The Manatees of Pine Island
Pine Island sits on the eastern side of the Indian river Lagoon near Merritt Island, Florida. The place seems very remote and in the presence of so many manatees, seems almost prehistoric. This paddle happened on the third day of the 2011 Florida Paddlers Rendezvous in October. We made no attempt to approach these gentle giants. We basically let the wind carry us in among them and they could approach or move away as they pleased.
