Phuket Airport Transportation Woes
Ground transport at Phuket airport continues to be a major issue. A meeting last week discussed how taxi services are managed...a tourism official suggested that taxis queue up with drivers paying a 50 baht fee, as they do at Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport.

Getting Around in Phuket
Getting Around in Phuket Thailand is easy! Most of the beach resorts are small enough to walk around and most hotels are located close to the beach, restaurants and shopping areas. However, if you feel like doing a little exploring around the island but your hotel is not on one of the main beaches, there are a number of transport options for you to choose from, including public buses, which are air-conditioned “micro” buses that service the Phuket Town area. And then there’s private bus services, known as “Songthaew”. But these blue pick-up trucks, decked with bench seats and a cover, run along set routes, but will stop anywhere along the way to drop off or pick up passengers. Songthaew buses leave from Ranong Road and serve most of the island with a regular service, travelling between the hub at Phuket Town and the destination.
Typically, but not always, the destination is written in English on a sign on the side of the bus. A number of pink Songthaew buses also run on two routes from Phuket City to Big C and Tesco, and Super Cheap to Chaofa Road. If the bus is moving, it is necessary to wave at the driver to signal him or her to stop and allow new passengers to get on. Payment is made to the driver when disembarking the bus. To get off, signal the driver by ringing the bell. The fare is typically between 15 to 35 thai baht for a designated route depending on the distance travelled.
There are few metered taxis operating on the island, and can generally be found outside of Phuket airport to the right of the main terminal building. Before starting any journey it is suggested to try and insist the fare meter be turned on if it is not switched on already. If this is not possible, it may be necessary to negotiate a fare. For shorter trips in and around Phuket Town, you may want to consider a motorbike taxi – which costs about 20 baht per person, depending on the distance. For those in the mood for a little island hopping, speedboats or long tail boats are also available from Chalong Bay pier or Rawai beach in the south of the island. Individual tickets may be purchased or an entire boat may be chartered. Tickets can be arranged on arrival or as part of a package from a travel agent in Phuket.
There are many car rental services on Phuket. Cars or jeeps can be rented at the airport, in Phuket Town, and at most of the more popular beaches. Do keep in mind that while most international car rental agencies will offer you a full-overage insurance, while some local companies may or may not. Another option would be to rent a bike, but for around 150 to 300 baht per day you can hire your own 100-150cc motorbike, which will typically require you to leave your passport as a deposit.
Be sure to inspect bikes before rental, put on a helmet, and drive with extreme caution as rental motorbikes are not normally insured and accidents are frequent. Regardless, inspect rental vehicles prior to rental and drive with caution, particularly as traffic in Thailand can be quite confusing. Motorcycles can be rented from rental agencies located on Rasada Road or from different operators at various beaches.

Thailand Sailing Catamaran Amadeus. Cabin Cruise to Phukets Southern Islands
A typical join in sailing cruise on the catamaran Amadeus sailing from Chalong Bay on a 6 day-5 night cruise to the Southern islands off Phuket:
Day 1 – Transfer from the airport or from your hotel to Chalong, where the ship is moored. At 10:30 AM, you can board the Amadeus and settle into your cabin. After an orientation by the Captain, the Amadeus sets off at 11:30 AM.
In about two hours, we will reach the Koh Mai Thon Island, where you can enjoy the warm, clear waters of the Indian Ocean.
Then you will have your first taste of our chef’s delicious cooking. After lunch, we will set sail again, this time for Ko Phi Phi Don. Tonsai Bay, the main bay in Phi Phi island is not a quiet and tranquil place
There you can wander through the streets, have a drink at a bar, or relax with a massage. In the evening, enjoy a wonderful dinner aboard the ship. This will be our first overnight location.
Day 2 – Anyone feeling energetic to walk to the viewpoint? One needs to go early, before it gets hot and the steep steps will get you out of breath, but you will be rewarded with an amazing view of the two large Bays.
You will return to the yacht and breakfast will be waiting for you before we set sail for Kantiang Beach in Ko Lanta, This is one of the larger islands and it offers great beaches and the island is covered with natural forests inviting you for a scenic walk to a water fall. After you return, we sail a bit further South to a secluded anchorage and here we have a great small restaurant with excellent Thai cuisine. This will give you the chance to eat out for a change and experience real Thai hospitality. (The dinner and drinks on shore are not included in the price)
Day 3 – On this day, breakfast will be served while we sail. Our destination: Ko Muk Island.
Here you can visit the Emerald Cave, where a breath-taking surprise awaits you.
Once again, we will hoist our big sails, and with good wind, we should reach Ko Rok Nok Island in about two hours. This area is world-famous for its snorkeling and diving, and it boasts the most beautiful beach of the Andaman Sea.
The water is crystal clear, and the range of sea life in the Coral Sea will amaze you. In the evening, we’ll set up a barbecue on the white sand, which you can enjoy under a beautiful sunset.
Day 4 – You really won’t want to leave right away. Before we set off, make sure to take one last dip in this gorgeous natural setting.
On the way to Ko Phi Phi Leh, we will stop for more snorkeling at Ko Ha. You might be able to catch some tuna for very fresh sashimi along the way.
Just in time for a spectacular sunset, we arrive at Maya Bay. This is where the film “The Beach” was shot. The bay’s main beach is closed at the moment to give the reef a chance to recover from over tourism, but we are still able to pick up a mooring and stay at this spectacular place for the night.
Day 5 – At seven in the morning, the world is just waking up. Enjoy a fresh cup of coffee as you contemplate the morning light in Maya Bay. We depart before breakfast to another secluded place on the West coast of Phi Phi Don, enjoy the snorkeling and breakfast there and you can try the SUP or grab a kayak to paddle to the beach.
Later we set sail and depart for Ko Racha Yai, with the hope to spot some bottle nose dolphins which are regulars in that area. Again, the waters there are crystal clear inviting you for a swim and snorkel. We have several anchorages to choose from, all of them feature stunning beaches.
Day 6 – After breakfast, the ship will take you back to Phuket’s Chalong Bay. We will arrive around noon, and you will disembark with unforgettable memories. Of course, we will make sure get you to the airport on time, or take you to your hotel.

The Big Buddha is one of the most important landmarks on the island of Phuket. The Buddha's huge image sits on top of the Nakkerd Hills between Chalong and Kata. And at 45 metres tall, it can be seen from as far away as Phuket Town and Karon Beach. At the top offers the best 360-degree views of the island, with sweeping vistas of Phuket Town, Kata, Karon, Chalong Bay and more. It is easily reachable via a winding 6-km road leading from Phuket's main artery route.
