Pinnawala Open Zoo (also called Pinnawala Zoo) is a zoological garden in Pinnawala, Sri Lanka, which is situated closer to the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage. The zoo was opened for public on 17 April 2015. This is the first open-air zoo in Sri Lanka and second zoo in Sri Lanka after Dehiwala zoo.
The zoo is divided into two sections: the Sri Lankan zone and the World zone. Currently, the zoo is home for many native animals such as chital, lion, Sri Lanka Leopard, Purple-faced leaf monkey, Wild boar, Sambar, Asian elephant, and different endemic bird species. The leopard watching area is the largest of them all.

Pinnawala Zoo | Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage - River Bathing | Sri Lanka | 2017
On a wet Sri Lankan day, we visited the fairly new (still under construction and expanding) Pinnawala Zoo. Would be great to come back and visit once the Zoo is fully complete.
Since we were near the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, we thought we'd make a quick visit to see the Elephants bathing in the river. I never say no to seeing elephants!

Pinnawala Zoo - Kegalle
The National Zoological Gardens in Sri Lanka began its operations in 1936. The government took over the 11 acres of land that belonged to a German businessman Jhon Hargenbeck who had been using the area as a holding ground for animals before they were exported to Europe. In 1948 the government acquired more lands and the area was expanded up to 21 acres.
The Dehiwala Zoo had been widely recognized as a tourist attraction since it had a large collection of animals. However, its location in a fast developing suburb of Colombo, has posed a series of constraints that has limited its expansion and upgrading to meet the high standards expected of a modern zoo. Hence the zoo authorities were compelled to seek alternative solutions to the problems. As a result the brainchild for the Pinnawala zoo was born.
Pinnawala zoo & Elephant Orphanage
Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is an orphanage, nursery and captive breeding ground for wild Asian elephants located at Pinnawala village, 13 km (8.1 mi) northeast of Kegalle town in Sabaragamuwa Province of Sri Lanka. Pinnawala is notable for having the largest herd of captive elephants in the world. In 2011, there were 88 elephants, including 39 males and 49 females from 3 generations, living in Pinnawala.

Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, Sri Lanka 2012
The Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is a definite highlight of any trip to the central part of Sri Lanka. The name is a bit misleading because it is not only an orphanage but also a place where captive breeding of elephants takes place. Despite this, the place is awesome. Once again the entrance fee I remember was a bit steep but it was worth every penny. As soon as we arrived we saw elephants crossing the road going to the river for a bath. After gong into the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage we were also quickly treated to a view of the baby elephants that could be fed and then a big field where the elephants spend their days. After that we followed a herd of elephants down to the river, sat at a hotel and enjoyed watching the elephants at play in the water. It was an awesome and worthwhile experience and we highly recommend the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage to anyone who is traveling in the vicinity.
