Hangzhou Phoenix Mosque-Athaan by Imam Mohamed
This is the Athaan (Call to Prayer) by Imam Mohamed at the Hangzhou Phoenix Mosque in Hangzhou, China.
-----------------------------------------------------------
What is the Athaan?
Muslims use the human voice to call the faithful to pray. Muslims pray 5 times a day:
Fajr — the dawn prayer
Dhuhr — the noon prayer
Asr — the afternoon prayer
Maghrib — the sunset prayer
Isha'a — the night prayer
The athaan is the call to prayer to each of the 5 prayers.

ENDLESS Chinese STREET FOOD Tour - Beef Rolls, Five Layered Pork, Slippery Wontons | Hangzhou, China
After arriving in Hangzhou, China, I met up with my friend Jamie, the owner of UnTour Food Tours, who took me on a sneak peak of their newest Hangzhou tour!
First up was a traditional pancake that contains preserved mustard greens, green onions, and minced pork! It was served steaming hot and had lots of delicious, flaky layers. All it needed was some sauce!
Next, we had beef rolls wrapped in tofu skin at a Muslim snack shop. The beef was bursting with five spice flavor. It was so different to anything I’d had in China so far! The layers of tofu skin and spices complemented the juicy beef!
We briefly stopped at the Phoenix Mosque, one of the four largest mosques in China, before visiting an open-air wet market, where we saw bamboo shoots, razor clams, freshwater eels, and dried meat! The dried meat looked so delicious!
After trying a clear, watery, and floral honey, we bought a spicy pancake-like dish and saw some baijiu, a fermented alcoholic drink that has an alcohol content above 20%. It cost about $2 U.S. for 500 mL!
The pancake was almost like a Chinese pizza that had been cut into squares. It came slathered with a flavorful, glazy, red sauce. I loved the contrast created by the sesame seeds!
After a walk along a pedestrian-friendly street, we visited a multigenerational pickle shop! The aroma inside was very potent. We bought a flowering herb called Solomon Scroll that looked almost like a worm as well as a pickle that contained daikon, ginger, and cucumbers.
Then, we had slippery pork wontons, which were super thin and paper-like and served in a soup! They evaporate in your mouth and slip right down your throat! Next was an insanely tender and juicy Hangzhou specialty called Beggar’s Chicken, which is wrapped in a lotus leaf, covered in mud, and baked, as well as delicious, al dente noodles with sliced bamboo and pickled mustard greens.
After our meal, we flew down an ancient street lined with stores, restaurants, and souvenir shops to get to a traditional medicine shop selling huge mushrooms, ginseng, and other traditional medicines. The building gave me a real feel of China from centuries ago!
Up next was a hike to work off our meal! We headed up a hill to get to the Medicine God Temple at the top. You pray to the medicine god if you’re sick. Inside the temple is a tea house where I was treated to epic views of the city and the massive West Lake! It almost reminded me of Bosnia!
There, we tried Dragon Well tea, the most famous green tea in the world. As we sipped out tea, we also tried pickled daikon radish, which was really refreshing! Then was the Solomon’s Scrolls, some sweet rolls, and dried ginger, kumquats, and plum. They were so good! We finished up with a strong Chinese fruit wine!
Then we headed through the garden and made our final stop at a traditional Hangzhou snack shop, where we tried more local specialties, including fava beans, a caramelized pork belly with a red sauce, and glutinous and sweet rice balls.
The fava beans reminded me of edamame and had dried chilies in them. The caramelized pork belly was super thick and fatty and unbelievably tasty with the sauce. The soup was like a sweet egg drop soup with rice balls. It wasn’t my favorite, but only because I’m not really a sweets guy.
Wow! What an incredible food tour. I have to thank Jamie and UnTour Food Tours for showing me around Hangzhou and giving me the opportunity to sample so many local favorites. I had such a great time!

Hangzhou Phoenix Mosque-Athaan by Imam Masoum
Hangzhou Phoenix Mosque Athaan by Imam Masoum during Jumuah (Friday) Prayers.
The mosque follows the Hanafi school of thought and has two athaans (call to prayers). There is one before the bayan (short talk/lecture) in Chinese and then the khutbah (sermon) which is in Arabic. There is a second athaan before the khutbah which Imam Masoum is doing in this video.

The Ancient Buildings in Fenhuang (Phoenix Town), China
Fenghuang not only has great natural beauty but also an ancient history that spans 1300 years with distinctive, residential buildings and celebrated men. Two men from the Chinese Republican era were born in this small city. Xiong Xiling, the first premier of the Republic of China and Shen Congwen, a famous Miao scholar.
A very imposing house belonged to Chen Baozhen, a powerful general, Chinese statesman and reformer in Qing times. All interesting even though we had never heard any of these names before.
HANGZHOU - Tea House & West Lake
“A good snapshot keeps a moment from running away.” ― E. Welty
With our China tour slowly coming to an end, we prepared ourselves to relish the experiences that today’s adventures in Hangzhou offered. Our morning started with our bus weaving through the picturesque terraced tea-plantations of the Meijiawu Tea Culture Village. Prior to us arriving at the charming Tea House, our knowledgeable tour guide (a green tea connoisseur himself) described the process the farmers use to produce the fragrant West Lake Dragon Well Tea. At the Tea House a qualified tea expert explained and demonstrated the processes for picking, drying and grading the leaves. She also amazed everyone with a ‘magical’ chemical demonstration that emphasized the health benefits of green leaf tea. And, of course we all got the opportunity to sample and purchase some high-grade tea leaves and other goodies. Michael’s sweet tooth didn’t allow him to leave the Tea House without buying a couple of packets of delicious green tea lollies!
Back on the bus for a short drive to the most popular place in Hangzhou - West Lake. This beautiful fresh water lake located in the middle of the city is the subject of many poems and paintings. Utterly mesmerising with the pagoda-topped hills rising over willow-lined waters and stunning temples, pavilions, gardens and bridges surrounding it. There were many kinds of boats, including large painted boats and small rowing boats that drifted along the lake. An aura of romance was added to our boat trip as Joe told us the legendary story originating in West Lake …. isn’t love grand!
After our lake cruise we had some time to ourselves for arranging lunch and strolling around the nearby shops. We then wandered back to the bus and admired the beautiful tree-lined streets and stunning parks with manicured garden beds. Then it was all aboard for our scenic 2hr bus ride to Shanghai.
The scenery was remarkable! We goggled at the vast rice fields and sprawling farmlands interwoven with impressive farm houses. The dense high-rise apartment buildings extended towards the horizon (as far as the eye could see) and all of this was intertwined with an abundance of cranes signalling further development and construction.
As we neared Shanghai, we took a moment to reflect on our day’s adventures (so far) and agreed that the picturesque scenery was nothing short of SPECTACULAR!
Time to hit the road!

Buddhist temple Hangzhou
I have no idea who these women are- I can tell you they came on tour bus and flooded the window where you enter and purchased incense. Like gangbusters they gathered around the pyre and began to break out in song-- quite no nonsense. They had a clear mission. Interesting. - if anyone knows what this group is about, I'd love to know.

Stuck in Hangzhou China with the Locals
Not a very pleasant day for me. I was on the corner of some local area in Hangzhou and the client did not speak a word of English but i think he said to wait there. It was over 100 degrees too. However, about an hour later with no client in sight, i got smart and started asking people if they could read this text message. Luckily after trying to ask about 15 people one young girl looked at me and pointed across the street. And lo and behold, i walked in and a lady told me to follow her to get my makeup done. After that all was good!
