PLANE—SITE proudly presents the first in a series of ten short films, produced for the Pierre Boulez Saal, that chart the storied history and bright future of the remarkable new music venue in Berlin.
In our fifth video of the series, we have the opportunity to hear about the breadth and richness of programming (from Arab music to Jazz) planned for the inaugural concert season of 2017 from Pierre Boulez Saal director Ole Bækhøj.

Season 2019-20: Beethoven Piano Sonatas
Few musicians in the world are as intimately familiar with Beethoven’s Piano Sonatas as Daniel Barenboim, who has been exploring these works since the earliest days of his career. In 1960, at the age of 17, he first played all 32 sonatas in Tel Aviv. Through countless complete performances and three complete recordings, “his” Beethoven cycle emerged, which combines earlier and later sonatas in each program. Celebrating Beethoven’s 250th anniversary at the Pierre Boulez Saal, Daniel Barenboim for the first time presents these works in chronological order of their creation—providing an exciting look at the composer’s artistic development.

Nur wenige Musiker sind mit den Klaviersonaten Beethovens so eng vertraut wie Daniel Barenboim, den diese Werke seit den Anfängen seiner Laufbahn begleiten. 1960, im Alter von 17 Jahren, spielte er in Tel Aviv erstmals alle 32 Sonaten, seitdem folgten unzählige komplette Aufführungen und drei Gesamteinspielungen. So entstand „sein“ Beethoven-Zyklus, der in jedem Programm frühe und späte Sonaten miteinander kombiniert. Zum Beethoven-Jahr präsentiert Daniel Barenboim im Pierre Boulez Saal diese Werke nun zum ersten Mal in der chronologischen Reihenfolge ihrer Entstehung – und ermöglicht damit einen hochinteressanten Blick auf die schöpferische Entwicklung des Komponisten.

Der amerikanische Stararchitekt Frank Gehry hat den neuen Konzertsaal in Berlin entworfen. Und dabei dachte er insbesondere an Daniel Barenboim und sein Klavier. Künftig sollen hier bis zu 100 Kammermusikkonzerte jährlich stattfinden.

Fragmente: Eine Andere Art von Liebe
Für Brody beinhalten Weberns Kompositionen eine besondere Form der direkten Emotionlität, die sich in seinen primären kompositorischen Elementen der Kürze, Klangfarbe und musikalischer Textur ausdrücken. Um die Bandbreite von Weberns Werk aufzuzeigen, suchte Brody Fragmente aus den Briefen des Komponisten aus, die ebenso von der künstlerischen Suche nach der Tiefe des Klangs erzählen, wie auch sein menschliches Streben nach der Akzeptanz in seinem Umfeld aufzeigen.
Paul Brody lies diese Teile der Briefe einsprechen und transkribierte die Sprachmelodie - eine von Brody entwickelte Methode, um die Musikalität in der Stimme eines Sprechers als Ausgangsmaterial für Kompositionen nutzen zu können.
Die Tonreihen, die er mit dieser Technik ableitet, sind stark beeinflusst von der Zwölftonmusik Weberns und dessen Lehrer Arnold Schönberg.
In diesem Projekt ist Brodys Stimmen-Melodie-Komposition ein Art musikalische Skizze - ähnlich einer Bleistiftzeichnung, die ausgemalt werden kann mit den musikalischen Farben und Texturen aus Weberns Werk. Während die gesprochenen Fragmente der Briefe ein Narrativ kreieren, vermittelt die geloopte und gesampelte Musik die Essenz von Weberns Klangvorstellung.

Eine Zwölftonreihe bereist die Welt
Im zweiten Teil der Soundinstallation konzentriert sich Brody auf die Idee von Raum und Grenzen in Weberns Musik. So erfuhr der Komponist in der ersten Dekade des 20ten Jahrhunderts zunächst die radikale Verschiebung von musikalischen Grenzen, und später dann den Zusammenbruch aller sozio-politschen Grenzen nach zwei Weltkriegen. Die letzten zwanzig Jahre seines Lebens und damit seiner Arbeit widmete er dem strengen Regelwerk der Zwölftonreihen, die Brody als eine Art akustische Heimat erkundet.
Brody schickte die elementare Zwölftonreihe aus Weberns Konzert für neun Instrumente, Op. 24 an Musiker quer über die Welt verteilt, wie zum Beispiel nach Buenos Aires, San Francisco, Warschau oder Berlin - wo Paul Brody 25 Jahre gelebt hat. Die dort ansässigen Musiker, variierend von einem Schulchor aus Toronto bis hin zu etablierten Solisten wie Elliott Sharp und Roy Nathanson, waren eingeladen, die Tonreihe zu interpretieren. Die Aufgabe hierzu: jedes Instrument und jedes Tempo innerhalb einer Minute ist erlaubt.
Die eingesandten Interpretationen der Musiker beinhalteten Gitarren und Cellos, aber auch einen Traktor, ein Telefon und eine LKW-Hupe. Obwohl es Brodys ursprünglicher Gedanke war, die einzelnen Interpretationen sequentiell abzuspielen, entdeckte er in der Arbeit mit dem eingesandten Material, das manche miteinander harmonisch klangen und andere durch Überlappung eine Dialog formten.

Arabic Music Days 2019 - Nadira Mahmoud & Zaria Zardasht
As part of the Arabic Music Days, recent works by visual artists Zaria Zardasht (Syria) and Nadira Mahmoud (Oman) will be on display in the Mozart Auditorium of the Barenboim-Said Akademie.
Nadira Mahmoud is one of the leading visual artists of Oman—in 1993, she founded the country’s first art gallery in the capital, Muscat. Her works have been seen throughout the Arab world and in many European countries. Mahmoud’s simple, clean imagery draws on her perception of Omani topography and its colors.
The most recent paintings by Zaria Zardasht bear cryptic titles consisting of numbers and letters: they are geographic coordinates referring to cities the artist has lived in in the past. All these places have left traces in her memory in the form of colors and images, which Zardasht transforms into expressive paintings—like emotional satellite images of her life’s journey.

Edward W. Said Days 2019: On Counterpoint
Edward W. Said saw music as a way of embracing the contradictions of everyday life. It was central to his work as a scholar, and he used it as a way to describe the non-musical. For him, counterpoint—the combination of two or more musical voices that are harmonically interdependent, yet melodically and rhythmically independent—was a fundamental metaphor for describing life’s complexities. Join the Barenboim-Said Akademie in its yearly celebration of Said’s life and work: an interwoven exploration of counterpoint through lecture, concert, and discussion, curated by the Dean of the Akademie, Prof. Dr. Mena Mark Hanna.
Students of the Barenboim-Said Akademie from different courses and programs explain the meaning of counterpoint, the way in which Edward W. Said used the concept, and their personal experiences in counterpoint.

Season 2019-20: The Queen Commanded Him to Forget
Director Ofira Henig—most recently seen in Berlin with her productions The Bees’ Road and KIND OF at the Schaubühne’s Internationale Neue Dramatik Festival—and actor-dramaturg Khalifa Natour have developed a new piece for the Pierre Boulez Saal that blurs the boundaries between theater, music, and poetry and between different cultures. The Queen Commanded Him to Forget is based on a novel by Lebanese writer Elias Khoury and also draws inspiration from Brecht’s Mother Courage, Mahler’s Kindertotenlieder, and the tale of Hansel and Gretel. At the center of the story is the character of Umm Hasan, who will do anything to protect her children in times of war. The piece explores the role of literature as a preserver of memory and as part of a process that eternalizes forgetting.
