Phoenix Convention Center Tenured Staffer Celebrates 47 Years of Service | Inside Phoenix
For 47 years, the Phoenix Convention Center has served the residents of Phoenix as a major economic driver for the state and local economies and for 47 years, Ernest Anderson has served Convention Center guests.
On Sept. 28, 1972 the Phoenix Convention Center opened its doors as the Phoenix Civic Plaza to welcome attendees for conventions, tradeshows and events. Today, the Phoenix Convention Center & Venues is among the 25 largest public meeting facilities in the U.S. and welcomes approximately 1M guests each year, hosting more than 500 events annually. On Sept. 11, 1972, Ernest Anderson began his career as a Civic Plaza worker and promoted through the ranks to retire as an Auditorium Supervisor. Ernest's love for the facility and people led him to continue working part-time as a Venue Host to welcome visitors from around the globe. Meet PCC's longest tenured employee and get a first-hand account of how the Convention Center has played a role in shaping Arizona's history.

Phoenix Convention Center
The 24-acre Phoenix Convention Center, in the heart of Downtown Phoenix, has been hosting national and regional conventions and trade shows as well as consumer events and theatrical productions since it opened in 1972. And, as Phoenix has undergone tremendous growth through the years by attracting high-technology businesses, transplants from other states, and an increase in tourism, so has Phoenix Convention Center.
The concept for a performing arts auditorium developed as early as 1959. At that time, cultural and theatrical events were being held in outdated high school auditoriums. It was determined that the Phoenix metropolitan area would benefit, not only from having an entertainment facility, but also from a facility that could accommodate regional and national convention business.
A citizens group was formed in the early 1960s to study the development of a convention center and the idea for Phoenix Civic Plaza became reality. In 1963, in order to finance construction, the non-profit Phoenix Civic Plaza Building Corporation was created. On April 15, 1969, the city of Phoenix and Phoenix Civic Plaza Building Corporation signed legal agreements for the initial construction of the convention center.
The Phoenix Civic Plaza Department was created in November 1969 to oversee the operational aspects of the construction, purchase equipment and hire and train staff. Construction of Phoenix Civic Plaza began the same year and was completed in 1972 at a cost of $28 million and occupying 16.5 acres. The original project included Phoenix Symphony Hall, which opened at the same time.
Six years later, the demand for additional space created a need for expansion. During that time, several conventions were bumped because of previous commitments and conflicting dates. When construction was completed in 1985, Phoenix Civic Plaza had more than doubled its available space to over 300,000 square feet.
In the mid-1990s Phoenix Convention Center embarked on an ambitious $32 million renovation project to update and enhance its image and keep the facility competitive for convention and trade show business.
A multi-phased $600 million expansion project has nearly tripled the size of the Phoenix Convention Center, making it one of the top 20 convention venues in North America. Phase I opened in 2006, with Populous as the design architect and Leo A. Daly as the prime and managing architect. Populous served as both design architect and architect of record for Phase II of the expansion, which was completed in 2008.
The design of the new convention center aims to reference the unique Arizona landscape. Steel canopies extend over third Street to create shade. The large glass and stone atrium in the West Building represents the unique angles and light of an Arizona slot canyon. Colors, textures and finishes capture the warm hues of the Sonoran Desert and the cool tones of an Arizona desert sky.
The Convention Center is served by METRO Rail's Washington at 3rd Street station when service began on December 26, 2008.

Glendale City Council says No sale! of the Foothills Library! (Final Episode)
No sale of the Foothills Library
By Bette Sharpe - Glendale Daily Planet - Video by Ed Sharpe KKAT-IPTV Glendale AZ
The Glendale City Council decided unanimously not to proceed with exploring the real estate transaction with Midwestern University that would have resulted in the relocation of the Foothills Library. The council made its decision after reviewing recommendations from the Library Advisory Board, Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission and Arts Commission following each group’s public meeting on the proposed sale and relocation. All three groups had unanimous recommendations against the proposal.
This is an example of city government at its best, said Erik Strunk, Director of Community Services. We were instructed by the Council to find out what our commissions and boards thought of the proposed sale and relocation. Through their reach into the community we received great public feedback that we were able to report back to Council and give them a true pulse on how our residents felt.
Mr. Strunk, Executive Director Parks, Recreation and Library Services, thanked the members of the boards and the public for their work and input. On Tuesday, March 17, 2015 the council chambers was about two-thirds full of mostly library supporters. Mayor Jerry Weiers asked each chairperson of the three boards and commissions to make a brief statement; John Christian, Chairperson, Glendale Parks and Recreation Commission, Carol Ladd, Chairperson, Glendale Arts Commission, and Karen Aborne, Glendale Library Advisory Board. They thank the Mayor and City Council for their decision to let the boards and commissions present their findings. The council unanimously stopped the issue from proceeding any further. Mayor Weiers, This whole issue is gone. These words put to rest many of the worries some had of the sale of Foothills Library may come up again at another time.
However, Councilmember Sherwood hinted at a possibility, That sometime later we can partner with Midwestern on the available land and maybe add to something and not take away. Just a typical thought out of the box. He when on to say that he has not discussed this with anybody, but has brought this up at one of his district meetings.
Councilmember Tolmachoff, I would like to thank Erik and Michael too. I know it was a difficult just-so-called task to embrace. But I appreciate your dedication to the city; and for the citizens to understand that it would be just as irresponsible to not just sell the library as it would be to sell the library without your input. We were simply looking for public input.
Each councilmember acknowledged that they had received a huge number of letters, emails, public comments and telephone calls on the proposed sale of the Foothills Library.
Councilmember Sherwood said, It was sad that Midwestern was scorned on some of this, because they have been such a great partner of ours. This idea came to the council’s attention over a year ago and, It was not being hidden from anybody.
Councilmember Turner suggested using some of the estimated 8 to 10,000 square feet of underutilized space at the Glendale Media Center as a location for the new technology center that was purposed for the Foothills Aquatic Center (FRAC). Turner asked staff to, Take the basics and of what they started with looking at FRAC and see how they might adapt that purposed ‘library style’ into the space we have at the Media Center.…A magnet library if you will. Cost for the possible future state-of-the-art library would be less than one million dollars. Grants and volunteers would help offset costs.
West Glendale has been looking forward to having a new library branch for about twenty years. That is a long time to wait. Library patrons need to travel to a library that is outside of the city or travel to downtown Glendale to Velma Teague Branch. (Velma Teague Branch Library is undergoing some much needed renovation. Look for new carpeting, a larger story time room, and other changes.)
