Pico Cao Grande in Sao Tome, Sao Tome and Principe
On a small island off the coast of Africa a lofty volcanic tower known as Pico Cao Grande looms dark on the horizon, like a fantasy landscape illustrating why mountains have often been mythologized as conduits between ancient divinities and earth.
The Pico Cão Grande (Portuguese for Great Dog Peak) is a landmark needle-shaped volcanic plug peak in São Tomé and Príncipe, in the Caué District of São Tomé Island in Parque Natural Obô de São Tomé. Its summit is 663 m above sea level, and it rises about 370 m over the surrounding terrain. The volcanic plug was formed by magma solidifying in the vent of an active volcano. The nearest village is Vila Clotilde, 3 km to the east. The district seat São João dos Angolares is 9 km to the east.
The first attempt to climb Pico Cão Grande was in 1975 by a Portuguese team of climbers, and the first successful climb was completed by a Japanese group of climbers. In June 2016, climbers Gareth Leah, from England, and Sergio Almada, from Mexico, established a new bolt-protected rock-climbing route on the peak. The pair spent four weeks on the peak producing a route which they named Nubivagant. The route is 455 metres in length and is graded F8b. They climbed all but three pitches clean. The route is both extremely long and technically very demanding, and their climb was plagued with difficulties, including snakebites and blown battery chargers. The most difficult portions of the climb are in the first 100 meters, after which the difficulty drops considerably.
The climb has since been completed by Americans Sam Daulton and Remy Franklin (August 1, 2018) following the first American ascents of Nubivigant and Cão Grande by Michael Swartz and Tyler Rohr.
The moss growing on the rocks due to high moisture content, and the presence of snakes, make the climb very difficult.

Pico Cão Grande means Big Dog peak is the planet vertical volcanic cone, a needle rises dramatically in the middle of the Obo National Park on the island of Sao Tome. Definitely one of the greatest tourist attractions of these African islands. The Pico Cão Grande has a height of over 300 meters above the surrounding terrain. The summit is located 663 meters above sea level and is often covered with clouds that give it an even more mysterious and shocking aspect. To accommodate such a resounding geologic shape as the eruption of the volcano whose crater is at the top of this peak had to be sudden, violent and very concentrated. Upon cooling, it left as a souvenir this column a kind of skyscrapers in the middle of the jungle.
It is very difficult to climb Pico Cao Grande. The walls of volcanic rock are often dampened by the dense fog and covered with slippery moss. Climb them is like trying to ascend a giant glass bottle. Also, to access its base must be traversed a difficult path through the jungle. A step full of ferns, vines and abundant snakes . These reptiles appear to be the masters of Cao Pico Grande. They have even come to colonize the summit.Sao Tome and Principe is a small nation composed of two islands in the Gulf of Guinea, off the African Atlantic coast. A little known but full of wonders and surprises like this tourist destination.

Overview
In the summer of 2018, an American climbing team completed a free ascent of the Pico Cão Grande tower in São Tomé & Principe. The trip was documented through photos, video, and 360 degree footage filmed with GoPro Fusion cameras. To the best of our knowledge, there is very limited 360 degree footage of climbing expeditions, particularly of remote and unique ascents.
The Climbing Objective
The climbing objective was to make the first free ascent of Nubivagant (“Wandering in the Clouds”), a 15-pitch, 455m route graded 5.13d/A0 up Pico Cão Grande. Pico Cão Grande is a volcanic tower on the island nation of São Tomé & Principe. At the time of planning and organizing the trip, a free ascent of Nubivagant would have marked the first free ascent of the tower, Pico Cão Grande. However, just weeks before arriving on the island, a first free ascent of the route and the tower was established by Spanish climbers and brothers Iker and Eneko Pou.
Shortly after the Spanish ascents of Pico Cão Grande, the U.S. team of Sam Daulton, Remy Franklin, Tyler Rohr, and Mike Swartz arrived on São Tomé, also hoping to free Nubivagant. Daulton and Franklin each freed every pitch, including a one-day onsight push from pitch five to the summit. All team members reached the summit, achieving the first American ascent of the formation.
Significance, History, and Context of the Route
The route was established and bolted in June 2016 by Gareth Leah and Tiny Almada. Leah and Almada did not complete a free ascent; they summited the tower, Pico Cão Grande, but they fell on each of the three 5.13 crux pitches. The technical difficulty, length of the route, remote location, tropical climate, and jungle setting make this climb an unparalleled challenge. Prior to Leah and Almada summiting the tower in June 2016, there were two known ascents of the tower. The first was primarily aid-climbing using ladders and hooks in 1975. The second was in February 1991 when Naotoshi Agata, Kenichi Moriyama, and Yosuke Takahashi established an 18-pitch, 400m, 5.10a/A2 route up the southeast buttress.

