Phare Ponleu Selpak (Battambang Circus), Cambodia
28 July 2014 - A bit of the Phare Ponleu Selpak's circus performance in Battambang, Cambodia. Truly a highlight of my visit to not only Battambang, but all of Cambodia as well...
Battambang Circus (Cirque Nouveau - New Circus - Contemporary Circus) Phare Ponleu Selpak, Cambodia
This travel video is of the Battambang Circus (Cirque Nouveau - New Circus - Contemporary Circus) performance, acrobatics, story and art that takes place at Phare Ponleu Selpak twice a week. Phare Ponleu Selpak is an NGO school for disadvantaged children and teenagers in Battambang. The Nouveau Cirque performance is a great cause that supports this school. Highly skilled and trained Khmer children and Cambodian teenagers perform incredible acrobatics, contortion, juggling, trapeze, stretching, jumping and acting feats set to lively music. The contemporary performance is based around a story or theme and does not involve the use of animals. For those interested in the show it costs $10 and is about 10 minute tuk-tuk ride from the city center area. We were both in awe of the performance and we left feeling thoroughly impressed by these talented Khmer / Cambodian kids.

Tonight we're at the local circus in Battambang. It is run by an organization that helps out disadvantaged children. We're excited and looking forward to the show.
This circus is for a good cause. It runs twice a week and our tickets were only ten dollars. Let's go check out the show.

Contemporary circus, or nouveau cirque (as it was originally known in French-speaking countries), is a genre of performing art developed in the later 20th century in which a story or a theme is conveyed through traditional circus skills. Animals are rarely used in this type of circus, and traditional circus skills are blended with a more character-driven approach. Compared with the traditional circuses of the past, the contemporary approach tends to focus more attention on the overall aesthetic impact, on character and story development, and on the use of lighting design, original music, and costume design to convey thematic or narrative content.
Although the literal English translation of nouveau cirque is new circus, the term contemporary circus is generally preferred.
Contemporary circus combines traditional circus skills and theatrical techniques to convey a story or theme. Such acts include acrobatics, juggling, trapeze, acting, music and aerial silk. For aesthetic or economic reasons, contemporary circus productions may be staged in theaters rather than in large outdoor tents. Music used in the production is often composed exclusively for that production, and aesthetic influences are drawn as much from contemporary culture as from circus history. Animal acts appear less frequently in contemporary circus than in traditional circus:

There is nothing about arts in the public schools, says Executive Director Eric Regnault.
After school kids can come here to learn circus or any other of the arts - for free!
Cambodia's circus tradition is as old as the country's Angkor Wat. However during the 1970s, the Khmer Rouge executed almost all of the country's artists. Now Cambodia is rebuilding and Phare is an important part of that process.
Each of us have a unique skill, and we give these skills to the children, says Chamroeun Khuonthan - a former student and now teacher at Phare. We also talk with the children when they have problems at home, kind of like counselors.
But what good is a circus in a country where the average Cambodia only earns $1000 a year?
The arts have made me brave, says Heang Hout - another former student and current teacher at Phare. As an artist, people listen to me and value my opinion.
Twice a week the students put on real shows, but the school is more than just entertainment. It boosts kids who otherwise would have never made it to the big top. Kids like Bor Hak who was taken as a child to work in Thailand.
Then a NGO took me in and asked if I wanted to come here. They said there is a circus and art, and I'd always wanted to draw.
The schools graduates now preform in circuses all around the world - from theaters in France to the Cirque Du Soleil in Canada.
The source for income data is:
Graduates from Phare preforming outside of Cambodia include Sok Dina (Cirque du Soleil), Sopha Nem and Voleak Ung (ENACR, Ecole Nationale des Arts du Cirque de Rosny Sous Bois).

This was a circus show proved by a charity, helping people to be educated and also giving them skills. nLast year they sent two Cambodians to Montreal, an opportunity others only dream off. Truely amazing show.
