Dinosaur Museum Phu Wiang
Das Museum ist sehr empfehlenswert. Es wird die Entstehung des Sonnensystem bis hin zur heutigen Zeit gezeigt.
Der Schwerpunkt liegt dabei aber auf die hier meistens gefundenen Dinosaurier. Hier hat man 1976 den ersten Dinodaurierknochen in Thailand gefunden.
Das Museum öffnete 2001seine Pforten.
Das Museum wird landschaftlich vom Nationalpark Phu Wiang umgeben. Hier findet man mehrere Wasserfälle, die aber fast nur Wasser während der Regenzeit führen.

Phu Wiang Dinosaur Museum is a geological museum mainly exhibiting fossils. It is under the administration of the Department of Mineral Resources, Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, the Royal Thai Government, and situated in the Khok Sanambin public area in Tambon Nai Muang, Wiang Kao district, Khon Kaen province in the northeastern region of Thailand. The museum was constructed with a budget from the Tourism Authority of Thailand under supervision of the Department of Mineral Resources and comprises an area of 40 acre. It has been open to the public since 2001.
Beginning in 1970, the US Geological Survey conducted a mineral exploration in Phu Wiang area of Khon Kaen province and discovered a type of uranium ore, coffinite, in association with copper ores, azurite and malachite. The International Atomic Energy Agency later joined in. Between 1975 and 1980, the Department of Mineral Resources had conducted a detail drilling program and in 1976 Sudham Yaemniyom, a geologist, discovered a piece of bone on a streambed, Huai Pratu Tima, of which was later identified as a distal part of left femur of a sauropod dinosaur , regarded as the first dinosaur discovery of Thailand.
Since 1976, the Department of Mineral Resources with Thai-French Paleontological Project had continuously investigated the dinosaurs in the Phu Wiang mountains. The project found so many vertebrae, teeth, and footprints of the dinosaurs mainly from sandstone of Early Cretaceous Sao Khua Formation including sauropod and theropod with wide range of sizes from a hen up to a large dinosaur with about 15 meters long. These finds have excited Thai people to make visiting the dinosaur sites as well as Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn who visited the site no. 2 on the 3rd of November 1989. Her Royal Highness also visited the second time at the site no. 3 and the Phu Wiang Dinosaur Museum with the committees of the Prince Mahidol International Award, Prince Mahidol Award Foundation under the royal patronage on 25 October 2008.

Khon Khaen Dinosaur
Long before there were humans here in Isaan, this area was ruled by dinosaurs. Many fossils and dinosaur artifacts have been found here, and ever since then Thailand’s had major dinosaur fever. That’s why there are many tourist attractions around Khon Kaen devoted to dinosaurs. We’re going to take you to around!
This is Phu Wiang dinosaur museum, around 15 minutes outside of Khon Kaen. It’s Thailand’s first dinosaur museum, and it’s filled with artifacts and dinosaur fossils found in the Isaan area. It’s home to the first dinosaur discovery in Thailand, a four-legged plant eating dinosaur with a long neck and a tail called a sauropod. He was found by accident in 1976. Tourists can come here to learn about fossils like this one and the process of fossil conservation.
From Thailand’s first dinosaur museum we are here, at Thailand’s first dinosaur excavation site. This is Phu Wiang National Park. This is the home of a numerous amount of paleontological sites where fossils have been found. It’s one of the world’s largest dinosaur graveyards.
Today you can come to Phu Wiang National Park and go trekking to excavation sites like this one. This is where a partial skeleton of one of T-rex’s early ancestors. Some say that if you get off the beaten track here in Phu Wiang, you can even find dinosaur footprints. From the viewpoint, you can see all of the national park from a fantastic perspective.
On the road to Phu Wiang National Park is the Si Wiang Dinosaur Park, around 70 kilometers outside of Khon Kaen. This museum is a great introduction to learning about dinosaurs, with models of various species that can make sounds and move. Don’t be scared, even though they may seem quite real.
As you can see, Khon Kaen is a wonderful place to learn about pre-historic times… and you’ll even get to see the real places where dinosaur history was made here. Don’t miss out on the Phu Wiang dinosaur museum, Phu Wiang national park and Si Wiang dinosaur park. It’s sure to be a lot of fun!
