St Petersburg: Peter the the Great
The Russian man with the serious Russian plan! And a westward-looking one at that! Tsar Peter the Great founded his namesake city place back in 1703...but much more than just another city, this place marked a a cultural revolution that replaced the traditionalist Russian and medieval social and political system with a modern, scientific, Europe-oriented, and rationalist system...a east/west struggle for the country's soul that exists to this day!
Saint Petersburg City Guide: Peter and Paul Fortress - Travel & Discover
The Peter and Paul Fortress is the original citadel of St. Petersburg, Russia, founded by Peter the Great in 1703 and built to Domenico Trezzini's designs from 1706 to 1740 as a star fortress. In the early 1920s, it was still used as a prison and execution ground by the Bolshevik government.
Today it has been adapted as the central and most important part of the State Museum of Saint Petersburg History. The museum has gradually become virtually the sole owner of the fortress building, except the structure occupied by the Saint Petersburg Mint.

SAINT PETERSBURG - THE MOST BEAUTIFUL CITY OF RUSSIA
Hello Guys,
Click here to support my channel:
In this video, I have shared my experiences of St. Petersburg and I must say this was the most fantastic city which I have ever seen in my whole life. St. Petersburg is an amazing city, I have spent around two nights and one day.
Saint Petersburg (Russian: Санкт-Петерб́ург Sankt-Peterburg;) is a world-class destination and Russia's second largest city, with a population of more than 5 million perched at the eastern tip of-of the Baltic Sea and the Neva River.
The city was formerly known as Petrograd (Петрогр́ад), and later Leningrad (Ленингр́ад).
Founded by Peter the Great in 1703, in the territory of the Inkeri town of Nien which was a capital of Finno-Ugric province Ingermanland which was part of Novgorod Republic, and Sweden. The first settlements in this region date from 2500 years ago. Archaeologists found old graves full of short silver treasures. Also, Korea-inkeri epos of Kalevala half was written near Sester river, modern Sestroretsk. In this time the lifestyle of aborigines was very different it was forest people who lived in tunnels underground, famous for hunting, mushroom medicine, and making steel. It was the place of joining three finna Ugric subethnosos Suomi Inkeri and Karela, St Petersburg the former home of the tsars and the center of imperial Russian culture, Saint Petersburg was known as The Venice of the North in its heyday. Re-christened Petrograd during the first World War, the city was renamed Leningrad in 1924 in honor of communist revolutionary and founder of the Soviet Union, Vladimir I. Lenin. Bombed, besieged and starved during World War II, the city took a back seat to Moscow during the Soviet-era.
Since the collapse of the Soviet Union, the city has rapidly been making up for lost time and is by far the most cosmopolitan and Western of Russia's cities. Renamed once more in the aftermath of the fall of the Soviet Union, most Russians know it as Piter (Питер), a familiar diminutive of Saint Petersburg.
During the hardship years of Yeltsin's presidency, much of the city was controlled by the infamous Tambov gang, but have since reduced in influence. With world-class architecture, astonishing views and friendly people, there's lots to do here.

???? Nevsky Prospect by Night • ST. PETERSBURG | RUSSIA • TRAVEL • GUIDE
* More pictures in my google+ ツ
Nevsky Prospect is the main street in the city of St. Petersburg, Russia. Planned by Peter the Great as beginning of the road to Novgorod and Moscow, the avenue runs from the Admiralty to the Moscow Railway Station and, after making a turn at Vosstaniya Square, to the Alexander Nevsky Lavra.
The chief sights include the Rastrelliesque Stroganov Palace, the huge neoclassical Kazan Cathedral, the Art Nouveau Bookhouse, Elisseeff Emporium, half a dozen 18th-century churches, a monument to Catherine the Great, an enormous 18th-century shopping mall, a mid-19th-century department store, the Russian National Library, the Anichkov Bridge with its horse statues, and the Singer House. The feverish life of the avenue was described by Nikolai Gogol in his story Nevsky Prospekt. Fyodor Dostoevsky often employed the Nevksy Prospekt as a setting within his works, such as Crime and Punishment and The Double: A Petersburg Poem.
During the early Soviet years (1918–44) the name of Nevsky Prospect was changed, first to Proletkult Street (Ulitsa Proletku'ta) in honor of that Soviet artistic organization. Following the demise of Proletkult the name was changed again, this time to Avenue of the 25th of October, alluding to the day of the October Revolution.. (Quelle Wiki)

The Winter Palace of Peter the Great
The Winter Palace of Peter the Great is a unique architectural monument of the first quarter of the 18th century. The official residence of Peter I was located on the territory now occupied by the Hermitage Theatre. In the part of the palace which has been preserved, there is a memorial exhibition dedicated to Peter the Great and his time. In his rooms - the study, the dining room and the turnery - decoration has been recreated using genuine items that belonged to the Emperor. So-called 'Wax effigy,' a posthumous sculptural portrait of Peter I, has been also put on display.

Peter & Paul Cathedral, St Petersburg, Russia
St. Petersburg Vacation Travel Video Guide • Great Destinations
After the maritime victory over the Swedish army, Peter I the Great decided that he is going to build a city on the small islands and lagoons of the mouth of the river Neva. The Russian, Italian and French masters dreamed wonderful Baroque and Classicist palaces to the banks of the canals. The Church of the Savior on Blood, the Saint Isaac's Cathedral, the Peter and Paul Fortress, the blue white and gold Smolny and the Winter Palace all make the city of white nights unforgettable. The Hermitage has one of the largest art collections of the world, but for those who find this less than enough, there is the Russian Museum, and the suburbs of Peterhof, Pushkin and Pavlovsk.

Saint Petersburg Full City Guide - Russia Best Place - Travel & Discover
Swedish colonists built Nyenskans, a fortress at the mouth of the Neva River in 1611, in what was then called Ingermanland, which was inhabited by Finnic tribe of Ingrians. The small town of Nyen grew up around it.
At the end of the 17th century, Peter the Great, who was very interested in seafaring and maritime affairs, wanted Russia to gain a seaport in order to trade with the rest of Europe. He needed a better seaport than the country's main one at the time, Arkhangelsk, which was on the White Sea in the far north and closed to shipping during the winter.
