Adventure: #87 Pickle Spring & Hickory Canyon
Chased some waterfalls at Pickle Spring and Hickory Canyon natural areas. Along the way I had a good hike, got to try out the new camera, and spend a great day in the woods.

*This trail has two short hiking trails offer good views of the area's distinctive bluffs and canyons. A one-quarter mile trail from the parking area leads to a steep-walled box canyon. Across the road from the parking area is a more strenuous, one mile trail that traverses the steep terrain through the sandstone forest. It also crosses a scenic creek in a few locations.*

There are several feeding canyons to the main Hickory Canyon, which is a State Park ten miles northeast of Farmington, MO in Ste. Genevieve County. Save Our Streams video
The Save Our Streams promo video is a short reminder about the importance of your participation in protecting our water quality. The clean stream in the video is the beautiful Pickle Springs Natural Area in Ste. Genevieve County, Missouri. It is a free flowing, clean, Ozark stream. The polluted stream in the video is Deer Creek, a suburban St. Louis stream that is a major tributary in the River Des Peres watershed that drains most of the St. Louis metropolitan region.
Jim Karpowicz of the Documentary Group from Columbia, Missouri and Tom Newcomb, of Technisonic filmed the video in high definition so that it would be compatible with large screen presentation and new high-def television. Randy Skylock with Technisonic edited the video. Mike Radentz did the amazing soundtrack. Clyde Ruffins provided the voice talent. We hope that you are inspired to join us in improving and protecting our Missouri creeks. Please learn more about the ways you can get involved at
Hawn State Park - Pickle Creek Trail, Whispering Pines Trail and Camping- Park Travel review
Hawn State Park is one of the most recommended parks in Missouri for hiking and camping. The Pickle Creek Trail is a Summer hot spot for swimmers and hikers alike. The Whispering Pines Trail is know to backpackers from all over the Ozarks and Southeast Missouri.
From the Park's website: Hills of stately pine and oak trees, sandy-bottom streams and sandstone canyons and cliffs create one of the most significant and scenic landscapes in Missouri at Hawn State Park. Located in western Ste. Genevieve County, the 4,956-acre park offers a special experience for anyone wanting to enjoy the splendor of nature. Geology buffs come to the park to see the number of exposed rock types; hikers love the park for its amazing trails; and bird watchers flock to the park for its variety of birds.
This amazing landscape offers a scenic and peaceful setting where visitors can camp, hike, picnic and enjoy nature. The park’s campground, beneath a canopy of lofty pines, includes both basic and electric sites. Picnickers can enjoy a quiet lunch at one of the many picnic tables that dot the sandy, pine-covered woodland floor. The best way to experience the park is on its trails, which range from a short walk to an overlook area to an almost 10-mile-long backpacking trail that is considered one of the best in the state.
We have several hiking videos from Hawn State Park and have always enjoyed this park. It is less than 2 hours from St Louis and well worth the drive.
On Happy Trails Hiking, you will find content focused on Park Travel, as well as living a healthy lifestyle. If you are interested in that content, please feel free to subscribe to our channel.

Chestnut Ridge Heritage Preserve Field Trip
In the shadow of Hogback Mountain in northern Greenville county lies Chestnut Ridge Heritage Preserve. It was clearcut several times before it came into state ownership. But with a little searching, and a lot of luck, we found quite a few big trees. We also found a lot of water...and the great variety of wildlife that comes with all those things.

St. Francois County 911/Ste. Genevieve County (Missouri) Case Study Video
In this video, Alan Wells, Director of the St. Francois County 911/ Ste. Genevieve County 911 consolidated dispatch center in Missouri discusses his agency’s experience with NICE. The center dispatches for 33 agencies including police, fire and EMS. Wells says his agency uses NICE solutions in both primary and secondary (backup) dispatch centers to record all phone lines and radio frequencies. NICE Inform is central to the agency’s quality assurance program and also essential for fulfilling records requests. The center relies on integrated screen recording for documenting how incidents were handled and to enhance its quality assurance program. Wells says that his records management team and quality assurance team both love the ease-of-use and robust functionality of NICE Inform.
