Pilsen Chicago | The Worlds 10 Coolest Neighborhood's Pilsen
Pilsen Chicago | The Worlds 10 Coolest Neighborhood's Pilsen. The Pilsen neighborhood is a historically working class, residential neighborhood, and gateway for immigrants coming to the City of Chicago. The area was initially settled by Czech immigrants to the United States who named the district after Plzeň, a city in what is now the Czech Republic. PILSEN — Chicago’s Pilsen neighborhood is among 12 communities — and only two in the U.S. — featured in Forbes Coolest Neighborhoods Around the World list.
The list, compiled by a Forbes contributor, identifies neighborhoods in major metropolitan cities worth experiencing. Forbes emphasizes that the best way to really know a city is getting “out into the places where local life is really happening.”
The only other U.S. neighborhood recognized alongside Pilsen is Navy Yard in Washington, D.C.
Forbes contributor Ann Abel describes Pilsen as “a nest of cutting-edge culture and art” that features streets lined with galleries and walls decorated with colorful murals dating back to the 1970s.
“It’s been fostered by successive waves of Eastern European and Mexican immigrants, in addition to local artists and students, who have molded this fascinating area over the past century and a half,” the article reads.
The listing points to the National Museum of Mexican Art’s expansive art collection, which highlights the work of Mexican and Mexican-American artists, as well as the growing number of performance venues, art studios, and trendy bars “like the popular Punch House” among the neighborhood’s attractions.
Other cities included in this year’s list are Sants in Barcelona, Amsterdam Noord in Amsterdam, Getsemani in Cartagena, Maboneng in Johannesburg, Plekhanov in Tbilisi, Casco Viejo in Panama City, District 5 in Saigon, Keramikos in Athens, Seongsu-dong in Seoul, and Kalk Bay in Cape Town.

EPA: Historic International Harvester site identified as source of lead in Chicago back yards
Paul Roush of the EPA explains to a town hall meeting in Spanish and in English how investigators identified the historic site of the original McCormick Reaper Works, later International Harvester, as the source of lead contamination in the soil around the Pilsen neighborhood on the west side of Chicago.

~Environmental Protection Agency is asking owners of over 100 properties in a portion of the Pilsen neighborhood for permission to take samples in their yards and gardens for lead-contaminated soil.
~EPA has been investigating lead contamination in Chicago's Pilsen neighborhood since 2011, when it became involved with a cleanup at the former Loewenthal Smelter. Residents requested additional investigation into potential lead contamination given the area’s long industrial history.

Una mujer y su carrito
Claudia is 62 years old. She was born in Mexico, but came to the United States in 1995. Since 2003, she has supported her three children by owning and operating a food cart in Little Village.
The catch? Claudia's business is illegal, because Chicago bans street vending.
People want to buy Claudia's food. At one point, Claudia had five carts and a handful of employees, but because of steady police harassment she has had to cut back. If nothing changes, Claudia and other vendors will continue to operate in fear. They could be stripped of their livelihoods at any moment at the whim of the police and City Hall.

How Did Chicago Get Its Name
How Did Chicago Get Its Name - as part of the news series by GeoBeats.
Located on the shores of Lake Michigan, Chicago is the third biggest US city in terms of population. The Chicago metro area area is sometimes referred to as Chicagoland, but how did Chicago get its name? It got its name from the Miami and Illinois Tribes, who took note of the wild leeks, which grew on the riverbanks. Shikaakwa means striped skunk and was also used in reference to the leeks. Although spelled differently over the years, the French started using a version of the word as a name for what is now Chicago.
There is some confusion about why Chicago is also known as the Windy City. While it would seem self explanatory, it is disputed whether the nickname derived from the weather, or politics. The city did use this moniker to try and lure summer tourists to their shores in the 1860s and 70s, and its forecasts frequently include the temperature followed by cooler near the lake.
The name Chicago has been used in popular culture quite extensively including a musical and a movie based on the musical, and a rock band that led the US singles chart in the 1970s.

This is why Chicago is so messed up. Bad neighborhoods that look nice
Taking a bus ride through the Jeffery Manor. Which is a very dangerous neighborhood but as you can see it looks extremely nice. As I said before and I'll say it again Chicago is a big ass illusion