Sao Tome - Pico Cao Grande
São Tomé’s most famous natural attraction - an absolutely bizarre volcanic plug peak rising dramatically over 1000ft / 386m above the rainforest terrain. The volcanic plug formed when magma rose through a vent during an ancient eruption and then solidified. The erosion slowly destroyed the mountain, but the lava plug remained. It was first climbed by a Japanese team in 1975, after many failed attempts by the Portuguese. The Japanese however couldn’t descend back down and an emergency helicopter had to be flown from Gabon to take them down. It is a truly surreal site - like a nature-made skyscraper tower. Supposedly the entire base of the Pico Cao is infested with thousands of snakes making hiking to it a bit of a problem.

Mike and I drive to the airport in Tucson while telling you about an expedition we are going on this summer. Our objective is the first free ascent of Nubivagant (“Wandering in the Clouds,” 455m, 5.13d), a 15-pitch route up Pico Cão Grande (a volcanic plug in the jungle) established by Gaz Leah and Tiny Almada in 2016. The three hard 5.13 pitches haven't been free climbed yet, so we are going to São Tomé for two weeks in July/August 2018 to try. We will be joined by Sam Daulton, Tyler Rohr and Jacob Kupferman (photography). This is a quick introduction to the trip.

São Tomé and Príncipe, the least visited country in Africa - Highlights of São Tomé island
The African islands of São Tomé and Príncipe are nestled in the warm equatorial waters of the Gulf of Guinea and are often forgotten by most travelers. Over the last few years, the country has become a true paradise for eco-tourism with its expansive lush jungle, love for slow food, picture-perfect beaches, and jaw-dropping mountainous volcanic landscape.
The main island of São Tomé is full of incredible experiences: from the coastline shaped by immense pressure of volcanic activity (such as Boca do Inferno blowhole) and scattered with pristine sandy beaches, to steep vertigo-inducing basaltic spires (such as Pico Cao Grande) and ruined plantation houses (like Ribeira Ize). Perhaps the most mysterious experiences are found in the surrounding islets - sailing under the rocky Ilheu de Santana is definitely unforgettable. To top it all of, the people of São Tomé will charm all the visitors with their lively culture and unique cuisine.

