Ken Tanaka is back. This time camping and fly fishing in Pisgah National Forest on the Davidson River in North Carolina. Camping with kids can be awesome but also difficult. Here are some great camping tips. I was taking my 4 year old out camping for the first time and this is a fantastic place to bring a little one. So many activities around that area. Fly Fishing, Pisgah Center for Wildlife Education, Bobby N. Setzer State Fish Hatchery, Pisgah Ranger Station, Looking Glass Rock, Looking Glass Falls and Sliding Rock. It's also close to Brevard and Asheville as well.
Parking for the campsite is at the Wildlife Education Center and the campsite is only a 5-10min walk along the Davidson River.

John Rock and Cedar Rock Falls - Pisgah National Forest, NC
Last hike of the day, so I decided to find something a little longer. I settled on the John Rock loop which includes Cedar Rock Falls. From the Pisgah Center for Wildlife Education I hiked the Cat Gap Loop Trail clockwise towards Horse Cove. From there I picked up the John Rock Trail gradually ascending the mountain. The exposed area of the pluton is on the northwest side rising hundreds of feet above the parking area. The cliff area provides phenomenal views of Looking Glass Rock across the Davidson River Valley. You also have great views of Pisgah Ridge further north and northwest, and can also see Pilot Mountain to the west.
I continued south on the mountain which seems to have much less traffic, then descended steeply to follow the Cat Gap Bypass Trail. Rejoining the Cat Gap Loop Trail it follows Cedar Rock Creek, crossing it multiple times. There are huge groves of pine trees here with fantastic campsites. I checked out Upper Cedar Rock Falls, which is nothing special. Then Cedar Rock Falls, which is really nice despite its lack of height. Overall a great moderate loop for views and waterfalls.

Protecting North Carolina’s Pisgah-Nantahala Forests (Extended Cut)
Pisgah and Nantahala are the two largest national forests in North Carolina. They are also the busiest, drawing an estimated 4.6 million people a year. How those public lands are managed matters greatly to the hikers, hunters, paddlers, anglers, mountain bikers, timber companies, and local communities who use the forest.
In the fall of 2015, a diverse group of stakeholders came together to identify areas of agreement around critical resource issues related to the Nantahala and Pisgah National Forests’ plan revision, which will direct management of the forests for the next 10-15 years. These forest users collaborated with the Forest Service to develop management recommendations that would provide protection for special places, enhance varied recreational uses, and manage for restorative purposes where needed to meet the needs of game and fishery habitats.

DANIEL RIDGE FALLS - Pisgah National Forest, NC

This waterfall in Pisgah National Forest near Brevard has multiple names: Tom's Spring Branch Falls, Daniel Ridge Falls and Jackson Falls. It’s an easy half-mile hike on the Daniel Ridge Trail to reach the base of this 150-ft. waterfall. As with many waterfalls, it’s most impressive after some decent rain. During summer dry spells, the flow is a tiny stream. You can either hike quick one-mile direct round-trip or the entire four-mile loop that includes the top of the waterfall.
It's just a few miles from the trailheads from two of our favorite hikes, Looking Glass Rock and John Rock. Nearby waterfalls include Cove Creek Falls (less than a mile away), Slick Rock Falls, Cedar Rock Falls, Log Hollow Falls, Looking Glass Falls and Sliding Rock. It's about 14 miles from the Blue Ridge Parkway, accessed from the beautiful Forest Heritage Scenic Byway (see directions below), near Pisgah Center for Wildlife Education.
From the small parking area, walk around the gate and follow the red-blazed (and signed) Daniel Ridge Loop Trail. Cross an impressive bridge over the Davidson River and follow the trail straight ahead (a riverside trail to the left takes you to some nice camping sites). At the fork of the loop trail, go to the right to reach the waterfall. If you hike the entire loop, this is where the loop ends. It’s an easy uphill walk along an old road to the falls. You can enjoy a view in front of the waterfall or take a short side trail up to the side of the falls.
If you want to continue the loop hike and go to the top of the waterfall, head back toward the car and you will immediately see the trailhead up the mountain on the right. The total elevation gain for the loop hike is 800 feet. The loop hike includes several other cascades along the river. Be sure to follow the red blazes to stay on the main trail.
Moore's Cove, Pisgah National Forest
This is an easy hike to a small waterfall, and in the spring the trail is lined with wildflowers. A short distance off the Blue Ridge Parkway on Hwy. 276, and just an hour's drive from Asheville.

Wildlife Resources Cuts
The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission faces possible budget cuts that could impact fishing in the western mountains. The State Senate approved a $9.5 million dollar reduction in funding. The House of Representatives is now considering the proposed reduction.Some of those cuts could be felt at the states fish hatcheries, including the Bobby Setzer Fish Hatchery in the Pisgah Forest in Brevard. The Hatchery's education center has already suffered cutbacks from last year's budget and was forced to close it's gift shop. Workers worry more cuts could result in reduced hours or reduction in fish production.The Hatcher now produces around 600,000 fish for stocking in Western Mountain streams that attract trout fishermen from around the country. The Wildlife Resources Commission estimates fishing in mountain streams brings in $174 million dollars to mountain counties. Fishermen and visitors to the Hatchery are disappointed about the proposed cuts and feel it would hurt the area's tourism industry. By Frank Fraboni

Trout Troubles
Fishermen/women may notice fewer trout in area streams this summer.
Scott Marsh, Assistant Superintendent of the Bobby Setzer State Fish Hatchery in the Pisgah National Forest, says they're stocking trout at only 50% of normal. The reason for the reduction? More than 60 federally protected Great Blue Herons have settled near the hatchery, and over the past year, have eaten about 1,000 trout a day. Marsh says hatchery workers tried to use sound and light deterrents to keep the birds away, before finally covering the trout ponds with fences.
With a shortage of 73,000 trout and many smaller trout needing to grow, Marsh says the decision was made to stock area steams at just 50% of capacity this summer. It's disappointing news for many, like Jared Edmonds who love to fish in WNC streams.
Marsh says fishermen/women will need to be more mobile this summer to catch their limit. But, he says the fences are keeping the birds away, and streams should be stocked to full capacity next summer.
