Remains Of The Old Parish Church Kinfauns Perthshire Scotland
Tour Scotland video of the remains of the old Parish Church on ancestry visit to Kinfauns, Perthshire. This site was immortalized by Sir Walter Scott in The Fair Maid of Perth. The French knight Sir Walter de Longueville, who fought with Robert the Bruce at the siege of Perth, was buried here, along with his huge sword, which was uncovered centuries later. On record as a chapel of the parish church of Scone in the 12th century, the church attained parochial status by 1419. It went out of use in 1868 when it was abandoned. It is now roofless and the walls very much in ruin, except for the south aisle, dated 1598, the burial place of the Grays of Kinfauns. The rest of the church is probably 15th century, although considerably altered after the Reformation.
Henry Mitchell Kelly (KIA: 03/04/1916)
Private Henry Mitchell Kelly was serving with the 1st/6th (Perthshire) Battalion of the Royal Highlanders (Black Watch) when he died on 3rd April 1916, shortly before the age of 24.
He worked for J. S. Anderson & Son (Drapers), Coleraine and enlisted; along with a number of young men from the town, in April 1915. A number of Coleraine boys served in the Black Watch.
Private Kelly, was stationed in Northern France; on the Loos front, and had only been there for about a month. While he was at his post waiting and watching, the enemy sprang a mine and the vibration brought down part of his trench, killing and injuring some of the men. Unfortunately he was in the place most affected and he was buried, his comrades went to his assistance at once, however he was found to be dead when dug out.
He had received favourable reports from the Home Battalion, and his company were impressed by his fine physique and ability.
He is buried in Maroeuil British Cemetery, France. And is commemorated on the war memorials in both Coleraine, Co. Londonderry and Dungannon, Co. Tyrone; close to his place of birth, as well as a memorial in his local family church.
His warfare is o’er, his battles fought, his victory won, though dearly bought; his fresh young life could not be saved; he now sleeps in France in a soldier’s grave.’
