Pico do Fogo: Volcano destroyed houses
Here you can see the eruption of the volcano Fogo during first days of December 2014. The village of Portela was destroyed during this eruption.
Strombolian eruptions and lava flows were erupted from the crater Pico Pequeno. After a few hours lava destroyed the visitor center in the Caldera Cha das Caldeiras. A few days later, more houses were destroyed. Finally, the lava reached the village Portela. It was buried almost completely under lava.
I filmed the destruction of some houses and made a timelaps from a house, which was floating on a lava flow. You can see close ups of the lava flows, strombolian eruptions and some slow motion of flying lava bombs, which were ejected close to me.
Backgorund:
Pico do Fogo is the most prominent volcano of the Cape Verde Islands. It is the highest peak of Cape Verde, rising to 2,829 metres above sea level. The 25-km-wide island of Fogo is truncated by a large 9-km-wide caldera that is breached to the east and has a headwall 1 km high. The caldera is called Chã das Caldeiras. Inside this caldera lies the village Portela. The residents do farming in the caldera
The volcano's slopes are used to grow coffee and wine, while its lava is used as building material.
The main cone last erupted in 1675. The only deadly eruption was in 1847 when earthquakes killed several people. A subsidiary vent erupted in 1995.

Aktuell:
Ende November 2014 ist der Pico-Pequenho nach mehr als 19 Jahren wieder ausgebrochen.
Die beiden Orte Portela und Bangeira wurden von meterhoher Lava bedeckt. Bis auf weiteres gibt es weder Übernachtungs- noch Versorgungsmöglichkeiten in der Caldeira.

Cabo Verde. Volcan Do Fogo
El Volcán Do Fogo es el pico más alto del archipiélago de Cabo Verde, situado en la macaronesia. Es un estratovolcán activo que se localiza en la Ilha Do Fogo y alcanza 2829 m sobre el nivel del mar.
El pico se ubica en el centro de una enorme caldera y en el interior de esta se encuentra Chas Das Caldeiras, una pequeña aldea donde sus habitantes viven de plantaciones de vid en las laderas del volcán. Desde el siglo XV ha tenido 28 erupciones y el cono principal se formo en la erupción de 1680, provocando la emigración masiva de la isla.
La ascensión, complicada por el desnivel y composición de sus laderas, la realicé en algo menos de cuatro horas con un descenso de noche y en solitario. Aún así y con mucha precaución, este es un volcán aislado pero muy atractivo a la vez.

Casi toda la isla de Fogo es un volcán activo cuya última erupción data de 2014. Exhibe una caldera de 9 km de ancho, con paredes de 1 kilómetro de altura. Esta caldera tiene una brecha en su borde oriental, y un gran pico se eleva en el centro. El cono central de se encuentra el punto más alto de la isla, y su cima es unos 100 m más alta que la pared contigua de la caldera. La lava del volcán ha alcanzado la costa oriental de la isla en tiempos históricos.
Una pequeña localidad, llamada Chã das Caldeiras, se encuentra el pie del volcán. Sus residentes son evacuados periódicamente, cuando se producen erupciones.

Stunning footage has emerged showing the eruption of a volcano on Fogo island, Cape Verde.
The eruption has wreaked havoc since it began on the 23rd November 2014 and is reported to have destroyed two whole villages and the homes of more than 1,000 people so far.
The combination of amazing timelapse and regular footage, shot between 30th November and 3rd December, shows the scale of the eruption in high definition detail.

A volcano has erupted on the Cape Verde island of Fogo, resulting in the evacuation of hundreds of residents and the closure of a local airport.
A huge plume of smoke, which was visible from a neighbouring island, started to rise from the Pico do Fogo volcano on Sunday.
Officials have said they think this eruption was bigger than the last one, which was in 1995.
The Cape Verde archipelago, which lies off the coast of West Africa, consists of 10 volcanic islands, eight of which are inhabited
