Fun Ride on Gold Wing up Pikes Peak to Summit
On June 18th during our bucket list ride around the western states Cindy and I took a day on our schedule to ride our 2008 GL1800 Gold Wing to the top of Pikes Peak. It was a terrific ride, technically challenging as a rider taking the big bike to the peak and also plain awesome in terms of scenic beauty!
We left Pueblo, our base of operations, early in the morning in order to take advantage of the calm morning weather. Heavy thundershowers were forecast for the afternoon around the mountain and in the Colorado Springs area. Our bike's GPS helped us locate the Pikes Peak Toll Gate after which there was no question of which way to go. A check with the toll gate attendant on road conditions was positive, the light snow shower from the past night left slush on the upper road, but it was clearing fast. Indeed by the time we reached the peak it was just water run-off on the road and some slush remaining in portions of the peak parking lot.
The ride up was absolutely beautiful. The road itself has very few road side rail guards so literally sections of the road would have a few feet of packed dirt to the road edge then a rather steep, impressive drop. In one section I suggested to my courier, my wonderful wife, Don't look to the right Dear!
Switchbacks on the road, particularly the inside lane on the tight, climbing turns on this near 1,000 lb bike were fun, requiring attention to maintain safety around the blind corners.
Run down the mountain seemed easier for us. For a good portion of the ride down we tracked behind two other motorcyclists. This was enjoyable and we had a brief chat after exiting the Toll Gate departing the mountain.
(Video has sections of time-lapse acceleration - so enjoy the ride!)

Mueller State Park near Colorado Springs is a great campground. We highly recommend it.
Because of its great location, we visited Pikes Peak and the Gold Belt Scenic Byway which consists of Shelf Road, Phantom Canyon Road and High Park Road, a loop back to the Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument which was amazing.
