Afternoon cycling in Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park, Vietnam
After a massive afternoon downpour, I took out the bicycle for a short but breathtaking ride along the Son River. Ended up at the mouth of the Phong Nha cave for sunset.

Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park is one of my favourite places in Vietnam. It’s home to some of the world’s most spectacular caves, stunning karst mountain landscapes, dense forest and friendly picturesque villages. Best of all, you can visit most places by bicycle or on foot. It’s a special mix for travellers wanting a uniquely Vietnam experience in a natural setting.

PHONG NHA Adventure Cycling with Private Shi
Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park is located in the Bo Trach and Minh Hoa districts in the centre of Quang Binh province, central Vietnam. The park is bordered by Laos to the west, and the Ho Chi Minh trail crosses through the middle. Its 330 square miles was set aside in 2001 to protect one of Asia's largest cave systems. The park actually became famous as the Cave Kingdom when Hang Son Doong, the World's Biggest Cave, was explored and featured by National Geographic in Jan 2011. Locals are witnessing the blooming of world tourism in Phong Nha Ke Bang National park day by day. But the area is not only about caves—its people, local culture, foods and customs are what travelers are interested in.
Travelers first come to see the caves but they stay for much more, including the sheer beauty of the landscape.
Private Shi -- a nickname of Shi, a local boy whose passion is cycling, would love to show you this area through one of his guided bicycle tours. These excursions encompass everything a tour needs -- storytelling, history, and a heaping dose of adventure. Adventurers are encouraged to complete a stage of 20 km up to 70 km cycling a day to voyage through the Cave Kingdom! Let's Rock 'n' Roll!

Phong Nha Ke Bang - Vietnam (via Jungle Boss)
During our travels through Vietnam, we made a stop at the Phong Nha Ke Bang National Park. We weren't exactly sure where to start exploring this beast, but we were lucky enough to stumble upon a tour company called Jungle Boss. Normally we are reluctant to join a tour, but this experience has changed our opinion.
We signed up for the 1 day National Park tour with the most amazing tour guide Nga. She was funny, knowledgeable and personable. Starting a mountain hike up to Paradise cave, we ventured inside the longest natural cave system in the world. We continued on to 8 Lady Temple where we learned some Vietnamese history. As it approached lunch time, we trekked through the jungle only to find a camp site setup with tasty family style BBQ. To finish the day we took a dip inside Tra Ang cave and swam 600m in pure darkness to the end of the cave and finished with some cold beers.
We had an unforgettable time exploring Phong Nha Ke Bang National Park with Jungle Boss and our awesome tour guide Nga. It was everything we hoped it would be and more. Nothing but good things to say!

Check my vlog from Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park. It's an incredibly beautiful park in the Bố Trạch and Minh Hóa districts of central Quảng Bình Province of Vietnam. Many tourists come here every day to see the world's most fascinating caves.
(!) Please note, that Phong Nha is an expensive area for tourists. Be ready to pay to enter every cave. And for some of them, you are even recommended to hire a guide. As we don't like guided tours, we visited Paradise Cave. And honestly - you must go there! This cave was far above my expectations - the most beautiful and spectacular stalactites and stalagmites I've seen in my life. We also learned that Paradise cave was discovered in 2005 and opened up to tourists only in 2010!
There are lots of things to do in Phong Nha national park besides caving. For example, you can visit the Botanic garden with a beautiful waterfall as we did. Or just driving around the park on a motorbike can be a good option too. Most of the homestays offer simple bicycles for free or to rent a motorbike for small money.
And if you are not lucky with the weather, go to Phong Nha Coffee Station ( - they make the best coffee in Vietnam. The barista is super nice and happy to explain how they make coffee and what is the difference between good and bad Vietnamese coffee :)

Phong Nha-Kẻ Bàng National Park Motorbike Loop in Vietnam
I ride my first scooter in Vietnam around the Phong Nha motorbike loop in the Phong Nha-Kẻ Bàng National Park. On the way, Lucy and I stop at the site of a bomb explosion during the Vietnam War, the Phong Nha Botanic Gardens, and the Phong Nha Cave; however, the water level was too high for the boats to enter the cave, so we decided not to do that.
This is the gear I use to vlog:

The Best Things to do in Phong Nha, Vietnam
We definitely left a bit of our hearts in this amazing place when travelling through Vietnam. Our week was jam-packed with activities such as caving until our hearts content (with and without a tour guide) and zip-lining/kayaking/floating around in mud pools. We rode a bloomin' buffalo and topped it all off by receiving a foot massage from 100 excited ducks qualified in foot-tickle therapy. A truly unforgettable 10 days spent in one of our favourite places in Vietnam!
