Welcome back Thai food fans, today we hit Victory Monument, Bangkok’s most iconic round a bout. The area is not only well know for epic traffic jams, but also for being a hotspot for street food. Most notable the tiny bowls of boat noodles that cost a few cents on the dollar, each. To help me throw down a few I’m joined by TJ who has a rapidly growing youtube channel where she posts great travel videos from all over the world.
Each boat noodle bowl costs 12 baht or $0.33 per bowl! That's ridiculously cheap, but in the past they cost even less, so the small portions hardly matter to hungry diners. Boat noodles are the style of blood broth noodle hailing from the era when most of life in Bangkok centered around the canals (aka khlong) that run through the city. Floating food vendors were common and the noodle stalls used small bowls they could pass to customers on land easily. So much has changed since then, but in order to show their authenticity to toward to the original way of making them, many stalls today serve them in similarly small bowls.
You have a few to choose from, but our favorite was the beef bowl. You get to choose your favorite noodle with it and there are a couple of crunchy things like pork rinds and fried wontons that you can add to your bowl for more texture.
This stall may be the most popular in Boat Noodle Alley and is over 20 years old. The full name of the restaurant is Sood Yod Kwaytheeo Reua Pa Yak (ร้านสุดยอดก๋วยเตี๋ยวเรือป๋ายักษ์) and the place is furiously busy and definitely unapologetically noisy!

Philippines Food for a Cause - Aunty’s Secret CARROT RICE at Gawad Kalinga Village!

This is the final video in this Philippines food travel video series!
We took a trip to Gawad Kalinga Enchanted Farm, which is an entire village where some of the most underprivileged families in the Philippines are given a chance to use their unique creativity to foster businesses and improve their lives.
Along with my friend Anton from Our Awesome Planet ( we drove about 1.5 outside of Manila, to the farm. It’s a beautiful place, with friendly people, and many projects around the farm.
They have a restaurant, using all local ingredients, most of which are from the farm, a university training students to be their own agricultural entrepreneurs, and dozens of other businesses on the farm. There are even a few beverages made from local ingredients which are being marketed and sold on the commercial market in the Philippines.
After walking around the village for a few minutes, we headed over to an Aunty’s house who is known throughout the village for her cooking. They cooked a number of dishes, including her famous carrot rice, chicken curry, and fried bangus milkfish. All the Filipino food was delicious, but I especially enjoyed the carrot rice and the vegetables which were all so incredibly fresh and simmered down with coconut milk.
Not only was it an amazing home-cooked Filipino food meal, but spending some time and meeting people at Gawad Kalinga Enchanted Farm, was the highlight.

The Saint of the Slum
Bangkok, the capital city of Thailand, renown as the City of Angel but in reality not all people here live in paradise.
In the heart of the city, not far from luxury shopping malls and high rise buildings, there is a quarter of the poor where their living condition is much worse than one can imagine.
One US Catholic priest from Washington State who at first had a mission to convert slum people into Christianity moved in and found that converting the slum people should not be his priority. He set up the charity center to rescue the slum dwellers from hardship, particularly drag the street children out from illiterate and drug addictive and also providing shelters for orphanages and those who infected with HIV and AIDS.
Peter Sombooncharoen has a report from Bangkok.

STORYLINE:
Some 250 students from Krabi High School, the mainland location closest to the Phi Phi islands, arrived there on Friday to help clear rubble and debris in one of the areas worst affected by the December 26 tsunami.
The students are being given class credits to assist in the clean-up. They are expected to be employed for three-to-four days.
So far, the Thai military has been in charge of the clean-up and is coordinating the effort.
Other groups will also clean in the area where the students are, but the school's principal decided that the children needed to learn about taking responsibility and helping their community.
Meanwhile, life appeared to be slowly returning to normal in the resort of Phuket on Friday, almost two weeks after the tsunami tragedy.
But traders at the local fish market have noticed a drastic decline in sales.
The market - usually bustling with customers - was empty on Friday as many locals have stopped buying fresh fish.
Many are afraid to eat fish because they think they may have been feeding on the bodies of tsunami victims.
Vendors tried to reassure customers by pointing out their supplies did not come from the Andaman sea, but from the Gulf of Siam, where they believe there were no dead bodies.
Phuket is famed for its seafood and there is a whole area dedicated to such restaurants.

Kids learning at Tihar Jail Day care centre
The largest compound of prisons in South Asia, Tihar Jail is also known as Tihar and has a brand of their own by the name of TJ's! It is located around 7 km away from Chanakya Puri, west of New Delhi, India at Tihar village. The nearby area is called Hari Nagar. It is not just a prison but also a Correctional Institution. Its main objective is to provide useful skills, and educate the inhabitants so as to make them normal members of society. The prison is meant to strengthen the inmates' desire to improve by boosting their self esteem.
The inmates also manufacture products under the brand name of Tihar or TJ's. It was run by the State of Punjab until 1966 and was a maximum security prison but later the control was transferred to National Capital Territory of Delhi. Additional facilities were constructed in 1984 and it became the Tihar Prison.
The most liked Inspector General of the Tihar was Kiran Bedi who under her jurisdiction introduced a number of prison reforms, including changing the name to Tihar Ashram. Vipassana, a meditation program for both staff and inmates was also initiated by her. The Prison has yielded an inmate who has passed the Indian Administrative Service civil service examinations.
