Seville, Spain walking tour
You will find in Seville all that a traveler can hope for: Pedestrian shopping streets and quiet alleys; flower-scented gardens, an ancient palace and immense cathedral, hundreds of historic sites; three thousand years of conflict and peace; thrilling evening entertainment; excellent museums; great food and drink, especially the tapas; and rewarding nearby attractions -- the list goes on until you run out of time.
Seville’s city center is divided in various parts: there’s Macarena in the north; El Arenal on the west side; the central shopping zone; and most exciting of all—Santa Cruz with the narrow pedestrian streets and lots of shopping and eating.
There are other districts or barrio in the city after all Seville is the fourth-largest city in Spain with the metropolitan population of about 1.5 million, but for the visitor that central area is your main destination.
Seville’s historic center is quite large—about a mile wide by 1.5 miles long, riddled with countless little alleys and important landmarks. You can discover it on foot if you are selective and seek out the particular attractions that most appeal to your interests. We suggest here an organized plan for doing just that, but it’s sometimes better to push the plan aside and just wander: certain neighborhoods, especially Santa Cruz, are perfect for the aimless stroll, and the downtown pedestrian zone of Seville is a shopper’s paradise.
So let's take a little walking tour in Santa Cruz.
An excellent central location to start your first walking tour is between the Cathedral and Alcazar palace in the Plaza del Triunfo. Many of the town’s main attractions can be easily reached from this central space, making it convenient for you to pick a direction, any direction, and go -- but with such an abundance of choices it can be a little tricky to decide where best to begin. Which way to turn depends on your priorities and the time of day, but no matter; there will be time in the next few days to fit everything in.
Walking is always the best way to see a place and especially when it's so pedestrian-friendly like Seville with so many lanes that are dedicated just to the pedestrian and other narrow lanes where you have very little traffic. You always want to use that walker's rule of thumb, that when you get to an intersection, look around and see which way looks most interesting. That's if you have the time to wander. And it can lead you from one place to the next with great satisfaction. On the other hand if you're in a hurry, you want to follow a little bit more of a specific plan and stick to it and perhaps follow a map.
Next we are going to take you through downtown pointing out some of the major plazas and the lovely pedestrian lanes. Starting out at Plaza Nueva, the most popular place in town.
This central area with the plaza and the streets leading to it is really the heart and the focal point of the city. Notice the broad street that is for pedestrians, bicycles, no cars allowed, and the tram.
Seville has a recently installed modern tram system that really is a great way to move people around. This neighborhood along Constitution Avenue has been entirely transformed by the tram service because now there are no cars going by, you don't have those exhaust fumes and noise, and so there's a lot more room for people throughout. You’ve got the sidewalk restaurants, you’ve got people walking, strolling along, lounging, people-watching, and the street is a major one that connects the cathedral with the City Hall Square, and then beyond, right into the pedestrian shopping zone where we will be taking you next.
Plaza Nueva is just one block over from the main pedestrian street of town which leads right into the shopping district -- Calle Sierpes, lined with the best shopping and liveliest atmosphere, especially in the late afternoon when the locals are out enjoying their traditional stroll.
Sierpes means “Street of the Serpent” perhaps due to its wiggly route and extreme length. It goes for nearly a mile and it's not just the one street it's an entire shopping zone, a fabric of side lanes and parallel streets that make for the most important shopping area of the city. There are a lot of beautiful old buildings here with tiles on the walls in that typical Andalusion style, so you want to be sure to look up a couple of floors to see the roof lines and the tiles up above and windows and balconies, maybe some flowerpots as you're walking along on these main shopping streets.
Seville, City Walk in the Center and Old Town - Spain 4K Travel Channel
Seville is the capital of Andalusia. With 700,000 inhabitants, it is the fourth largest city in Spain. We have chosen a simple but good hotel in the Calle de la Alhóndiga in the old city. From here we can easily reach almost every point of the city by foot. The Calle de la Alhóndiga leads through the Calle Corral del Rey and Calle Argote de Molina straight into the center to the Cathedral of Santa María de la Sede of Seville. In the labyrinth of the old town there are so many things to discover, be it a good restaurant, beautiful patios or the Bordados Foronda, a shop for traditional Andalusian clothes and accessories. Bordados Foronda is also a factory where the articles are produced. The friendly lady in the shop allows us some shots. We first visit the Cathedral, which, due to its size and importance, we have devoted an own contribution, just like the Royal Palace Alcazar.
The cathedral is built on the foundations of a mosque of which only the impressive 97 meter high Giralda Tower remained. It was once the minaret. Between Cathedral and Alcazar, we pass the Archivo de Indias, the third UNESCO World Cultural Heritage in Seville. It is the most important collection on Spain's colonial period. The Archivo de Indias is housed in the building of the former stock exchange. In front of the walls of Alcazar, we listen to to Carlos del Rio for a while, whom we owe this beautiful flamenco music.
Through one of the last remaining city gates, the Oil Postigo del Aceite, we go towards Rio Guadalquivir. To our left are the old shipyards, which were connected to the port. They are among the oldest monuments of Seville. To the right you see the post office.
On the riverbanks we pass the Torre del Oro, which we will show in a separate article. We reach the Avenida de la Constitution. Magnificent buildings impress the visitors. Shortly before the city hall we see some flamenco dancers.
On Placa Nueva we make a break while we watch a little boy who simulates to ride on an one of the electric rental bikes.
We enter the old town of Seville, marvel at the architecture and pass by the Iglesia del Salvador. In addition to designer shops we find grocery stores where you can buy everything, as well as exclusive restaurants and traditional bars. Passing the Metropol Parasol we reach our hotel.

