Riding the Gold Belt Byway - Phantom Canyon in Colorado
I rode my Suzuki VStorm from Canon City to Victor in Colorado on the #Gold Belt Byway through #Phantom Canyon. This historic Gold Belt Byway is a gravel road which offers great views and fun riding. The road passes over some neat bridges and through two old train tunnels. There are several primitive camping sites along the Gold Belt Byway. Be aware there is also some private land so do not trespass. This was my longest non-paved ride on the Suzuki VStrom. Passing over the historic bridges and through the train tunnels was really interesting. I would like to go back and camp along the Phantom Canyon Road. Please overlook I did not have gloves on during part of the ride. I had them off to help with the camera :)

Road to Cripple Creek Colorado.
Welcome to Cripple Creek, a historic gambling and mining town that’s one of the most dynamic and scenic tourism destinations in Colorado. The grandly restored Old West brick buildings along Bennett Avenue, surrounded by majestic mountains, boast nine unique state-of-the-art casinos, as well as great restaurants, shops and hotels.
The excitement that drove the Greatest Gold Rush Ever still lives in Cripple Creek, where treasure seekers and hooligans from near and far try their hands at poker, black jack, roulette, craps and slot machines with the highest casino paybacks in Colorado.

09 28 2012 - Phantom Canyon
On 9/28/2012, Bro Wes and I drove from Steamboat Springs down towards Cripple Creek, CO. At a small town called Victor, we turned onto this dirt road called Phantom Canyon. The road used to be where an old railroad ran along the bottom of the canyon. It is a really neat drive including nice views of the countryside, pretty shots inside the canyon, including a drive through a couple short tunnels.

Historic Boom Town: Cripple Creek Colorado
Cripple Creek Colorado is a former gold mining district rich in cultural events and attractions. A perfect place for a Colorado vacation with hiking, casinos and mining tours. Cripple Creek today is more of a gambling and tourist town than a ghost town as it has many circa and old artifacts to include building dating to 1896. The casinos have great restaurants, good food and some with hotel lodging for guests. There are many cultural events and local attractions. The town of Victor nearby also has historic buildings and mines.

Driving the Phantom Canyon Road
See
The road was laid on the steep, winding right-of-way of a former rail line that served the mountain mining towns of Victor and Cripple Creek, CO.
Found while studying the map, this was an alternate route we chose to get from Cañon City to the Pike's Peak area (Woodland Park). Driven in a 2005 Dodge Magnum RT, a fairly low-clearance vehicle, anything lower (or with a paint-job you are obsessive about) would have been a problem if this mostly-dirt road had any significant erosion damage. Alas it had only minor tread issues as it appeared the road had been bladed in places recently in response to downpours the area had leading up to our visit.
