Pioneer Tunnel Coal Mine & Steam Train
Pioneer Tunnel Coal Mine & Steam Train is a 42-inch gauge narrow gauge steam operation in Ashland, Pennsylvania. They operate steam excursions on a 3/4 mile track, as well as mine tours into the old Anthracite mine. The excursions are powered by an 0-4-0T saddle tank switcher, a Lehigh Valley Coal Company engine from the Hazleton Shaft.
Don't forget to comment, like, share, and subscribe for plenty of great railroading action from all over the eastern USA.

Henry Clay Number Two Ashland Pa Pioneer Tunnel
A quick video clip of our number two engine. She hasn't been fired in about five years, but she is still roadworthy! We are hoping to do a complete overhaul in the coming years - I would love to see both engines out and under steam! She will be out for pictures on Jul;y 21st, 2013, but she will be cold.

Seldom Seen Coal Mine in Patton PA
Coal mining reflects the independent spirit of the region's people. Many southwestern Pennsylvania mines were small family run operations such as Seldom Seen Mine.
The mine was originally operated by mule haulage with the only electric piece of equipment being the pump. Around 1943 the first electric equipment, consisting of a locomotive w/storage battery, and a short wall cutter, was purchased and installed in the mine. The trolley system and conveyor system was installed in the late 1940's.
Since the closing of production in 1963, The Seldom Seen Mine has become a Tourist Mine and is now part of the Path of Progress.

Day Odyssey Series: Ride to Centralia PA
The next of our Baltimore-based Day Odyssies takes us (literally) into the twilight zone-the ghost town of Centralia PA! And, with a new camera, this one's a bit steadier than the previous ones!
And, as is my practice with these vids, we use off-the-beaten-path (and historic) routes. We begin on what was US 111 up until the early 1960s when it was demoted to MD 45, with stops in historic Parkton MD (with classic photos) and Shrewsbury, York, and Harrisburg PA, checking out railroads in those locations. We then make our way up PA 147 to another RR town-Sunbury, where we check out the Northern Central RY's station. The NCRY parallels most of our route. Hard to believe this is the EXACT SAME line I catch light rail on at Baltimore's Robert E. Lee Park!! But it is. (Built 1832 as Balto & Susquehanna; extended to Sunbury in 1860s and became NCRY)
From Sunbury east we follow PA 61 to Centralia-complete with fire burning below (but I wasn't about to go below to shoot it). We'll take a walk up the rerouted-then closed-PA 61 to the site of some fire damage from the coal mine that ignited in the early 60s, and is supposed to burn another couple hundred years!
We'll then cruise the town and have a look at the neighborhoods that are no longer. The plots where homes stood-and adjacent driveways, are all easily discerned! Sidewalks still line the streets. Incredible how this was once a thriving town before the fire below! One almost expects to see Rod Serling step out!
It's hard to do justice to this in a video (though many have tried); one must really go in person and experience this!!
On onr return trip we use interstares 81 and 83. Not too off-the-beaten-path, but after a long day out (and a bad back), I need a break!
Shot May 4 2014.
I asked where viewers wanted me to go in the next Day Odyssey...but no one responded! Guess I'll pick a place...

St. Patrick's Day in Girardville, Pa
Girardville in Pa is a small town, but its population doubles every year on the St. Patrick's Day when thousands arrive to participate in the traditional parade.

Sumner Park - 3/10/19 - The Drunken Monkey, Ashland, PA
Sumner Park hail from Berks County, PA, and as they describe themselve, play sad bastard music. I've seen these guys in, or actually as Suburban Losers and Home Movies quite often in shows we'd play in Pennsylvania's coal region, so it was cool to see what these guys have been up to. I set up the camera to get New Cult's set and decided last minute to leave it up for Sumner Park. Glad I did. So, if the angle is weird, that's my fault. Heh. Have a Sumner Park set. It's free. You should listen to new music. Cheers.
