The Botanical Garden of St. Petersburg is one of the oldest Botanical Gardens in Russia. The Garden was founded in 1714 by order of Peter the Great as the Apothecary's Garden, and soon became a centre for horticultural research that was the equal of any other in Europe in terms of the importance and size of its collection. Originally the Apothecary's Garden focused mainly on growing medicinal herbs, but soon people began bringing saplings and seeds of rare and exotic plants - for which a greenhouse was specially built. Expeditions to various parts of the earth regularly augmented the Botanical Garden's collection with new sorts of trees, shrubs, flowers, and other plants......

For those of you, whose main interest in Peterhof is the beauty of its magnificent gardens and fountains, you'll find this to be the perfect tour as they will be the sole focus of this outing. Peterhof, the town of palaces, fountains and parks, was built by Peter the Great to rival Versailles and a great part of the work was focused on the lavish gardens. The estate construction spanned two centuries and upon its completion it encompassed seven parks and more than 20 smaller palaces and pavilions. Peter himself designed the layout of the 300 acre park and spectacular fountains, 144 in total, all operating without the use of pumps by a combination of naturally generated water pressure and magic.
The Upper Park has as its centerpiece the Neptune Fountain, ending up here after Paul I bought it during one of his shopping trips to Germany. The Lower Park where you find the famous Grand Cascade -- often considered the chief delight of the grounds -- consists of three waterfalls, an avenue of 64 fountains and 37 gilded statues. Samson, constructed in 1734-1735 and the main attraction of Peterhof, is located at the base of the Great Cascade. A hydrofoil will arrive at the pier located in the Low Park to whisk you back to the city while you have the great opportunity so see the city from the perspective of the Gulf of Finland.

Peterhof Great Palace Lower Gardens, Saint Petersburg Russia
An imperial complex on the Gulf of Finland, Peterhof began with the 1714 'Monplaisir' summer palace. The Great Palace and Grand Cascade were expanded in 1745. Severely damaged by Axis forces (1941-44), now continually restored, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Joseph Haydn's piano trio Hob. XV: 17, performed by Cologne Camerata, provides a historically apt accompaniment for the Great Palace architecture, landscape scenes and fountain studies.

Saint Petersburg (Russian: Санкт-Петербу́рг, tr. Sankt-Peterburg) is the second largest city in Russia, politically incorporated as a federal subject (a federal city). Situated on the Neva River, at the head of the Gulf of Finland on the Baltic Sea, it was named Saint Petersburg in 1703. In 1914, the name was changed from Saint Petersburg to Petrograd (Russian: Петрогра́д), in 1924 to Leningrad (Russian: Ленингра́д), and in 1991 back to Saint Petersburg.
Tsar Peter the Great founded Saint Petersburg on May 27 1703. Between 1713–1728 and 1732–1918, Saint Petersburg was the imperial capital of Russia. In 1918, the central government bodies moved to Moscow.
It is Russia's second-largest city after Moscow, with five million inhabitants in 2012, and an important Russian port on the Baltic Sea.. (Wiki)
The dominant natural feature of Peterhof is a sixteen-metre-high bluff lying less than a hundred metres from the shore. The so-called Lower Gardens (Nizhny Sad), at 1.02 km² comprising the better part of Peterhof's land area, are confined between this bluff and the shore, stretching east and west for roughly 200 metres. The majority of Peterhof's fountains are contained here, as are several small palaces and outbuildings. East of the Lower Gardens lies the Alexandria Park with 19th-century Gothic Revival structures such as the Kapella.
Atop the bluff, near the middle of the Lower Gardens, stands the Grand Palace (Bolshoi Dvorets). Behind (south) of it are the comparatively small Upper Gardens (Verhnyy Sad). Upon the bluff's face below the Palace is the Grand Cascade (Bolshoi Kaskad). This and the Grand Palace are the centrepiece of the entire complex. At its foot begins the Sea Channel (Morskoi Kanal), one of the most extensive waterworks of the Baroque period, which bisects the Lower Gardens.. (Wiki)
