17. SOUNDBITE: ( Spanish) Andres Arata, Peruvian paso horse expert:
This was originated, probably, due to natural selection in the Peruvian coastal region, I estimate, 300 years ago or more, because the coastal region is a big desert crossed by valleys and it was necessary to travel by horse, with very safe horses, they had to be very strong but at the same time very gentle because the horseman had to travel 40, 50, 60 kilometres in a day to get to the sea port or to the next valley or to a place where he could find water.

The situation in the countryside years ago was that everybody used to work on a horse and the farmers got really used to going everywhere on horses. We lived on the horses, we became part of them. There is where this hobby to the Peruvian paso horse comes from. This horse is a very gentle horse, it doesn't mistreat the rider, a person can ride him for 8 hours, get down and go dancing right away.
21. Multiple winner and National champion Duque or Duke at its corral
22. Breeder Jaime Uranga walking towards the corral
23. SOUNDBITE: ( Spanish) Jaime Uranga, Peruvian paso horses breeder:
To do a good breeding work it's not just a matter or saying 'oh, there is the mare and whatever', you need to think ' what am I going to add to her?,how can I improve her?, what element does she need and what horse can provide it?', I think to have a great animal you do need a great mare and if you have it you also need a great horse, and then find out what is it that the mare lacks, for instance there are some who don't hold the neck high enough, or others who move too much their front legs. Well, you need to find out and say: this is the horse that fits the mare.
24. Various of Uranga and Arata with Duque inside corral
25. Various of mares with the jolts and fillies running around the training field
LEAD IN
Temperament, beauty and versatility are the characteristics that make a good horse, and the Peruvian Paso horse is one breed that is said to meet all those qualities.
According to many experts, due to geographic isolation for many centuries, the Peruvian Paso horse is probably one of the purest breeds in the world.
STORYLINE
The breed of the Peruvian Paso horse is no longer exclusive to Peru, and it is possible to find these horses in Argentina, Japan or the United States.
But it is still in Peru where you find the most amazing and perfect animals which have become the pride of the country, and almost a national symbol.
Expert, Andres Arata, also a prominent member of the Peruvian Paso Horse Breeders Association, and his good friend Don Jaime Uranga, met at Uranga's ranch where he keeps his 35 Peruvians.
The horses are smaller in size than other breeds.

PERU: PERU'S PASO HORSES
Spanish/Nat
Peru's Paso horse has been declared part of the country's official national heritage.
Characterised by an a style of movement that maximizes comfort for the rider, the Paso horse was originally introduced to South America by Spanish conquistadors.
The genetic code of the horse is unique- a product of some four hundred years of selection and crossbreeding.
With pedigrees that stretch back some four hundred years, these horses probably have Peru's bluest blood.
Now they have been named one of Peru's national symbols.
Introduced to Peru by the Spanish colonizers in the seventeenth century the Paso horse was bred to satisfy the need for a smooth and comfortable ride when overseeing plantations and travelling from one settlement to another.
The trot became smoother as the horses developed a flowing movement in which the forelegs are rolled to the outside as the horse strode forward.
The movement is unique to the breed and completely natural.
For hundreds of years, generations of breeders in Peru worked maintain and improve the breed.
Selective breeding and the influence of geographic and climatic conditions in Peru improved the harmonious gait and gentle disposition that have become the characteristics of the Paso horse.
SOUNDBITE: (Spanish)
We're talking about quality. We have the essence, the germoplasma, the quality - and this horse that doesn't allow breeding with any horse of any other species in the world, can be used to improve all the pass horses in the world. But here we cannot cross it because it is the best, the essence, this is the quality, it is the essence of the pass horse and we Peruvians are proud of it and are prepared to share it with the whole world.
SUPER CAPTION: Alfredo Elias, President of the National Association of Breeders and Owners of Pass Horses
At Peru's fifty-fifth National Paso Horses Competition the Paso horse was officially declared part of country's national heritage, to the great delight of breeders and the nation as a whole.
The eight thousand Paso horses currently officially registered in Peru are the finest specimens in the world.
Demand for this type of horse from breeders and horse enthusiasts across the world is high and growing every year.
The breed is highly sought after in Europe, but due to the strict sanitary restrictions imposed by the European Community (E-U), Peru is still not permitted to export the horses to European countries.
Ironically, in order to purchase a Peruvian Paso horse, European buyers must look to Argentina or the U-S.
Peruvian breeders have been waiting for three years for the Ministry of Agriculture's health department to fulfill all the requirements imposed by the E-U so that they can export the horses directly to Europe.
SOUNDBITE: (Spanish)
There have been a series of health regulations in place in the E-C -the European Community- that we can now comply with, and we are waiting for SENASA (The Animal Sanitary Service) to carry out the final stages which we have been working on for the last three years, so that we can satisfy demand (from Europe). Tests have already been done on over two hundred horses and the diseases that the Europeans feared, aren't there and we can say to the Europeans:'Now we are ready to go to Europe'.
SUPER CAPTION: Alfredo Elias, President of the National Association of Breeders and Owners of Pass Horses
The training methods and riding style or seat for the Peruvian horse are based on the traditional Spanish 'a la gineta' way of riding.
This Iberian style of horsemanship was used in the battlefield or for work with bulls and cattle and showed a deep seat with bent knees.
Breeders emphasize the uniqueness of the breed.

Peruvian Paso Horse
The Peruvian Paso horse is known for its unusual gait. This demonstration took place at a private gathering at Hacienda Mamacona in Lima, Peru.
About the Peruvian Paso
About the Breed: There is “something for everyone” in this smooth, elegant animal; riding comfort, strength and stamina for the avid trail rider; calm tractable disposition so important in the family mount; arrogant, flashy presence and action which set the exhibitor and parade rider apart from
others.
The Peruvian Horse is a naturally gaited horse. No artificial devices or special training aids are necessary to enable the horse to perform its specialty “pisos” – a natural four beat footfall of medium speed that provides a ride of incomparable smoothness and harmony of movement. It’s the only horse bred for termino, an outward swinging motion of the front legs not to be confused with “paddling.” Breed information from NAPHA.
Filmed at: MeadowBrook Farm and Denver Queen City Horse Show.