Seville, Spain walk in Santa Cruz Old Town
In Seville, Spain the most exciting and popular pedestrian neighborhood is the Old Town — Santa Cruz with the narrow pedestrian streets and lots of shopping and eating. Here we show big walking route through this formerly Jewish district, strolling a couple of miles back in time. It'll take you right through the center including shopping areas, past the Cathedral, Alcazar and the old quarter of Santa Cruz where we're going to focus our attention for this segment.
Be advised many of these little streets in Santa Cruz and the little plazas have been discovered by the tourists, so depending on when you're here the main lanes might get a little crowded but there's always the lovely side lanes that you can find for a more peaceful and tranquil atmosphere. So just follow your nose when you're wandering around in Santa Cruz district, and we will give you some tips here on how to navigate and what to see.
Among Europe’s best neighborhoods for strolling, the main part of this warren is only about six blocks in each direction, enabling you to wander freely and discover it in a couple of hours. Santa Cruz is so magical you should return in the warm atmosphere of early evening to appreciate the soft lighting, and settle into a quaint little tavern for dinner. Once is just not enough for a special district like this, which also has several small hotels that make ideal places to stay.

Seville, Spain
Recorded August 19, 2008.
Seville is the artistic, cultural, and financial capital of southern Spain. It is situated on the plain of the River Guadalquivir, with an average elevation of 23 feet above sea level. The population of the city of Seville is just over 700,000. The population of the metropolitan area is 1.5 million, ranking as the fourth largest metropolitan area of Spain.
The video begins at the Plaza de España, one of Seville's most easily recognized buildings and the epitome of the Moorish Revival in Spanish architecture. Next it is into the old quarter of the city where our first stop was the Royal Alcázar, a royal palace which was originally a Moorish fort. Next we walk to The Cathedral of Seville which is the largest Gothic cathedral and the fourth largest Christian church in the world. Our walk continues through the narrow streets of the Santa Cruz district. We were treated to flemenco music and dance during our lunch at the Macarena Hotel. After lunch I walk around the Parliament building of the autonomous community of Andalucía which was across the street from the hotel. It was back on the bus after lunch as we drive past the El Alamillo Bridge and bull ring as we drive out of town.

Rick Steves' Europe Travel Guide | Sevilla is the flamboyant city of Carmen and Don Juan, where bullfighting is still politically correct and little girls dream of growing up to become flamenco dancers. Sevilla has soul — and we feel it in its lacy Moorish palace, massive cathedral, lavish royal tombs, labyrinthine Jewish quarter, and its people-filled streets.

It is situated on the plain of the River Guadalquivir. The inhabitants of the city are known as sevillanos (feminine form: sevillanas) or hispalenses, after the Roman name of the city, Hispalis. Seville has a municipal population of about 703,000 as of 2011, and a metropolitan population of about 1.5 million, making it the fourth-largest city in Spain and the 30th most populous municipality in the European Union. Its Old Town, the third largest in Europe with an area of 4 square kilometres (2 sq mi), contains three UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the Alcázar palace complex, the Cathedral and the General Archive of the Indies. The Seville harbour, located about 80 kilometres (50 miles) from the Atlantic Ocean, is the only river port in Spain.

???? ABOUT THIS VID! ????
⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯
Seville is one of the most amazing places in Spain to eat tapas. It has a fantastic mix of old school, traditional tapas bars, and modern, new tapas bars. It’s the capital of Andalusia and where the tapas tradition truly began. But if you want to get away from the tourist centre, and hit some very local and atmospheric tapas bars that are filled with locals and serve delicious food - then you need to head to Triana. It’s just over the Guadalquivir River and is a neighbourhood that has always had a very strong sense of identity. Locals say, I’m not from Seville, I’m from Triana!
In this video I head to five super local tapas bars in the Triana neighbourhood. We try everything from jamón to shrimp to pork cheek to tortilla. And we drinks wines, vermouth and sherry. I’m joined by some of my Devour Tours colleagues on the journey. So, if you want to have a truly local tapas experience in a real Sevilla neighbourhood, I suggest checking out these five places. We head to Bar Santa Ana, Cervecería La Granda, Las Golondrinas, Casa Cuesta, La Antigua Abacería.
