Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens is a complex of buildings and grounds set in Schenley Park, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States. It is a City of Pittsburgh historic landmark and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The gardens were founded in 1893 by steel and real-estate magnate Henry Phipps as a gift to the City of Pittsburgh. Its purpose is to educate and entertain the people of Pittsburgh with formal gardens and various species of exotic plants. Currently, the facilities house elaborate gardens within the thirteen room conservatory itself and on the adjoining grounds. In addition to its primary flora exhibits, the sophisticated glass and metal work of the Lord & Burnham conservatory offers an interesting example of Victorian greenhouse architecture. Phipps Conservatory & Botanical Gardens hosted dinner for many world leaders, including President Obama, for the G-20 Summit held in Pittsburgh, PA on September 24, 2009.

From the Ground Up engaged two groups of high school students from Pittsburgh, Pa. and Kano, Nigeria, inspiring them to share their local culinary traditions with one another as they explored how many of the foods they eat go from seed to plate. The gardens were founded in 1893 by steel and real-estate magnate Henry Phipps as a gift to the City of Pittsburgh. Its purpose is to educate and entertain the people of Pittsburgh with formal gardens (Roman, English, etc.) and various species of exotic plants (palm trees, succulents, bonsai, orchids, etc.). Currently, the facilities house elaborate gardens within the fourteen room conservatory itself and on the adjoining grounds. In addition to its primary flora exhibits, the sophisticated glass and metalwork of the Lord & Burnham conservatory offers an interesting example of Victorian greenhouse architecture.
Phipps is one of the greenest facilities in the world.[5] The entrance pavilion of the Phipps Conservatory has silver-level LEED certification.[6] Its greenhouse production facility has received Platinum certification, the first and only greenhouse to be so certified.[7] Moreover, the Center for Sustainable Landscapes, designed to be as environmentally sustainable as possible, is also LEED Platinum certified, and produces all of its own energy.

Phipps Garden Railroad: 200 Years of Pittsburgh
In honor of Pittsburgh's bicentennial anniversary, the ever-popular Garden Railroad in our South Conservatory has been reinvented, inviting guests on a locomotive journey through two centuries of our city's greatest moments, from the opening of the H.J. Heinz Factory in 1869 to the relaunching of the Point State Park fountain in 2013. Ten snapshots of different time periods in Pittsburgh history are brought to life with five interactive stations that adults and children will delight in. Visitors can turn a hand crank to elevate the Duquesne Incline or push a button to send Three Rivers Stadium into raucous applause and illumination as the Buccos play ball. With exquisitely detailed props and tiny living plants, shrubs and trees providing the lush backdrop of its miniature world, this show will bring wonder and a touch of nostalgia to guests of all ages.

Pittsburgh is a city in western Pennsylvania at the junction of 3 rivers. Its Gilded Age sites, including the Carnegie Museum of Natural History, the Carnegie Museum of Art and the Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens, speak to its history as an early-20th-century industrial capital. In the North Shore neighborhood are the modern Andy Warhol Museum, Heinz Field football stadium and PNC Park baseball stadium.
The pleasure of Pittsburgh remains a well-kept secret. Though not built up by reputation, the city's unique combination of bridges, steep hills, and broad rivers make it one of the most naturally scenic cities in the country. Cheap food and beer abound in this true sports town and the locals are amazingly friendly.
The first European to discover the site of Pittsburgh was French discoverer/trader Sieur de La Salle in his 1669 expedition. The settlement of Pittsburgh began as a strategic point at the confluence of three rivers, with Britain, France, and the local Native American tribes all vying for control over this spot and thus, the region. On what is now referred to as The Point, where the rivers meet, several forts were constructed by competing French and British forces during the French and Indian War. In 1758, British general John Forbes ordered the construction of Fort Pitt, named after British Secretary of State William Pitt the Elder. He also named the settlement between the rivers Pittsborough.

We all know Pittsburgh is a beautiful and unique city, unlike any other in the country (or the world!). Along with other hidden gems in Pittsburgh, there are gardens, statues, memorials, tributes and more that make us a truly special city. Here are some unique outdoor places in Pittsburgh that we think are worth mentioning. Perhaps you’ve visited them recently, or haven’t been in years. Mr. Rogers’ Memorial Statue – No other city has a memorial quite like this one. Our 10-foot tall tribute statue to Mr. Rogers, the grandpa we all grew up with, is in an easily accessible place—in between Heinz Field and PNC Park. The sculpture artist Robert Berks created the piece that was unveiled to the Pittsburgh public in 2009.
Dippy the Dinosaur – Who doesn’t know the giant dinosaur outside the Carnegie Museum of Natural History? The Diplodocus carnegii, or to us, Dippy, is a 22-foot tall fiberglass dinosaur named after Andrew Carnegie. Dippy’s been around since 1999 and has been the delight of many children gazing up at his gigantic Terrible Towel or when it’s cold, a scarf just his size.
The Lozziwurm – The Carnegie Museum of Art is home to this curving, winding structure where kids can hide and play for hours (okay, it’s free and open to the public during museum hours). Once kids are old enough, head into the art museum
Discovery Garden at Phipps’ Conservatory and Botanical Gardens – Phipps’ Conservatory and Botanical Gardens always used to be one of my all-time favorite places to visit as a kid and teen. The space lets kids use their senses as they learn about basic biological terms like the cycle of life and being kind to the environment. In addition to the Discovery Garden, their Light Garden around the holidays is something unique and breathtaking. It definitely puts me in the holiday spirit every year!
Point State Park – Honestly where else can you find something as unique as a park located at the confluence of three rivers? Point State Park is also historical—it honors the strategic and historic heritage of the area during the French and Indian War. Now, guests can boat, hike, or bike through the historic grounds. Don’t forget about the grand Christmas tree too during the holiday season. Aside from being one of the beautiful outdoor places in Pittsburgh, Point State Park is also on our list of Scenic Views In Pittsburgh.
