This route in Pisgah National Forest outside of Asheville, North Carolina, was probably the best ride of the road trip. Really fun mountain bike adventure the whole way through!

Riding Pisgah // Exploring Western North Carolina
For each volume of our photo book, we choose a destination that is a microcosm of highly renowned trails and Pisgah National Forest is no exception. However words and photos can only go so far, so in collaboration with our photo book, we continue the story here, talking with the locals and touring the riding destinations. While the trails are certainly one of the biggest factors of any mountain biking community, they would simply be dirt paths if it weren't for the after-work warriors, the local shop employees, the young groms, the advocates and the local brews. So welcome to Pisgah, a unique place of Southern charm, wild geography and serious mountain bike fanatics.

Riding Kitsuma in North Carolina • Pisgah Trip - Part 1 • The Duke of MTB
We couldn't wait for the spring thaw to end in Michigan, so in March we went to North Carolina to ride some of their awesome trails there. Kitsuma was the first trail we rode when we arrived. We also recently bought an Insta 360 One X as a secondary camera. I'm excited to try some different camera angles with 360 cam. Anyway, more vids from our trip to North Carolina will be coming soon.
Does anyone even read the description? I never know what to put here.

Winter Camping 101 - Pisgah National Forest
Shaphan, Tracy, Adam and I head up into Pisgah National Forest for a Winter Camping 101 Shakedown. Tracy and Adam have never camped in the winter. With this in mind, we head into the backcountry to get their winter camping on. We start with a tour through Wilson Creek Gorge area, a stop at Betsey's Ole Country Store and an unforgettable hotdog served by Sarah with an H. Continuing into the backcountry, we find a fantastic spot, dig a well at a spring head, start a fire in the wet forest and camp in the clouds. Tracy's trail name is born...We cap it off with breakfast with Shug at Famous Louise's! Come along and enjoy a great weekend in a majestic place!

Spencer Gap & Fletcher Creek Loop - Near Asheville, NC
Long easy climb up a forest road followed by a short traverse across Spencer Gap. Went straight into Spencer DH - Fletcher - then climbed up to Lower Trace Ridge to descend to the truck. A 14-mile loop with a good intermediate level mix of riding.
Black Mountain Pisgah, NC Ride (Thanksgiving Weekend Day 3) | ขี่จักรยานแบบโหดๆ
Vlog 010: Sunday November 26, 2017. Black Mountain Trail is rated as most difficult or expert ranking. There are a lot of drops and loose rocky sections. Lower Black is more playful with lots of rock kickers to get air off of and few chunky spots.
On the downhill, Trent started to have an issue with his derailleur (it came loose) and the chain twisted. He needed to pop the quick link on his chain to put it back together. He used a shoe string on the outside of the quick link to break it.

Getting a slice of humble pie at Bennett Gap in Pisgah, NC
Bennett Gap is another Pisgah classic, easily accesed by riding or shuttling avery creek road, and commonly done in combination with Buckwheat Knob, its a popular option when you're looking to get a short ride in with lots of variety. You'll find everything here, from super fast to very technical, all kinds of intermediate-advanced riders will love this one.
After you've gotten past the the first big downhill steps, the second staircase and the rooty trials like climb, the character of the trail changes drastically, you're all done with the technical descents and climbs and you're up for a much flowier section where you can play a bit more with some speed and letting the bike flow.
As you get closer to the bottom of the trail it flattens out a bit, just enough to give you a big confidence boost, this section can be ridden with long brakeless stretches making a great place to get some nice speed without the technical factor you have to deal with further up on the trail.
Overall this is one of the most fun trails I've ever ridden, it shows all of the Pisgah aspects in one place, the variety is a testament to everything you can find out here. If you're planning a trip to the area and you're up for some humble pie mixed in with your fun, you should make this a mandatory ride.
I will see you guys for next one and happy ridding!

Black Mountain and Avery Creek loop - Pisgah National Forest, NC
A hike on December 19, 2018 in the Pisgah Ranger District checking off a few waterfalls and trails for two CMC challenges. I began at the FR 477 gate beside U.S. 276 and hiked the road south to follow the Club Gap Trail. The trail switchbacks up towards Club Gap, and as I neared the gap a few inches of snow covered the landscape. From Club Gap I followed the Black Mountain Trail over Rich Mountain. This is where you'll see the first video clip of my new Silky F180 going to work on blowdowns across the trail. It turns out this folding saw came in handy later in the hike.
The Black Mountain Trail descends to Buckhorn Gap where a shelter is located, and then crosses FR 5058 before climbing up Clawhammer Mountain. Between Clawhammer Mountain and Black Mountain is the best view of the hike from southwest-facing cliffs. The lighting was mostly terrible for pictures and video. The plutons of Looking Glass Rock, John Rock, and Cedar Rock Mountain were due southwest, with Pilot Mountain rising behind. The notable peaks of Panthertown Valley were much further southwest. To the west and northwest were various peaks above the Blue Ridge Parkway, including Devils Courthouse and Black Balsam Knob.
After lingering at this viewpoint I bushwhacked to the summit of Black Mountain (4,286 feet), a P1K peak, then descended on the now heavily eroded trail to meet FR 5049. The forest road connects with the Pressley Cove Trail, which drops steeply to FR 477 near the Avery Creek horse stables. Following the road north I began the Avery Creek Trail, and immediately knew I was in for a long slog. I encountered a lot of blowdowns on this trail, and tried to saw through the bigger trees but there were simply too many and daylight was short. I'd estimate I encountered at least 50 unique blowdown sections, so I hope those have been taken care of since this hike. On this trail I got to see Avery Creek Falls and Upper Avery Creek Falls. I preferred the upper falls despite the deadfall at the base, without those logs it would be stunning. The climb out of the Avery Creek valley was steeper than expected, and I finished the Club Gap Trail in the dark. Overall this was a good loop providing a nice mix of water and views in a lesser utilized trail system of the U.S. 276 corridor.
Distance - 14.0 miles
Elevation gain - 3,730 feet
Time - 7 hours and 30 minutes

Mountain Biking One of North Carolina's Best | Black Mountain, Pisgah
Every mountain biking trip to Brevard isn't complete until you hit Black Mountain at least once.
Always stoked to get to ride Black Mountain in the Pisgah National Forest. It's one of North Carolina's most popular trails and for good reason. It's a blast. With gnarly and rooty terrain up top followed by really fast singletrack at the bottom its an awesome loop to do. Unfortunately my camera died on me before probably the most popular machine cut section of Black Mountain, Lower Black. Can't wait to get back out and run it all back. Mountain biking in North Carolina is always a great time!
