Mr. P. Explores... The Abandoned Pennsylvania Turnpike (Breezewood, PA)
Thirteen crumbling miles, two long tunnels, several very old bridges, a lost travel plaza, and a labyrinth of dank, dripping and dark maintenance tunnels: In this extended-length episode of Mr. P. Explores, we head to the central Pennsylvanian interchange town of Breezewood to investigate part of the oldest interstate highway in the United States, the Pennsylvania Turnpike. In the 1960's, large stretches of the original turnpike were rerouted to avoid the too-small-for-growing-traffic tunnels along its path, and the old route was left to nature, which makes it a perfect spot to explore! We'll go into those same tunnels, walk their length, climb up into the damp maze of walkways, stairwells, air exchangers and maintenance access tunnels, and you get to come along for the adventure! So, kick back, press play and enjoy the trip along the abandoned Pennsylvania Turnpike!

Abandoned PA Turnpike East End
There is a section of abandoned PA Turnpike between Pump Station Road and Little Egypt Road about .9 Miles in length. It is still closed to the public yet should be opened as part of the 'Pike 2 Bike' trail.
Biking Abandoned PA Turnpike
In late July, 2019, I traveled to Breezewood, Pennsylvania, to bike a stretch of the abandoned PA Turnpike. In 1968, the PA Turnpike was re-routed, and a 13 mile section of the highway was left completely abandoned, including two tunnels. Today, the abandoned highway is technically closed to the public, but the area is signed Enter at your own risk. The post-apocalyptic feel of the abandoned road makes for a very interesting visit. See link below for more detailed information. Thanks for watching!

Eaten alive in Breezewood
I went to the Abandoned PA Turnpike (starts in Breezewood, duuuuh) in May 2015, and let's just say that I navigated some singletrack, got two inopportune flats and got eaten alive all on a road bike just wanting to explore some glorious highway history (and get some training in, of course.)

Gateway Travel Plaza in Breezewood, PA
This is the Gateway Truck Stop in Breezewood, PA. It's at exit 164 on the Pennsylvania Turnpike (I-76/70). This truck stop dates back to sometime in the thirties, just about when the Pensylvania Turnpike was built. The Pa Turnpike, or the Penna Pike as some people call it was the first modern paved toll road in the world. It should be noted that TA doesn't own this truck stop. The Gateway is one of my four most favorite truck stops in the US. The other three are the Iowa 80 in Walcott, IA, Trails Truck Stop in Albert Lea, MN, and the Jubitz Truck Stop in Portland, OR.
The Trinity Trail Trekkers do the Pike2Bike and part of the GAP
On June 28, 2012 the Trinity Trail Trekkers put 300 miles on their cars to do 17 + 22 miles on their bicycles. The Pike2Bike is an 8 1/2 mile stretch of abandoned Pennsylvania Turnpike that includes a .7 mile tunnel and a 1.3 mile tunnel both built in 1885 for a railroad that was never completed. They were used by the turnpike from 1940 to 1968 when the turnpike bypassed them.
Then they drove to Confluence, PA for dinner at the Rivers Edge Cafe followed by another bicycle ride to Ohiopyle on the Great Allegheny Passage for ice cream. A great day was had by all.
The beginning of the clip was filmed in movie digest mode that I was trying out for the first time. The rest is in regular video mode.

US 1 Northbound (47th Street to I-76)
U.S. Route 1 (US 1) is a major north–south U.S. Highway, extending from the Florida Keys in the south to the Canadian border in the north. In the U.S. state of Pennsylvania, US 1 runs for 81 miles (130 km) from the Maryland state line near Oxford to the New Jersey state line near Trenton, through the southeastern portion of the state. The route runs southwest to northeast, and serves as a major arterial road for many of the suburbs in the Delaware Valley area. South of Philadelphia, the road mostly follows the alignment of the old Baltimore Pike. Within Philadelphia, it mostly follows Roosevelt Boulevard.

THE TURNPIKE NEEDS OUR HELP. THERE WAS A MEETING REGARDING POSSIBLE FUNDING TO HELP BRING BACK TO LIFE THE ABANDONED TURNPIKE TO USE AS A RECREATIONAL TRAIL BY MEANS OF REPAIRING AND MAINTAINING THIS STRETCH.
ALL WE NEED TO DO TO HELP THIS ALONG IS WRITE A LITTLE BLURB ABOUT HOW YOU FEEL ABOUT THE PIKE AND HOW YOU THINK IT WOULD BE A GOOD IDEA TO FIX IT UP AND COULD CREATE A TOURIST ATTRACTION.
IF YOU CAN DO THIS AND EMAIL IT TO ME I WILL BE SURE IT GETS SENT TO THE RIGHT PERSON TO HELP MOTIVATE THE LOCAL GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS TO SEE HOW IMPORTANT THIS NATIONAL TREASURE REALLY IS.

My wife and I made the trek down to the abandoned section of the Pennsylvania Turnpike. We had a chance to explore the tunnels again and I brought along my Phantom drone to get some great aerial shots so be sure to look for that video.

Interstate 70 WB Breezewood to I-76 (Penna Turnpike)
This is a video I shot in August of 2014, showing a drive on I-70 Westbound from just before the intersection with US Route 30, to driving onto the WB Pennsylvania Turnpike (I-70/76). This is one of the few sections of Interstate highway that has a traffic light (in this case multiple). A direct connection from I-70 to the Turnpike has never been built, so drivers heading from the turnpike to I-70 or vice-versa must briefly drive on US 30 and go through a few traffic lights before continuing onto the highway. It is frequently congested (as can be seen in the latter half of the video) and can be a pain to navigate around the holidays or the busy half of summer, but it allows for businesses to do very well on this short stretch of Route 30. I don't see a direct interchange being built any time soon. Another interesting fact is the exit ramp from the mainline Turnpike to US 30 (which we travel on towards the end of the video) is actually part of the original Turnpike, which was bypassed over 40 years ago. The bypassed section is not used beyond US 30, however bicyclists are free to travel on the abandoned section at their own risk. The 13-mile abandoned section goes through two tunnels, and passes the remains of a travel plaza. PTC used it sometimes to test construction vehicles and reflectors, so you will find random painted lines and rumble strips in some spots. The PA State Police also used it as a shooting range, and the abandoned section was used in filming several parts of The Road. Maybe someday I will bring my camera and a bike to show you guys this abandoned section.
Alright, enough rambling, just thought I'd show you these two interesting parts of Pennsylvania's highways.

Sideling Hill Tunnel Riding thru eastbound 19OCT12
It was my first time of going on on the Pike 2 Bike Trail section of the Abandoned Pennsylvania Turnpike and of course going through the Sideling Hill Tunnel. While going through the tunnel I decided to be silly and imitate a Detroit 6V92 in a bus that would have been equipped with an automatic transmission and shout honk-honk beep beep at those who were going the other way through the tunnel. It was fun to say the least.
