done.

Hiking Above the Sacred Valley (Peru)
A two-hour hike brought us to a vantage point on the southern flank of the Sacred Valley, from where we gazed across at the snowcapped peaks of the Urubamba mountain range. Crenellated glaciers descended from the 19,394-foot Veronica, their huge seracs and crevasses looking at this distance like ridges and troughs on a colossal sheet of crumpled paper... –Andrew Harper

PeruRail - Narrow-gauge trains in the Sacred Valley
A quick compilation of PeruRail trains plying the 3' gauge rails of the Ferrocarril Santa Ana, which starts in Cusco, ascends a series of switchbacks to climb out of the basin in which the city lies and descends into the valley of the Urubamba river to an endpoint near a large hydroelectric dam, approximately 120 kilometers from its starting point. It once extended through to the city of Quillabamba, but severe flooding has since closed that section.
The company operates very frequent, well-patronized passenger services on the line, as the railroad is the only practical link for tourists going from Cusco to the Machu Picchu site. Trains typically leave from Poroy, outside Cusco (thus bypassing the switchbacks, locally known as el zig-zag) or from Ollantaytambo and terminate in Aguas Calientes, a small town that is the main lead-off point for people visiting Machu Picchu. Trains serving the local population continue on to the line's endpoint at Hidroelectrica. Alco and MLW diesels power the lion's share of the trains, with a few services provided by DMUs.
In the first scene, train 501 approaches a switchback leading down to Hidroelectrica station. A heavily-used hiking trail uses the railroad right-of-way between Hidroelectrica and Aguas Calientes, a distance of about 11 kilometers. This is close to the location of the infamous viral video from a few months back, where a fellow Canadian hiker stood too close to a passing train and got a crewmember's boot to the side of the head.
In the next scene, train 504 (the return of 501) powers its way through the valley.
Finally, train 22, the all-stops, no-foreigners Hidroelectrica - Ollantaytambo local, pulls through the town center to align the switch leading to Aguas Caliente's stub-end station.

The Sacred Valley, Heartland of the Inca Empire - Part 1 (English - Full HD)
The Sacred Valley of the Incas is located in the Peruvian Andes. It is composed by numerous rivers which descend through various canyons and valleys, and also it has numerous archaeological monuments and indigenous peoples.
This first part shows the grandeur of the ruins and towns closest to Cusco in the Sacred Valley, as Tambomachay, Puca Pucara, Q'enqo and Sacsayhuaman which is considered one of the most impressive of all constructions made by the Incas during their heyday.
This valley was appreciated by the Incas due to its special geographical and climatic qualities. It had one of the main production for the wealth of their land and place where it produces the best maize in Peru.
In the Sacred Valley the Incas settle and spread beautiful colonial towns that were created, and today shows its mix of architecture, art and alive culture. There are the towns of Chinchero and its weavers and craft fair Pisac, Urubamba and its cosmopolitanism, Ollantaytambo, with its strength and Inca people live. And with its stunning Moray Salinaras in these territories, the Sacred Valley, several communities have created products of rural tourism and experiential tourism astounding and strangers. Each one of the places is unique in itself, and together, make up an unprecedented form of knowing the traditional region of the South American Andes.
The Sacred Valley is between the towns of Pisac and Ollantaytambo, parallel to the river Vilcanota. You can access it from the city of Cusco.

Peru Rafting Urubamba 1 & 2 Days Option
The Urubamba river runs from the high Andean ranges down through the Sacred Valley of the Incas, past Machupicchu and into the jungle. It has some exciting white water depending on the section of the river being done and the time of the year. One of our most popular Rafting sections during the season is the Chuquicahuana “Chuqui” class IIl sections on the Upper Urubamba river. There are good class III rapids and the water is not contaminated.
This section of the river is more intense with adrenaline pumping rapids Class III & III+ on the Chuqui section of the river we will include a safety Cataraft or Kayak.

Visitors of Machu Picchu often overlook the cute and charming historic villages in Sacred Valley. This vlog is about my visits to these villages.
I decided to spend my first night in a small village named Ollantaytambo because it would help reduce the high altitude sickness (compared to Cuzco, which is at a much higher elevation) and it's much more affordable in terms of lodging than Cuzco (Cusco). There are plenty of decent accommodations in Ollantaytambo. Also, catching a train to Agua Caliente (a town at the base of Machu Picchu) would be less expensive from here. This is particularly true if you use colectivo to travel from Cuzco to Ollantaytambo.
** CORRECTIONS to typos in the video: 1- Collectivo should be Colectivo.
2- Capella Lodge should be Capilla Lodge
Colectivo is a shared taxi that costs a fraction of regular taxi fare, especially for long distance. This is how the locals travel. There's no set schedule for departure. The colectivo would depart when the number of passengers reaches to a go-point (usually means when the vehicle reaches its capacity). The station for Cusco-Ollantaytambo is located at the corner of Calle Pavitos and Av Grau.
More travel tips...
1. If you want to save some money and know what you're doing, catch a taxi parked outside of the airport's parking lot, instead of ones that park along the curb right outside of the arrival gate.
2. Almost all hotels offer free cocoa tea (in dried leaves form). Take advantage of it. It may help your body to cope with the high altitude sickness. But remember not to overdo it because the high dose of this stuff is considered as 'narcotic' in the US, and thus, is illegal. So, don't even bother packing kilos of them home unless you want to get to know the DEA up close and personal.
3. Most motorcarros in Peru do not have smog control. That means air pollution can be a problem if you are sensitive to exhaust fumes. Pack a breathing mask (like ones used for bike riding) if you're uncomfortable to exhaust fumes.
4. Ollantaytambo's power often goes down when it rains in the evening for a short duration (about 20 minutes or so). Carrying a flashlight (one on your smart phone would do) could save you some hassles. During the power failure, which happens frequently, ATM machines in town would also quit working.
5. I found independent travel to be the best way to see more of the Sacred Valley. Group tours don't work for me. You can hire a taxi from Cuzco's main square for about US$30 for the day. That includes the driver and the vehicle itself. You can go anywhere that's the drive agrees to take you in or outside of Cuzco. Note: Quoted price is for the date of own travel.
6. From Ollantaytambo you can catch a train to Agua Caliente. This is the train terminal for Machu Picchu. To get to Machu Picchu, you'll have to purchase a separate bus ticket. Staying overnight in Agua Caliente is recommended if you don't want to rush your visit to Machu Picchu. There's a French bakery named La Boulangerie de Paris, located near the Agua Caliente train station that serves great French pastries. They open quite early in the morning. It's owned by a French lady who lives up to the great tradition of French bakery!