O Pico Cão Grande, que se ergue no coração da floresta equatorial, ao sul da Ilha de São Tomé, não é apenas um gigantesco falo de pedra basáltica, é, indubitavelmente, uma das mais singulares maravilhas geológicas da terra: não tanto pela altitude mas pela forma e verticalidade. Quem o vir de longe, seja da clareira da floresta, seja a surgir da curva de uma estrada ou até a levantar-se nom meio de uma pequena reta, não pode deixar de sentir o pasmo de uma majestosa aparição, de ser tentado a contemplar, algo, que parece divinizar toda a natureza selvagem envolvente – Qual gigantesca testemunha, simultaneamente, terrena e cósmica! Ou qual expressão genuína de um monumento, erguido da terra, aos céus!
Seja de que ângulo for, de perto ou mais afastado, o Cão Grande é único no seu género: não há conhecimento de semelhanças no Planeta.
Daí o fascínio que exerce aos olhos de quem o contempla. Mas, sobretudo, o permanente desafio que se revela aos amantes da escalada vertical - Pessoalmente, pude viver tais emoções, sentir o grande prazer – misto de glória, apreensão e receio – de, com o Cosme Pires dos Santos (mas também graças ao apoio do Constantino Bragança e dos meus guias, do Sebastião e do Chico), desfraldarmos, no topo do seu cume, a Bandeira Nacional de São Tomé e Príncipe, depois de nas sucessivas escaladas, antes da Independência, termos erguido a Bandeira Portuguesa, trepando as suas vertiginosas faces, que se erguem aprumo no mais denso manto da selva verde. De sermos os primeiros seres humanos - pois há aves que lá nidificam – a pisar as rochas da sua monumental crista!
Já lá vão quarenta anos, todavia as memórias, permanecem ainda hoje tão vivas, tão vibrantes, como se o tivesse acabado de escalar – O que parecia custar aceitar era o não reencontro, a não partilha dessas mesmas emoções, com o valoroso Pires dos Santos – Mas, felizmente quis o destino que, finalmente, na tarde de 5 de Agosto, 2015, nos reencontrássemos, num abraço fraternal e amigo, tal como o testemunha o vídeo, gravado junto de sua casa, na companhia da sua mulher, e dois dos seus irmãos e do jornalista Adilson Castro.
Sei que várias equipas, de diferentes nacionalidades, o tentaram fazer, mas, pelos vistos, sem êxito. Por quanto tempo veremos o Pico do Cão Grande a sair emerso das brumas? Com a devastação da floresta tropical, para a produção do óleo de palma em larga escala, as chuvas um dia poderão acabar, pondo em risco o Parque Nacional Obô. Um dia o Sul da Ilha poderá ficar devastado como o Norte, onde impera o Imbondeiro, dificultando as condições de sobrevivência do homem na Ilha.

Projet HUP à Sao Tomé & Principe
Entre 2014 et 2017, avec le soutien du Fonds fiduciaire africain de solidarité, la FAO a mis en œuvre le projet portant sur « la sécurité alimentaire renforcée en milieu urbain en Afrique Centrale grâce à une meilleure disponibilité de la nourriture produite localement ». A Sao Tomé, le projet a contribué à relever le niveau de productivité des exploitations horticoles sélectionnées. Les profits des bénéficiaires se sont accrus, et la qualité de leur vie s'est améliorée. Plusieurs emplois ont été créés en zone urbaine et péri-urbaine, et ce, tout le long de la chaîne de valeur. Enfin, l'offre en fruits et légumes de qualité s'est accrue sur les marchés citadins où elle faisait défaut.

NUM QUASE FIM DE TARDE - Recordações de histórias do Pico Cão Grande, de caçadores de porcos e de heroicas provas de sobrevivência de pescadores - Quem for a S. Tomé, com intuito de conhecer as suas mais belas paisagens e maravilhosas praias, dificilmente deixará de ir ao Sul - Existe uma estrada alcatroada, que lhe proporcionará as mais fascinantes surpresas, e é das melhores vias, atualmente existentes na Ilha - Umas vezes, lado a lado com o oceano equatorial, outras, com as curvas mais imersas pela florestas, sim, há muitas curvas e contracurvas, esse é o desfio com o qual tem de saber lidar o viajante de carro, mas é um desafio deveras aliciante e encantador.
No meu caso, ir ao Sul, 40 anos depois de meus olhos terem deixado de contemplar o Pico Cão Grande e toda a majestosa floresta do obó envolvente, impunha-se como que uma peregrinação sagrada e obrigatória – Mas eu ainda fui mais a sul, pois descoloquei-me até à Vila Malanza, graças à cortesia de bons amigos - o português, Manuel Gonçalves e, posteriormente, do Coronel Victor Monteiro.
E, por lá fiquei, não muito tempo, porque, no Equador, o dia começa cedo mas a tarde escoa-se rapidamente. Mas foi o tempo suficiente para ali passar uns momentos inesquecíveis, convivendo com velhos lobos do mar, caçadores de porcos e no meio de revoadas de alegres e risonhas crianças, trazendo à memórias as minhas as aventuras da minha escalda ao Pico Cão Grande e no mar – Veja o vídeo e verá como alegres e hospitaleiras são estas gentes do Malanza – De resto, cordialidade e simpatia, é apanágio de quem aqui nasceu e aprendeu a conviver com as mais deslumbrantes maravilhas da Natureza - Mais pormenores em
