Saigon Walk: Pham Ngu Lao St., District 1, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam [4K]
Backpackers and travellers from all around the world gather around the Pham Ngu Lao area - for several different reasons.
(If you want to watch this video with useful information from me, click here:
First of all, there are countless numbers of places to crash. Cheap hostels are everywhere, from the main Bui Vien street to the small alleys in that Pham Ngu Lao area. A bed in a dormitory room costs only about US 5$ per night! Private or double rooms are also available and even cheaper than any other places in the city center of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.
Also, it is easy to make tour reservations to all around Vietnam. You will find lots of tours (mostly similar) in the travel agencies in Pham Ngu Lao street or 'Backpacker's street'. But, check the current price of the tour you want before making the reservation. The meeting point for the tours is often on the same street.
The party street 'Bui Vien' is in the Pham Ngu Lao area. It is the best place to stay the night with people you meet in your hostel! Unlike the other areas in the city, the businesses here are open until sunrise. Drink extremly cheap Vietnamese beers (US 1~2$ for a bottle) as much as you want, enjoy the street food, sitting on the tiny small plastic chairs. You can still have a bowl of Pho (Vietnamese noodle soup) in Phở Quỳnh in the middle of the night.
Taka Plaza is normally a local shopping center, but the one in Pham Ngu Lao is prepared to welcome foreign visitors. I don't recommend the shopping here, but I love the food court! I believe people can enjoy food better in hygienic conditions and an air conditioned place. There are not only Vietnamese, but also other Asian cuisines (Thai, Korean, Japanese, Chinese, Indian, etc.) and also Pizza or Pasta.
The September 23rd Park is not large, but a very relaxing place because of its being completely shaded by huge old tropical trees. You will see a lot of both young and old locals hang out with their friends and play games at night. The famous Ben Thanh market is right across the 9/23 park, passing by McDonald's.
If you have any questions, be sure to leave a comment. Enjoy!

NB: Saigon / Ho Chi Minh City are the same city, the name was changed after the 70s. The locals all call it Saigon so that's what I call it here.

Pham Ngu Lao nightlife is also one of Ho Chi Minh’s finest, with throngs of street vendors, bia hoi stalls, lively bars, and downtown clubs filling up the lively scene. Interesting nightlife entertainment spots include The View Rooftop Bar, Seventeen Saloon, Go 2 and Crazy Buffalo Nightclub as well as many smaller pubs that are known for their cheap drinks and happy hour promos. It’s also common around here to meet friendly expats who are more than happy to share a few tips about travelling in and beyond Vietnam. If you want to immerse yourself in the local culture, we highly suggest getting up early and visit the parks within the area. It is interesting to see (and even to join in on) the elders participating in Tai Chi-like exercise sessions. Another must-do is heading to the morning markets such as Ben Tanh Market, where local vendors sell a wide array of fresh produce, household supplies, and Vietnamese street food at attractive prices. As Pham Ngu Lao is not such a large area, it’s the perfect place to explore on foot - the best time to do this is in the morning and late afternoon as the weather can be rather scorching at the height of the day. If you’re feeling adventurous, there are also travel agencies that can help arrange for day trips within the city centre and beyond.

Saigon Walk: Pham Ngu Lao / Nguyen Thi Nghia & Nguyen Thai Hoc, D1, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam [4K]
This time we walked from the North of the Pham Ngu Lao area to the South-end of district 1.
At the traffic circle (beginning of the video), there are six huge & busy roads you can take. Le Thanh Ton and Ly Tu Trong street lead you to the heart of district 1, where you can find lots of old french colonial architecture. Cach Mang Thang Tam street is a huge messy way to district 3, the home of many locals in Ho Chi Minh City. Nguyen Trai is another long road to district 5, known as 'China Town'.
One reason i like walking streets in Vietnam is because there is always something going on. You will see many small businesses on the road, such as ones selling street food, drinks, cigarettes, or sim cards. Even though the customers, who are usually 100% local Vietnamese, have to sit in the crazy hot weather, they seem just so unbelievably relaxed.
Right after passing the backpacker's area (Pham Ngu Lao street, Bui Vien street), it becomes already a typical local residential area. Since most of the shops have no outside walls or doors, you are allowed to see how local Vietnamese live, without worrying too much about bothering them.
At the end of the road, you will face the Saigon river and district 4. If you want, it is possible to cross the river by foot on the 'Ong Lanh' bridge. Just take around 100 steps back to the road you walk down until 'VietinBank', then you will see stairs to the bridge. For your information, i saw only one person dare to do it.
If you have any questions, be sure to leave a comment. Enjoy!
