Kayak Tour, Little Pigeon River, Pigeon Forge, TN 2011-08-08, Wilderness
Some rain brought the river up to an acceptable level for kayaking, but also added a little surprise! When we reached that point on the cruise where we had stopped video recording on the last trip 08-02, we discovered a man-made waterfall attributed to of all things..............., the Titanic!
We put in behind The Track (go kart track) located at the intersection of the Parkway and Wears Valley Road. The water flow at that point will pretty much dictate the entire route. Look for steady flowing rather clear water. Most of the route in basically waist deep but if the water level is low, there may be some areas requiring a 'walk-thru'.
Take out and parking at (1) the Apple Barn restaurant (2-hr float, Apple Valley Road at the Parkway) or (2) TGIF restaurant (3-hr float, the bridge at Collier Drive in Governors Crossing shopping center). There may be trolley service back to The Track, check with the Pigeon Forge Dept of Tourism for schedule.

breakfast, lunch, or dinner at tables that overlook the Little Pigeon River as it flows through the water wheel of our 200-year-old mill. Wholesome ingredients, time-tested recipes, and well-honed home-cooking skills are the hallmarks of real Smoky Mountains cooking, and the ones that keep the rambling dining rooms at The Old Mill Restaurant fried chicken, buttermilk biscuits, fall-off-the-bone tender country ribs, and other Southern classics.
A unique history. 1786 A westward-moving settler, Mordecai Lewis, leaves Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley and settles in East Tennessee. John Sevier, the first governor of Tennessee, encouraged Virginians such as Lewis to come to this area following the Revolutionary War. In 1794, he was appointed Coroner of Sevier County as well as a Justice of the Peace.
1807Lewis makes his home along what we now know as the Little Pigeon River after receiving a land grant from Governor Blount, where he acquired a total of 151 acres along the river. His grandson would later build and operate the first gristmill.
1817 Issac Love, the son-in-law of Mordecai Lewis, inherits the land after Lewis’s death and builds an iron forge along the west branch of the river. It was a logical setting for a forge. Iron ore was found in the hills, timber could be burned to create charcoal to fuel the fires, and the river was a source of unending power for the large hammer. 1841 the first post office is located inside the mill. “Pigeon Forge” was born, named by Love after the passenger pigeons that would roost in the trees along the river during their southern migration and his father’s iron forge.
1859 John Sevier Trotter becomes the second owner of the mill and iron forge and adds a saw mill to his operation. 1861 The Civil War begins. Tennessee is the last state to secede from the Union. East Tennessee, in particular, was split between the Union and Confederacy. The mill owner, John Trotter, was a Unionist, and on the second floor of his mill, he sets up secret knitting looms to produce clothing for Union soldiers. There was also a makeshift hospital on the third floor. 1921 the mill begins producing electricity for the community. Not until 1933 did electricity flow to Pigeon Forge from the city of Sevierville. 1940 President Franklin D. Roosevelt dedicates the Great Smoky Mountains National Park at Newfound Gap, the mountain pass located in the center of the park and the name of the road that runs through the park today in both Tennessee and North Carolina. Tourism really starts to take off for the Great Smoky Mountains.
1952 Tourism begins to flourish in Pigeon Forge, the city widens the parkway to make way for more automobile traffic.
1961 Pigeon Forge incorporates as a municipality.
On June 10, 1975 the Old Mill is recognized for its importance to the community and its place in American history by being placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
1977 Only after 147 years of use, the Old Mill’s original grinding stones need replacing. They certainly were a good purchase back in 1830!
1995 The Stouts decide to retire and offers to sell The Old Mill to the Blantons & Frizzells. The Cornflour Restaurant name is changed to the Old Mill Restaurant.

The city of Gatlinburg and nearby communities are being evacuated due to wildfires. Nobody is allowed into the city at this time. The Sevier County Emergency Management Agency said if you are currently in Gatlinburg and are able to evacuate, evacuate immeidately and follow any instructions from emergency officials. Three county school buses are available in Pigeon Forge for emergency transport and are being dispatched as needed to transport those who need to evacuate. Gatlinburg residences are encouraged to evacuate using Highway 321 to evacuate. Gatlinburg fire officials have declared an immediate mandatory evacuation of the Mynatt Park, Savage Gardens, East Foothills Road, Turkey Nest Road, Davenport and Ski Mountain areas.Evacuation centers were set up at the Gatlinburg Community Center and Rocky Top Sports World. Great Smoky Mountains National Park officials reported fire activity at the Park Headquarters area and a spot fire between Elkmont and Newfound Gap Road off of the Sugarland Mountain Trail approximately 1 mile south of the Husky Gap Trail intersection. The park has closed the Gatlinburg Bypass and Little River Road from Sugarlands Visitor Center to Metcalf Bottoms Picnic Area due to fire activity and downed trees. The park has evacuated employees from the Elkmont and Park Headquarters housing areas. The southbound lanes of the Spur from Pigeon Forge to Gatlinburg are also closed due to fire activity. It's very dangerous weather conditions, said Dana Soehn with the National Park Service. We've had trees coming down, limbs coming down and the fire is continuing to grow. Evacuation centers were set up at the Gatlinburg Community Center and Rocky Top Sports World. Fire officials report that fallen trees have sparked multiple fires from fallen power lines, said Cindy Ogle, city manager for the city of Gatlinburg. Fire agencies from multiple agencies are responding to the area fires and I can't express enough the city's gratitude for the assistant with the National Park.
Situation Update No. 2 on November 29 2016 05:46 AM (UTC)
The Tennessee Emergency Management Agency has issued a Level 3 State of Emergency due to Sevier County wildfires that have prompted evacuations in Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge and other areas. The National Guard is being deployed to help efforts. Evacuations are underway in downtown Gatlinburg, Mynatt Park, Park Vista and Ski Mounty in Gatlinburg. Pigeon Forge's mayor also issued a mandatory evacuation Monday night for people in the area between The Spur and Traffic Light Number 8. The wildfire is also at the edge of the Dollywood property, TEMA reported. WBIR reported Dollywood DreamMore Resort is being evacuated due to the fire. The station also reports that so far, no structures have been damaged and crews are on-site to protect the structures. A command center has been established at Gatlinburg City Hall. TEMA officials are asking people to stay off their mobile devices unless it's for emergency calls, to prevent taxing the mobile system. As of about 10:15 p.m., 30 structures were on fire in Gatlinburg, including a 16-story hotel on Regan Drive, and the Driftwood Apartments reported a fully-involved blaze near the Park Vista Hotel. Several county schools are closed Tuesday due to the fires.
