Big Change Coming to The Honest Pint
By SEAN PHIPPS
From Our Partners at Nooga.com
When The Honest Pint opened in 2010, owners thought that a smoke-filled atmosphere would fit with the Irish pub theme they were establishing. But times have changed.
Beginning July 1, The Honest Pint will transition to a nonsmoking venue.
Matt Lewis is a local businessman who owns part of The Honest Pint, Mean Mug, The Terminal Brewhouse, Hair of the Dog and Beast Barrel. He said the upcoming change has been years in the making, but the recent success of the Big Chill's transition to a nonsmoking establishment at their new Cherokee Boulevard location helped ease any fears he had.
It's one of those scenarios where you see people, talk to people, see trends and look at how we're going to grow our businessand at some point, the scale tipped toward nonsmoking, Lewis said. Honestly, we talked about it before we opened, but we used Hair of the Dog as a business model.
But unlike Hair of the Dogwhich maintains a large outdoor patioThe Honest Pint is a fully enclosed space.
The location, 35 Patten Parkway, has been a smoking establishment for at least 21 years, including at the previous Parkway Billiards. But a cultural shift downtown, according to Lewis, has suggested the time to make a change is now.
Unfortunately, these decisions are always about 'how do we do this and upset the fewest people?' he said. The biggest thing that I want to get across to people is that we're not changing our identity. In fact, we're making sure to refocus being as true to our Irish pub identity as possible. We're just changing one little detail about what happens when you're here.
Although the news may be troubling for some regulars, the change offers new customersof all agesthe opportunity to enjoy the space. Currently, Tennessee's Non-Smoker Protection Act bans smoking in all restaurants unless a venue restricts access to anyone under the age of 21 at all times. As a nonsmoking venue now, Lewis said families will be able to enjoy The Honest Pint.
It's very encouraging how much positive feedback we get on the food, so we really want to build on that business, he said. I hope someday it'll change, but Chattanooga is not an adult tourism town

Made in Chattanooga: McGlaughlin Manufacturing
By: Latricia Thomas A Chattanooga company is helping the sailing standouts of tomorrow, learn to navigate the open water. McGlaughlin Manufacturing is the only maker of the Optimus sailboat in the United States. Newschannel 9's Latricia Thomas takes us inside their factory to show us how the boat for pint-sized sailors is made. For the past 30 years, the youngest racers setting sail have been hitting the water in a piece of Chattanooga craftsmanship. President Mike Sherman says, They are very surprised normally, that's the last thing they expect to find in Chattanooga, Tennessee is a sailboat manufacturer.Inside McGlaughlin Manufacturing, the Optimis Sailboat is their prime product. Some of the very best sailors in the world that sail in the America's Cup, Sherman says. Their beginnings were in this boat. The small, single-handed craft that teaches kids to captain their own vessel is cast in a mirror-image mold. The first thing we do is spray the molds surface, which has been waxed, with a paint called gel coat, Sherman says. Then comes the first layer of fiberglass. We will allow this to harden. The boats in these molds over here are actually ready to come out.Once it's out of the frame, it's on to the grinding room, where shaving the perfect shape and size is standard. Sherman says, What that does is it puts the competitive edge in the racer itself and not the boat. After a quick sand, it's time to put all the pieces together. That's where Danny English steps up to the bow. I'm the boat builder, he says. I actually build 99% of all the boats. Boats that put Chattanooga on the marine map, where Made in the USA means more than just a stamp on the stern. We actually import some boats from China, Sherman says. And they just aren't as good as ours.

Party bikes to offer pub tours of downtown Chattanooga
Two new companies plan to use pedal-powered party bikes to offer tours of Chattanooga pubs.
As many as 15 customers per bike will have the chance to pedal through downtown, guided by a sober driver.
If the businesses receive final approval from the city, Pints and Pedals and the Chattanooga Brew Choo will start business this week.
Each one will cost you about $25 dollars per trip.

Chattanooga Woodworking Academy Makes Craftsmen With Heart
Bill Carney considers himself a stern taskmaster. I make them do it right. I won't accept anything that's not really good, Carney says.
His 10 full-time students at the Chattanooga Woodworking Academy packed up and moved from 5 different states to learn his time-honored trade.
Dustin Clark moved here from Las Vegas. I spent my first ten years with a normal corporation kind of plugging away at that job and after ten years it just wasn't what I wanted.
So with years of woodworking under his belt, Carney took them in and taught them to carve, shave and sand.
My goal is to help them establish themselves as an expert in their field, with their hands, and become good citizens, Carney explains.
But along the way, he also taught them a bigger lesson: one wooden truck at a time.
I think its important that when you learn a craft you share it. And sometimes that means giving it away.
For more than 20 years, this father of 3 has made it his mission to make wooden trucks and give them to patients at Children's Hospital, usually dropping them off on Christmas Eve. Never even staying to hear a thank you.
But today, for the first time he's seeing his handiwork make it into these little hands.
A labor of love from one master craftsman to two decades worth of pint-sized patients, some who are fighting for their lives.
They feel loved by a total stranger, Children's Hospital Senior Child Life Specialist Lois Simpson says. Reaching out and doing something special and putting so much of their heart into a gift that they are giving to them to take home and keep forever.
