Phimeanakas Temple Siem Reap Cambodia
This is all part of numerous Ancient Temples around Cambodia, with these ones around Siem Reap. 10th Century and the mind blowing structures, arts and carvings is incredible to say the least.
Don't let the wet weather fool you in these clips, it was Hot, dam hot, with 100% humidity and 26 dew point.
We had to wear longer clothing out of respect for these temples which made it sticky hot. This day we covered over 15 kilometres in walking and climbing these temples in this heat. This was very draining, BUT rewarding is the end game and these places and this temple was amazing and well worth the hard yakka.

Temples of Angkor Part I: Bayon, Baphuon, Phimeanakas, Terraces; Cambodia
Angkor (Khmer: Holy City) is a region of Cambodia that served as the seat of the Khmer Empire. The ruins of Angkor are located amid forests and farmland near Siem Reap. Many of the temples at Angkor have been restored, and together, they comprise the most significant site of Khmer architecture.
- The Bayon temple most distinctive feature is the multitude of serene and massive stone faces on the many towers which jut out from the upper terrace and cluster around its central peak. They designed with 49 towers and in each tower decorated with the four faces of the compassionate Bodhisattva Avalokesvara with a combination of king Jayavarman VII's face as well.
- Baphuon temple was the largest temple of the Angkor empire and with it's main tower surmounting the massive sandstone pyramid, said to have been clad in bronze, and its spectacular raised entrance causeway Baphuon must have been a truly impressive sight. The temple was dedicated to the Hindu God Shiva.
- Phimeanakas temple is a Hindu temple in the Khleang style, built at the end of the 10th century, during the reign of Rajendravarman (from 941-968), then rebuilt by Suryavarman II in the shape of a three tier pyramid as a Hindu temple. On top of the pyramid there was a tower.
Within the temple itself some beautiful and detailed inscriptions still remain on the walls, and take the nearby paths to lead to ancient bathing pools.
- Elephant terrace and Terrace of the Leper King. The Elephant terrace was used by Angkor's king Jayavarman VII as a platform from which to view his victorious returning army. It was attached to the palace of Phimeanakas. The terrace is named for the carvings of elephants on its eastern face. The terrace of the Leper King derives his name from a 15th century sculpture discovered at the site. The statue depicts the Hindu god Yama, the god of death.
It is faced with dramatic bas-reliefs, both on the interior and exterior.

Siem Reap (Khmer: ក្រុងសៀមរាប) is the capital city of Siem Reap Province in northwestern Cambodia. It is a popular resort town and a gateway to the Angkor region.
Siem Reap has colonial and Chinese-style architecture in the Old French Quarter, and around the Old Market. In the city, there are museums, traditional Apsara dance performances, a Cambodian cultural village, souvenir and handicraft shops, silk farms, rice-paddies in the countryside, fishing villages and a bird sanctuary near the Tonle Sap Lake, and a vibrant, cosmopolitan drinking and dining scene.
Siem Reap today—being a popular tourist destination—has a large number of hotels, resorts, restaurants and businesses closely related to tourism. This is much owed to its proximity to the Angkor temples, the most popular tourist attraction in Cambodia.
Angkor Wat (Wat temple) is the central feature of the Angkor UNESCO World Heritage Site containing the magnificent remains of the Khmer civilization. Angkor Wat's rising series of five towers culminates in an impressive central tower that symbolizes mythical Mount Meru. Thousands of feet of wall space are covered with intricate carving depicting scenes from Hindu mythology. The most important are the Carved Bas reliefs of the Hindu narratives. They tell a story about gods fighting demons in order to reclaim order which can only be achieved by recovering the elixir of life known as amrita. The gods and demons must work together to release it and then battle to attain it.
Angkor Thom is an inner royal city built by Jayavarman VII, the Empire's famed 'Warrior King', at the end of the 12th century and is renowned for its temples, in particular the Bayon. Other notable sites are Baphuon, Phimeanakas, The Terrace of the Elephants and The Terrace of the Leper King. The city can be accessed through 5 city gates, one on each cardinal point and the Victory Gate on the eastern wall.
A number of significant temples are dotted around Angkor Wat and Angkor Thom within the Angkor Archaeological Park, including Ta Prohm, Preah Khan, Banteay Kdei, Phnom Bakheng, Ta Keo, Ta Som, East Mebon, Pre Rup and Neak Pean. These temples may be visited along the grand circuit or the small circuit routes. Other sites are the Roluos group of temples located to the east of Siem Reap.

The Baphuon is the state temple of King Udayadityavarman II. It is located in the old Khmer capital city Angkor Thom, between the Royal Palace and the Prasat Bayon. The sandstone monument that was dedicated to Shiva is in the shape of a stepped pyramid.
When the temple was converted into a Buddhist temple in the 15th century, part of the Baphuon was demolished and the stones used to build a Buddha image on the West end of the temple. The very large reclining Buddha image, which shape is difficult to make out, was never completed.
Phimeanakas sits just about at the centre of what was once the Royal Palace compound, which likely began with the construction of the temple around the mid-10th century. It is attributed to either Suryavarman I, Rajendravarman II, or Harshvarman I. Laterite walls surrounded by moats mark the boundaries of the palace area, within which sit several large ponds.

Angkor Thom, Angkor Wat & Siem Reap (Cambodia) - 4K
Trip Advisor gives both Angkor Thom and Angkor Wat five star reviews, so I was really looking forward to visiting both and they lived up to expectation. We start with a fun tuk tuk ride from our hotel in Siem Reap to Ankor Wat, a really impressive temple surrounded by lakes and woodland. See the stone carved murals and marvel at the workmanship of the lost Khmer empire. After walking along an impressive causeway we reach the ornate entrance the Ankor Thom, a collection of smaller temples, many of which have literally been engulfed by huge trees. The forest and temples have become one to create a fantastic scene that could well be part of a fictional novel about ancient myths, legends and fairytales.

The last capital of the Khmer empire was Angkor Thom. King Jayavarman VII did found it in the late 12th century. You will see the Bayon, the official state temple, and you get a look at the Baphuon, the Phimeanakas, the Terrace of the Elephants, the Terrace of the Lepra King and the Khleang.
Bakong Temple in Cambodia | Attraction in Siem Reap Province
Travel on National Hightway 6 from Phnom Penh city to Siem Reap province for about 4 hours, we will get to the entrance of Bakong Temple. We need to turn left and travel on a small paved road for another 45min to be at Bakong Temple. It's about 308.10 kilometers from Phnom Penh to Bakong Temple. The temple is located at Roluos district, in Siem Reap province. From the entrance, we will reach Preah Ko temple first then Bakong temple next. So Bakong temple is at south of Preah Ko temple. It's a beautiful and amazing temple registered as Angkor World Heritage in 1992. It's one of the temple in Rolous temple group at Siem Reap. We got there around 11:50am, while it's so hot and we had lunch after a visit of the temple. It's a great trip.

The Baphuon is a temple located at Angkor Thom in Siem Reap Cambodia. It was built in the mid 11th Century and was the state temple of Udayadityavarman II. The temple was originally dedicated to the Hindu God Shiva but was converted to a Buddhist temple in the late 15th Century.
